    • Rebutting lies and misconceptions about Anarchists and the convention protests

Over the past two weeks in Denver and St. Paul, thousands of anarchists and other folks have come together to protest the conventions being held by the two wings of the Corporate Party. These protests were the culmination of almost two years of organizing. Organizers arranged not just protests, but many other events as well. Their efforts were met with severe and significant police repression, with over 800 people being violently arrested by the authorities and many others being violently attacked and terrorized. In response to these events, the police, the corporate media, and others have said many things about anarchists involved in these protests. While many of the comments on numerous Internet discussion boards have been supportive of anarchists and critical of the police, there have also been many lies and misconceptions said and written about anarchists. This FAQ is an effort to address and rebut those anti-anarchist words. • Whose Streets? Our streets! - Anarchist tackles cop, frees demonstrator at RNC

Based on the following Youtube comment for the first video, it appears that many are serious about what is happening:

"All those fucking hippies standing around chanting, and all it took was *one* brave anarchist to liberate the piggy's victim. Brick by brick, wall by wall. When we've laid the foundation for real struggle, I sure wouldn't want to be standing on the other side from us, because there's nothing fiercer than an anarchist fighting for liberty."

    • Police Trained to Hate Protesters

Did you know that anarchists killed several police officers during the 1999 anti-WTO protests in Seattle?

No, you don't know that, because it never happened. But this is the kind of thing that many rank-and-file police believe who have been trained to police summit protests, including the ongoing anti-RNC protests happening this week in St. Paul, Minnesota. There were riots and lots of police violence in Seattle in 1999, but nobody was killed during those protests. Yet, police officers doing anti-protest policing in many American cities have been told this lie about anarchists.

This is probably not the only lie about protesters and anarchists that are indoctrinated into the police. Those who attend protests and those who have been arrested can attest to hearing incredible anti-protester beliefs coming out of the mouths of the police. Numerous online message boards have seen comments about protesters that come from police officers.

    • WE TOLD YOU SO

At both the DNC and RNC, anarchists showed themselves to have seized the initiative to determine the character of street demonstrations. The US anarchist movement has survived several years of repression and attempted co-optation, proving that the upsurge associated with the anti-globalization era was not a flash in the pan: if anything, we are stronger today than ten years ago. • Police break down doors in night-time raid on anarchist meeting

“I heard somebody saying, ‘They’re coming, they’re coming!’ And feet pounding on the back stairs, pounding on the door saying they had a search warrant. They busted through the door. They’ve got their guns cocked at people.” Sammy Schutz held tightly to five-year-old Gabe, who had been watching a video with his mother and father and about 20 other people when the police stormed into 827 Smith Avenue in St. Paul, ordering everyone down on the floor.

“All I could feel was Mama Bear—do whatever you want to do to me, but I need to get my son out safe. He was watching his dad get handcuffed. And he’s saying, ‘Mommy, mommy, why did they crash through the door?’”

Gabe’s question remained unanswered. Ramsey County sheriff’s deputies said they were executing a search warrant, but would not show a copy of the warrant to lawyers or reporters. More than a dozen police vehicles , almost all unmarked, and more than 20 sheriff’s deputies and St. Paul police arrived at the building about 9:45 Friday night and were still there at 1 a.m., when I left.

After handcuffing the people in the building (occupants said there were about two dozen on the second floor and “about 40 or 50” on the first floor), police processed them one by one. Each person was asked for identification, name and address, and then photographed.

People who had been inside the building told similar stories of police entering with guns drawn. They said police rushed past the security desk on the first floor, and used a battering ram to crash through the second floor back door.

“They said if you don’t show us ID and get your picture taken, we will arrest you and take you away,” said Michelle Gross, president of Communities United Against Police Brutality, who had arrived five or ten minutes before the raid began, planning to attend a meeting. “They never said what the basis for arrests would be. We were waiting for a meeting, for God’s sake! I cannot tell you how much like a police state that felt to me.”

After each person was released after being photographed, exiting the building and crossing between police cars to a crowd of cheering friends on the sidewalk across from the building. No one was arrested, but sheriff’s deputies remained inside the building.

Eventually, a city contractor arrived to board up the building, allegedly for unspecified code violations.

St. Paul City Council member Dave Thune said he was trying to find out who ordered the building locked up and on what grounds. “This isn’t the way we do things in St. Paul,” Thune said. “I don’t want the city to get sucked into something that the sheriff’s office is concocting.”
Thune said that someone had called in the city contractor and ordered him to secure the building, but this was not done according ot St. Paul city procedures.

