Should the legal drinking age be lowered to 18?
IOWA CITY - Nearly 100 college presidents are supporting the new Amethyst initiative. The University of Iowa's president is not one of them.
On Tuesday evening, President Sally Mason released a copy of the letter she sent to the head of the Amethyst Initiative (Read letter.) In it she says does not believe lowering the legal drinking age to 18 would be effective at this time.
She also claims that there are already too many underage college students who are drinking illegally, and that drunk students have been involved with assaults or unwanted sexual advances with their peers.
Many University of Iowa students like to drink. In fact, the school recently took 12th place on the Princeton Review for the top party schools. Since 1984, the legal age to buy and drink alcohol has been 21. But what if the age limit were lowered to 18?
"I kind of feel like it's like that already. People are underage drinking all the time. People may go a little crazy. I don't know if it would be the best idea as people might go nuts," said Caitie Polz, UI student.
"I think people do it more because they like to rebel so they like to do things. I think it's a very good idea," said Karson Rump, UI student.
The new Amethyst initiative supported by 100 college presidents calls on lawmakers to debate the effectiveness of the 24-year old law which could mean lowering the legal age limit to 18, the same age when people can vote or join the military.
"If you go downtown on any Thursday, Friday or Saturday night now you'll see there are a lot of persons 18 or 19 who are now illegally drinking," said Sgt. Troy Kelsay, Iowa City Police Department.
Charged with overseeing nearly 400 high school students at City High, Principal Mark Hanson thinks lowering the age limit is a bad idea that may mean even younger students will start drinking.
"Basically they've just been driving for a couple of years. If they are able to get the alcohol legally and start experimenting with that and then get behind the car, that's a whole other issue," said Mark Hanson, City High Principal.
And that issue of drunk driving has organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving outraged that college presidents would even consider the idea.
Among all statewide colleges, only the President of Coe College has currently given his support to the group, saying he believes further research by the group might help identify solutions. Happy hour drinking ban considered for UK
Happy hours in pubs and clubs could be banned in an attempt to promote responsible drinking, a government spokesperson has said.
The government is expected to publish the results of an independent review into the link between price promotion and alcohol abuse in the next few weeks. It will then begin consultation about new legislation to regulate the industry, which could include banning happy hours.
A Department of Health spokesperson said: "The Government has made it clear that alcohol must be sold and marketed responsibly and that new legislation will be introduced if existing voluntary standards are not being met."
Drinks promotions and happy hours are currently regulated by individual pub companies.
A report by Alcohol Concern, published this week, showed current industry self-regulation was ineffective, and cut-price drinks deals were commonplace.
Don Shenker, chief executive of Alcohol Concern, said: "The drinks industry's claim to champion responsible retailing is badly let down by the significant number of premises who persistently sell alcohol at cut prices.
"Self-regulation has clearly failed and we desperately need mandatory codes and an industry watchdog to stamp out the poor practice and complacency that is characteristic of many of these venues."
Prof Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians and chairman of the Alcohol Heath Alliance, added: "Too many bars and clubs continue to put profit before their customers' health. This report shows the time has come for the government to step in to regulate an industry whose own efforts to tackle irresponsible alcohol sales have failed."
The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA), welcomed the government review, but warned new legislation should cover all alcohol retailers.
Mark Hastings, BBPA director of communications, said: "No-one in the industry would have any problem with the government seeking to regulate irresponsible drinks promotions but we would expect such regulations to be directed not only towards pubs, but supermarkets and corner shops too. It should not be one rule for pubs and one rule for everyone else." Happy hours in pubs and clubs could be banned in an attempt to promote responsible drinking, a government spokesperson has said. ... more -

Obama makes last minute stop at local bar
RALEIGH - Sen. Barack Obama made a last-minute, surprise appearance at a downtown bar this afternoon, ordering a Pabst Blue Ribbon (beer of the working man) and spending half an hour greeting voters.
“Everyone voted?” he hollered, walking up Martin Street as he headed into the Raleigh Times bar about 5:30 p.m.
He went inside, ordered a draft and tipped bartender Jay Winfrey $18.
“I think he forgot his change,” Winfrey joked.
Obama hoisted his beer, took a sip and asked again if everyone had voted. “You’ve only got two hours!” he said.
Outside, Obama spent 15 minutes moving down the sidewalk and greeting more voters, signing autographs and getting his picture taken as police officers, sheriff’s deputies and Secret Service agents kept onlookers at bay and a helicopter hovered overhead.
Michelle Obama followed, greeting more voters.
About 6:15 p.m., Obama waved to the crowd and left. RALEIGH - Sen. Barack Obama made a last-minute, surprise appearance at a downtown bar this afternoon, ordering a Pabst Blue Ribbon (be... more -
$500,000 worth of alcohol stolen
Clayton police are looking for a half-million dollars worth of stolen booze.
Whether the thieves intentionally stole it, however, remains a mystery for now.
A tractor-trailer rig was reported stolen from a lot behind Bojangle’s Restaurant off Shotwell Road last week, according to Clayton police. The truck’s cargo: assorted hard liquor valued at $500,000.
Police said the driver of the truck, a local man whom Allen declined to identify, parked the truck behind Bojangle’s on Thursday night. When he returned Friday, it was gone.
The truck was destined for Raleigh.
“Someone joked, just go to the biggest post-election party tonight and you will find where it was directed to,” Allen said. Clayton police are looking for a half-million dollars worth of stolen booze. ... more -
Liquor ad features Lindsay Lohan's mugshot
Lindsay Lohan is not exactly toasting her latest public appearance.
A mugshot of the 21-year-old actress, who has been in and out of rehab after two arrests last year on drunken driving and cocaine charges, was prominently featured Friday in an advertisement attacking legislation for devices that measure a driver's blood alcohol level before their vehicle can start.
The full-page black-and-white ad appeared in USA Today on Friday and was paid for by the American Beverage Institute, a trade group that supports the interests of the alcohol industry. The ad reads "Ignition interlocks are a good idea for" above Lohan's mug shot from her July 24, 2007 arrest and "But a bad idea for us" above smaller photos of people drinking.
