Mix Magazine Profiles SugarHill Sessions on Pacifica
With SugarHill sessions voted best radio show by Houston Press..I thought I would share this profile on SugarHill Studio's impressive history.
Last year, SugarHill partnered with the Pacifica Radio Network and launched The SugarHill Sessions radio show, offering a place for local music to shine. Current owner/studio manager Workman said, “With the advent of modern low-cost recording equipment, our new focus is to be the region's production company — the place you go to connect with the people who know how to make your music sound the very best it can. The music can only get better as we are liberated from being ‘the keepers of the holy machines.’ Now, we can concentrate on every aspect of our clients' musical performances.”

Album Review, "Culturcide, Gigs for an Imaginary Audience"
Back in the early and middle '80s, Culturcide bypassed then-prevalent synth-pop in favor of a form of electronic punk rock that evolved into industrial. This odds-and-sods collection offers 12 demos, live jams and unreleased tracks for the coroner's inquest. It's certainly a horrible place for dilettantes to start, as the raw quality of the recordings — a third of the tracks are rehearsal takes — presents you with something like Culturcide at 151 proof, a glimpse into the hostile recesses of the band's creative process. Cultucide song is part of an illegal art exhibit
Interesting article about Culturcide and, more importantly, a discussion board that clears up some of the urban music myths about this wonderfully experimental cult punk band....jump in and set the record straight, no pun intended. Or don't.
When the rest of the world danced into happy post punk disco, chemically induced and carefree. Culturcide assaulted tradition, tried new things, wore unusual trousers and proved that an experimental punk band from Houston was not to be taken lightly.
I had coffee with one of the lads this morning, and at no point did he attempt to bite me. They are generallly agreeable fellows and many own their own homes. Culturcide on Wikipedia
Culturcide was a Houston-based experimental punk band, active from 1980 to 1990 and from 1993 to the present day. They were notorious for their 1986 album Tacky Souvenirs of Pre-Revolutionary America, which earned the band a cult following, but also several legal threats. Sugarhill Recording Studios
For over 67 years artists have been recording music at this recording-industry icon. The Big Bopper recorded "Chantilly Lace" here, Freddy Fender recorded "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" here. Today, artists like Solange Knowles, Southern Backtones, John Evans Band, Kelly Rowlands, Winter Wallace..... just to name a few still make Sugar Hill a home base for recording.

Prince - Live in London
Great extended concert footage from one of the "21 Nights In London" (I think from the August 3rd show). This is directly from his www.3121.com website which means its probably from his own professionally shot footage since he records every single show. In this clip, he blows out:

Michelle Nichols says "Hip Hop" will soon die, just like Disco
In this article, Michelle Nichols refers to hip hop as a ?flagging musical genre that may go the way of disco.? Because of course, 50 cent was the pioneer of hip hop way back in 2002, and now here we are in 2007, with the genre having its last big wave on this year?s MTV VMAs. AT&T Censors Musician's Political Message
Pearl Jam recently brought to light potential censorship by AT&T Blue Room of their latest performance at Lollapalooza. The portions "missing" from their webcast were reported as the result of mistakes in cutting by their content monitor, thought the specific messages contained in the missing portions is quite worrisome.
According to Eddie V., during the performance of "Daughter" the following lyrics were cut from the webcast:
- "George Bush, leave this world alone." (the second time it was sung); and
- "George Bush find yourself another home."
Eddie has posted a plea on his website for alerts on other such instances of "missing" / censored performances. Whether this was a bizarre coincidence, or truly intended censorship, either way it raises an important issue - that the days of the FBI chasing Arlo Guthrie, and of music being our most ardent weapon against government action and media censorship of Vietnam war images may not be far behind us.