“Normally,” said Thune, “we only board up buildings that are vacant and ramshackle. The fire inspector has no idea what’s going on. He hadn’t been called. The person who is on 24/7 call was not called. I talked to him trying to find out who did issue that order and why.”

The building at 827 Smith Avenue had been rented by the RNC Welcoming Committee as a “convergence space,” open to activists for meetings, eating, and just hanging out. Earlier in the week, a large downstairs room in the former theater held tables of literature and about a dozen computers, set up for free wi-fi access for visitors. Large maps showed downtown St. Paul streets. The kitchen was spotless, with stainless steel refrigerators and a gas range, looking like a commercial kitchen in a church basement. The second floor room, where Sammy and her family were watching a video on consumerism Friday night, had comfortable theater seats and space for meetings.*CONTINUES*

    • Hard-wired for the ups and downs

Just curious about what you all think of elitism, reverse dominance hierarchy, and the governance of anarchy. Take your time... no deadline for a doctoral theses here.

      Mind-mashing article by Dennis Dutton:

"Hierarchies, writes Denis Dutton, are intrinsic to human society, and resentment of elites can be traced back to prehistory | March 12, 2008

I'M here not to praise elitism but to understand it, not so much through a history of elites but by talking about elites in prehistory.

Human beings are naturally hierarchical and they like arranging themselves into hierarchies of skill, age, wealth, competence, experience, whatever. We can deny it if we want, but we all know that when the chips are down and the anarchists have formed the anarchists' association, the first thing they do is elect a governing committee.

The Pleistocene is the period from 1.6million years ago to 10,000 years ago, when cities began to be built and agriculture and writing were invented. Following it is the modern period, the Holocene. But it's in that earlier, much longer period, the Pleistocene, when the human personality and human sociality were formed; and that's what is so important for evolutionary psychology.

Based on what we know about hunter-gatherer societies from the Pleistocene to the present, we can say a little bit about how hierarchies form in human groups. It's worth considering our Pleistocene inheritance in this context because although hierarchies are conditioned for every society by local cultural conditions, the will to form hierarchies in human associations is as hard-wired as blood clotting or the liking for sweet and fat.

Some general sense of fairness is intrinsic to hunter-gatherer hierarchies. Pure self-interest or the interest of your family is not all that counts. There is also fairness in, say, food distribution: the obligation of individuals to divide, rather than keep for themselves or their family, the kill from some successful hunting expedition. As far as status and opportunity are concerned, I think we'd learn a lot by looking at how hierarchies tend to be found in typical Pleistocene hunting bands.

These bands seem to be adjusted to create maximal success in terms of mobility, flexibility, skill specialisation and stealth. They required co-operation. They were male units. Bands of brothers is perhaps going too far, but the standard hunter-gatherer societies were anywhere from 25 to 150 people in size and certainly included a lot of cousins and brothers. It's interesting to note that the size of the hunter-gatherer hunting band drawn from these societies was about 10 to 12 men, which happens to be the size of the basic platoon in the British army, the squad in the US army and the basic unit in almost every army since the Romans.

It is also close to the default size -- nine to 12 or so -- of teams in many sports and boards of directors of corporations.

This is a contingent fact about human nature. We could have evolved so that the most comfortable operating group was 50 people, or 100, or three. Then we'd have a different memory as a species for names and faces, and we'd have a different way of forming associations in societies. But as things evolved for Homo sapiens, we came to this number of 12 as a default size of these types of co-operative groups worldwide.

These bands, as well as the larger hunter-gatherer groups that they fed and protected, were involved not only in hunting but in running raiding parties and defences against other human raiding parties."

    • Why Do people love a mass murder like Che?

Hollywood celebrities, starving pseudo-artists and confused hipster teens wearing around local coffee shops. To all those who decide that you want to be coffee house communist-chic, remember this: When you are wearing a Che T-shirt, you're wearing the same shirt that makes terrorists believe you're just one of the gang. I hope that latte is tasty.

How Che became such a revered superhero of the hard-core left is laughable. First of all, he wasn't even a good revolutionary. He failed in his attempt at world revolution almost as badly as communism has failed in the places it was actually tried.

"This is a history of a failure" is how he himself described his efforts in the Congo. He was killed in Bolivia, trying to fire up another failure of a war. Earlier, he even managed to drop his gun and shoot himself in the face.

But more important than his incompetence is the fact that the man was a mass killer. Hundreds were reportedly executed on his watch, and that doesn't include the deaths incurred in the wars he was constantly trying to start. He described his maniacal lust for war in his writings, saying he savored "the acrid smell of gunpowder and blood of the enemy's death." How this guy is a hero to the anti-war crowd is truly perplexing.

