Guns N' Roses to release new album next month, Which Means: FREE DR.PEPPER!
NEW YORK (Billboard) - More than a decade after its conception, Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" will finally see the light of day before year's end, sources close to the situation told Billboard.
The set will be a Best Buy exclusive and will be available Sunday, November 23, rather than the usual Tuesday.
In the run-up to release date, album track "Shackler's Revenge" will debut in the video game "Rock Band 2," while a portion of "If the World" is playing over the end credits in the new Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe film "Body of Lies."
In addition, GNR's seminal 1987 full-length debut, "Appetite for Destruction," will be reissued on vinyl on October 28 via Interscope.
The band's last new studio albums were the simultaneously released "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" in September 1991. A covers set, "The Spaghetti Incident?," followed in 1993, and featured some of the last GNR recordings from original guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan.
This spring, soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper offered to send a free can of the beverage to "everyone in America" (excluding ex-GNR members Slash and Buckethead) if "Chinese Democracy" were to arrive anytime during the calendar year 2008. YouTube Introduces Music Downloads
Video sharing website YouTube bosses have introduced a new feature that allows users to download music via the site.
Through the new program users are able to click on an icon to buy the music track that is playing in the video being viewed from iTunes and Amazon.com.
For now the icons will feature only on videos by bands signed to the EMI or Universal labels, but it is planned that extras such as a feature to buy gig tickets will be added at a later date.
"If you like the song, you don't need to leave Google or leave the site to buy it," Bakari Brock, business affairs counsel at YouTube told the New York Times. Video sharing website YouTube bosses have introduced a new feature that allows users to download music via the site. ... more -
WGA to writers: Avoid Ozzy's new show
WGA leaders warned members Wednesday that working on the Osbourne clan's new comedy-variety show on Fox could put their membership with the guild on shaky ground.
At issue with the WGA is the show's producers, FremantleMedia North America, who according to the union offered a "sub-standard contract" asking that writers be treated as if they were working on "half-scripted" shows, which would greatly reduce their writing fees.
The writing on the show, which has a working title "The Osbournes: Loud and Dangerous," would traditionally be covered under the guild's basic agreement, used in the past for such shows as "The Carol Burnett Show" and "Laugh-In," according to WGA West president Patric Verrone and WGA East president Michael Winship. But Fremantle, according to the WGA, wanted to treat other portions of the show as "reality content," which would not be covered. Fremantle indicated it would be responsible for writing that part of the show. The WGA refused.
This isn't the first Fremantle show the WGA has had issues with.
While some shows produced by Fremantle have been covered by the guild contract, there are many others, including "American Idol" and "The Price Is Right," that are not covered by the WGA contract. Over the summer, the WGA went on a bus tour, dubbed the American Idol Truth Tour, which followed the show's auditions all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico, talking with the public about what they claim are substandard working conditions for writers and other behind-the-scenes employees.
"Now it is clear that Fremantle's intention is to bring their low-cost, nonunion business model into traditional genres -- first games shows, then comedy-variety," the letter states. "Soon, no WGA-covered writing will be safe from their aggressive undermining of our contract. We cannot allow this encroachment to continue."
Fremantle's David Shall, general counsel and executive vp of business operations, accused the WGA of continuing a campaign of "defamation and negative propaganda" against the company. The WGA, Shall said, was contacted in good faith by Fremantle with the hopes of hiring WGA writers for the "nontraditional" Osbourne show, which mixes variety with reality TV.
"Unfortunately, after only a few phone conversations with our representatives, the guild chose to end discussion, ordered its membership to not write for the show and implemented their usual mendacious strategy of feeding misleading and erroneous information to the press," Shall wrote. "We are disappointed that our effort to meet the guild halfway has been summarily rejected and, as such, we don't believe the guild's membership has been served."

Tom Morello: Solo Album Released
Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine released his anticipated solo album, The Fabled City, on September 30th. The 11-song album, produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam), is the first release to bear the political and social activist's birth name and features appearances by System Of A Down's Serj Tankian and Shooter Jennings. With more complex electric arrangements than displayed on the sparse solo debut One Man Revolution, The Fabled City is the synthesis of his groundbreaking work as an innovative rock guitarist and revolutionary acoustic troubadour. For the first time, this album bridges the gap between Tom Morello, the acoustic protest singer and Tom Morello, the guitar legend.
The tour in support of The Fabled City will display both sides of Morello's guitar prowess with both an acoustic set and full-band electric set performed each night. In regards to the format of the performances, Morello stated "On The Fabled City Tour, I will be playing both acoustic and electric guitar. I want to start off with the darker acoustic songs and then build to some of the wildest electric guitar playing I have ever unleashed on stage in my career. The idea is half Dylan/Half Hendrix. I have been practicing my ass off and can't wait to rock."
In addition to the tour, Tom Morello has been confirmed to appear at the annual New Yorker Festival in New York City on Saturday, October 4th. Morello will be performing songs and talking with James Surowiecki, staff writer at The New Yorker since 2000. The performance and interview takes place at the Acura Stage at Cedar Lake Theatre, 547 West 26th Street.

Apple To Shut Down iTunes?
Apple could shut down its iTunes music store this week, if a verdict from the US Copyright Royalty Board forces the company to pay higher royalty rates.
A ruling is expected by the board tomorrow (October 2) on an application by the National Music Publishers' Association to raise the royalty fees paid to its members on songs purchased from online music stores including iTunes.
The association wants to increase rates by 66 per cent, from nine cents to 15 cents per track, whereas Apple wants a decrease to 4.8 cents per track, reports CNN.
In a statement submitted to the board last year, iTunes vice president Eddy Cue said that Apple would not stand for an increase:
"If the [iTunes store] was forced to absorb any increase in the... royalty rate, the result would be to significantly increase the likelihood of the store operating at a financial loss - which is no alternative at all," the statement read.
Cue added that Apple would have no qualms about shutting iTunes down if it was not making enough money.
"Apple has repeatedly made it clear that it is in this business to make money," he said, "and most likely would not continue to operate [the iTunes store] if it were no longer possible to do so profitably."

Blogger Arrested Over GN'R Leaks
Federal authorities say they have arrested a blogger suspected of streaming songs from Guns N' Roses unreleased album, "Chinese Democracy," on his Web site.
FBI agents arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill this morning (Aug. 27) on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws. Federal authorities say Cogill posted nine unreleased Guns N' Roses songs on Antiquiet.com in June. The songs were later removed but spread quickly across the Internet.
According to an arrest affidavit, Cogill admitted to agents that he posted the songs on his Web site.
"Chinese Democracy" has been in the works for more than a decade, with frontman Axl Rose the only remaining original member of the once mighty group. Rumblings that the album may finally be out this fall, possibly as a Best Buy exclusive, have not been confirmed by Guns N' Roses or its management.