I should also point out what seemingly gets eliminated from the Hollywood movies attempting to glorify him: his bouts with racism. When describing the differences in the strife between "Europeans" and "the black," the supposedly progressive-minded Che wrote, "their different attitudes of life separate them completely: the black is indolent and fanciful, he spends his money on frivolity and drink; the European comes from a tradition of working and saving which follows him to this corner of America and drives him to get ahead."

Ohhhhh, so the "European" is a hard worker while "the black" is a fanciful drunk. Now I understand the difference.

I wonder if that quote would inspire the volunteer office of Barack Obama's Houston supporters to remove their Che flag. After it was spotted on the wall in a local news video, Obama's campaign, far from a haven for right-wing nut jobs, went out of its way to make sure everyone knew that it had nothing to do with the flag and didn't approve of its use. If Che were such a hero, why would that be necessary?

Revisionist history's fusion with fashion sense isn't exactly new, but its popularity seems to be growing. When actress Cameron Diaz showed up in Peru, she thought she had a trendy bag that might garner some jealous stares. People were staring, sure, but for all the wrong reasons.

    • Turkey wants in on NWO

For controversial Turkish President Abdullah Gül, the recent war in Georgia signals a "new world order" that will emerge from the rubble of South Ossetia and force the United States to share its power, The Guardian reported.

Gül said America's inability to prevent Russia's invasion shows that the US can no longer shape world politics as it once did.

"I don't think you can control all the world from one centre," Gül said. "There are big nations. There are huge populations. There is unbelievable economic development in some parts of the world. So what we have to do is, instead of unilateral actions, act all together, make common decisions and have consultations with the world. A new world order, if I can say it, should emerge."

The geopolitical turmoil in the Caucusus -- a region between Europe and Asia that includes the nations of Georgia and Turkey -- has placed Turkey in a difficult position between pleasing its neighbor Russia and not hurting its relationship with the US.

The conflict in Georgia proved Turkey's tenuous position regarding energy when Russian tanks cut the flow of oil to Turkey from a pipeline running through Georgia, Reuters reported.

Turkey's energy problems have forced it to seek gas from Russia and Iran, prompting an outcry from Washington.

Gül spoke to The Guardian shortly before a meeting with Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The US warned Turkey on Thursday against striking an energy deal with Iran after learning of the two presidents' meeting, Financial Times reported.

US officials claim the deal will undermine international efforts to curb Iran's nuclear program.

"Such a deal by Turkey with Iran would send the wrong message at a time when the Iranian regime has repeatedly failed to comply with its UN Security Council and IAEA obligations," the US state department said.

Gül said he doesn't want Iran to have nuclear weapons, but he "doesn't want to think about" the United States attack on Iran.

"I don't want to think about that. Everybody should take a lesson from what happened in Iraq," he said. "Diplomatic solutions are always better than hard solutions."

    • OH GREAT U.S. Navy ships head to Georgia

Two U.S. Navy ships, including a guided missile destroyer USS McFaul, and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter are getting underway to transport humanitarian assistance supplies to Georgia, U.S. European Command (EUCOM) said on August 21.

It said USS McFaul (DDG 74) departed from Souda Bay, Crete, on Wednesday and the cutter Dallas (WHEC 716) will depart later this week.

McFaul and Dallas are scheduled to transit into the Black Sea and arrive in Georgia within a week, according to the U.S. European Command.

The announcement comes after it was reported that Turkey gave its go-ahead to sail through its straits into the Black Sea.“The ships will transport thousands of blankets, hygiene items, baby food and infant supplies to save lives and alleviate human suffering,” U.S. European Command said.

The Associated Press reported quoting unnamed U.S. official in Turkey that USS Mount Whitney would be among those three vessels expected to arrive in Georgia.

Anatoly Nogovitsin, deputy chief of the general staff of the Russian armed forces, said at a news conference in Moscow on August 21, that the Russia’s Black Sea fleet continued “providing security regime for maritime in the eastern part of the Black Sea.”

“There is no need to further reinforce it [the fleet],” he added.

Meanwhile, a team of U.S. European Command, led by Army Brig. Gen. John Miller, is already in Tbilisi “to assess the current humanitarian situation and make recommendations on continued humanitarian support to senior military leadership.”

“The EUCOM team will conduct a deliberate and focused assessment, encompassing variables such as transportation, infrastructure, manpower and many other life support considerations,” the U.S. European Command said.

And on August 21, the head of the U.S. European Command, Gen. John Craddock, who is also NATO’s supreme allied commander for Europe, also arrived in Tbilisi.

    • All starts with an Idea, then all acording to plan

Watching The Dark Knight was mind blowing, the dark realism mixed with the correct mythology of Batman of this film was like I wasn't watching a Superhero movie but was watching a classic play like tragedy of Titus.
But the one quote they really got me was the speech to Harvey Dent aka Two-face, now if you havn't seen it dont read. because I do post spoilers
BUT Harvey is in Gotham General and Joker just escaped the Major crime unit center, dressed as a female nurse with red-hair wig he sneaks into the room.
sits quietly and say "Hiiii" looking in disgust at Hervey's burnt face.
tells him it wasn't anything personal and Dent says it was all part of his plan to which the Joker gives a speech going
"Do I really look like a man with a plan, Harvey? I don't have a plan. The mob has plans, the cops have plans. You know what I am, Harvey? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught one.I just DO things. I'm a wrench in the gears. I HATE plans. Yours, theirs, everyone's. Maroni has plans. Gordon has plans. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I am not a schemer. I show schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So when I say that what happened to you and your girlfriend wasn't personal, you know I'M telling the truth."
      JOKER GIVES DENT GUN.
"It's a schemer who put you where you are. You were a schemer. You had plans. Look where it got you. I just did what I do best-I took your plan and turned it on itself. Look what I have done to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple bullets. Nobody panics when the expected people get killed. Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plans are horrifying. If I tell the press that tomorrow a gangbanger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will get blown up, nobody panics. But when I say one little old mayor will die, everyone loses their minds!!! Introduce a little anarchy, you upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I AM AN AGENT OF CHAOS. And you know the thing about chaos, Harvey. It's fair"
That speech was so fucking great showing fact in Human nature
we LOVE order, we LOVE to know what ahead of us
It's normal, but the problem with that is, we're so safe and so calm with our plans that if one thing comes to MAYBE even getting in the way we lose it.
      Case example.
2.15.1898 tensions with Spain over the revolution in Cuba and Spain refusing to peacefully end it, and of Course we as Human HAD A PLAN. USS Main was sent to help. Ok everything is flowing good till a rock hits the stream of calm and the uss main blows up, now the explosion was simply a coal bunker fire, but one little word by one man named William Randolph Hearst on a paper comes out
WAR SPAIN ATTACKS AMERICA and bam a war between nations is born.
Now lets get Modern now, we have order, we live in a threat of an attack BUT GOD DAMN IT, we have a plan and we like to see ahead of it.
Whats that? Oil Prices will go up because insurgents are growing? OH MY GOD! i better get gas and stock up before it gets bad.
So He runs and opens his mouth, the neghbor hears, his wife hears, she calls her friend she tells her girlfriend, and she calls her son
soon we have hundres of people running to fill up on gas out of fear we will lose it and what happends the prices go up and now we're fucked.
but we like to blame everyone else, I mean it CAN'T possibly be our fault that prices gone up...RIGHT?

    • Thoughtful Anarchy

Anarchy is a tricky proposition. The little teenage slammers in Che Guevara t–shirts who used to scrawl red A’s and circles on their binders in school have led to a misrepresentation of what anarchy is supposed to be about. It is a much more peaceful ideology than those sinister symbols denote. And as people become more fed up with government, it seems to apply itself to a new cause everyday.

So with all the hubbub over going green nowadays, it was only a matter of time before the anarchists had their say. Enter Radical Sustainability, a lecture by anarchist writer and bona fide sustainability expert Scott Kellogg. Kellogg is the co–author of Toolbox for Sustainable City Living: A Do–It–Ourselves Guide . Hosted Aug. 14 at Wooden Shoe Books, the anarchist bookstore at 508 S. Fifth St., Radical Sustainability gives voice to a new breed of anarchist: less ideological, more practical, and scared shitless.

”We have to stop thinking of the rugged individual survivalist as some guy in his bunker trying to weather the storm,” Kellogg says. ”That’s a dead end.”

Times have changed. A war in Iraq, a violent occupation, an energy crisis and sweeping corruption have left a distinctly emboldened anarchist subculture so frightened by the inefficiency of government that they have contemplated moving their whole operation underground.

But love of the city and lack of funding leave many would–be autonomous individuals scratching their heads. How do you free yourself from the chains of oil dependence, government oversight, agribusiness and other institutions that may one day experience drastic fallout? According to Kellogg, ”the belt is beginning to tighten.”

Kellogg created the Rhizome Collective, a sustainability laboratory and training center on the east side of Austin, Texas. Rhizome aims to teach well–intentioned city dwellers to create their own energy, their own food and even their own waste management systems. Basically, a secluded backwoods survival system for a concrete backyard world.

Kellogg talks about harnessing the power of the sun for everything from water purification to heating to cooking. He gives tips on how to create a solar–powered oven using magnification lenses and heat–absorbing materials. He shows you how to make an angled shelf that will hold bottles of rainwater up to direct sunlight, using the ultraviolet rays to purify the water. These methods came in handy when Rhizome traveled to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and aided disaster relief efforts through numerous sustainable projects. Clean drinking water became a luxury once thefloodwaters polluted natural water centers. Rhizome used their purification method to bring clean water to displaced residents.

Another practice that Kellogg and his crew have tried to bring to the masses is bioremediation, the process of adding bacteria and plant enzymes to toxic soil to create fertile beds for plant production. After Katrina, toxins and dangerous pollutants had leaked into the groundwater, preventing new food production. But by adding elements to the soil that may increase the production of naturally–occurring, toxin–killing bacteria, you can speed up the soil–rejuvenation process.

    • RNC Welcoming Committee orders tasers for every protestor

he RNC Welcoming Committee (RNC-WC), an anarchist and anti-authoritarian organizing body based in the Twin Cities, announced today that it has ordered tasers for each of its members and friends. The announcement comes on the heels of last month’s St. Paul City Council approval of a St. Paul Police Department (SPPD) request for 234 tasers. Due to a unique corporate-anarchist confidentiality agreement, the exact number of tasers or documentable evidence of this new order will not be disclosed.

Both the SPPD and RNC-WC taser orders are scheduled to arrive before the September 1 so-called Republican National Convention (RNC) in St. Paul. However, “The RNC Welcoming Committee’s order of tasers has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming Republican convention,” said Ann O’ Nymmity of the RNC-WC. “These deadly, yet humane, weapons are needed simply to protect the safety of members of our community on a day-to-day basis. The timing is purely a coincidence.”

Last month, St. Paul police spokesperson Tom Walsh made similar statements to the Associated Press, saying that in regards to the RNC, his department’s purchase is “in no way related [to the timing of the RNC in St. Paul]. It simply isn’t.”

    • Is our generation finally rising to the political challenge?

A group of self-described anarchists threatening to disrupt the Democratic National Convention is promising to go away if the $50 million federal grant that Denver received to pay for convention security is invested in the community instead.

"As anarchists, we feel the greatest problem with government is how its primary interest is to protect the profits of those in power, even when it comes at the expense of the general public," Clayton Dewey, an organizer with Unconventional Denver, said in a statement.

"Spending $50 million on weaponry to attack people voicing their opinion and flooding the streets with riot police while schools close down, children go without health care and people lose their homes is exactly the problem with the corrupt two-party system we're opposing this August," he said.

Lindy Eichenbaum Lent, a senior adviser to Mayor John Hickenlooper, said the grant is needed to protect the public, including protesters.

"Congress appropriated these security-designated funds to both convention host cities because, in a post- 9/11 world, planning for major national events like this requires heightened security preparations," she said. "It is in the interest of local residents, businesses and visitors, including those participating in demonstrations, to have a safe and secure event."

Denver officials said last week they expect to spend more than $18 million on police equipment for the DNC, but the purchases won't include high-tech weapons that use sonic waves to incapacitate protesters or "goo" guns to immobilize them.

Unconventional Denver is the local organizing body of a national network of anarchists mobilizing against the DNC, said Tim Simons, another organizer.

Simons said the group's offer to sit out the convention if the city, the federal government and the DNC all agree to "redirect" the $50 million to things such as health care, education and housing is not a publicity stunt.

"We understand that it's far-fetched, but it's a sincere offer," he said.

The offer was made to coincide with a bill that went before the City Council Monday banning people from carrying certain items that could be used to block access to areas or interfere with police during the convention. The council will hold a public hearing on the bill Aug. 4.

    • Anarchists planning to 'crash' RNC convention

The anarchist group RNC Welcoming Committee is planning to stir up the Republican National Conference.

"Fox News was spreading this local coverage nationwide, telling their audience that anarchists "have plans to crash the Republican Convention" and featuring an interview on local community radio with three members of the RNC Welcoming Committee over the banner "anarchists plan to cut off the arena from entering delegates."

"We're not trying to influence the Republicans," stated one anarchist in the radio interview. "They already know that people are against the war. People are against pollution and global warming and racism. The Republicans don't seem to care."

"We don't think the political elite will stop because we ask nicely," explained another. "And so we advocate a strategy of direct action -- in this case, not letting them hold the convention."
