Half a million plastic coffins?
Well, apparently the Government is expecting a half million people to die relatively soon, and the Atlanta Airport is a major airline traffic hub, probably the biggest in the country, which means Georgia is a prime base to conduct military operations and coordination. Woman faces eviction for having sex as teenager
Wendy Whitaker may not be allowed to live in the 100-year-old bungalow she owns with her husband. The 28-year-old was forced out of the house in 2006 and cannot volunteer at her local church. She says she was arrested for returning home to do her laundry.
Whitaker is a sex offender: When she was a 17-year-old high school sophomore, she had oral sex with a 15-year-old boy. Whitaker pleaded guilty in 1997 to sodomy and served five years of probation. But she and her husband have been forced to move several times in the last two years because Georgia's sex offender registry laws prevent offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school, church, playground, school bus stop or other place where children congregate.
"I know what I did was wrong, but do I really deserve to keep going through this over and over?" said Whitaker, who is the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the registration laws. "Does my husband deserve it? I'm being punished over and over again."
Though Georgia's supreme court in November struck down as unconstitutional an earlier version of the law, the state legislature quickly passed a new version that keeps intact most of the law's strictest provisions. The new law, still considered one of the nation's toughest sex offender laws, went into effect this month. It is one of a rash of laws enacted by state legislatures in the last several years that restrict where sex offenders can live, and in some cases, bars them from living within 2,500 feet of schools.

Cynthia McKinney wins Green Party nomination
Former Georgia congresswoman Cynthia McKinney reassumed the national political stage Saturday, winning the presidential nomination of the Green Party of the United States at the party's national convention here.
Amid chants of "Paint The White House Green" and signs proclaiming, "Truth. McKinney 2008," McKinney revved up a crowd of about 350 Green Party delegates from 38 states who elected her on the first ballot.
"I am asking you to vote your conscience, vote your dreams, vote your future, vote Green," McKinney told the convention in a 30 minute speech following an address by her running mate, hip hop artist and political activist Rosa Clemente.
She was joined by her father, former Georgia representative Billy McKinney; her mother Leola, and her son Coy, on the stage in the elegant Michigan Avenue hall where the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs,
McKinney, 53, was the odds-on favorite to win the nomination, coming into the convention with a 10-1 delegate lead over her closest rival, Jesse Johnson of West Virginia.
Since last fall, McKinney has campaigned in 30 states on the slogan "Power To The People" and a platform that calls for single-payer universal health care, the immediate withdrawal of American forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, the creation of a Department of Peace, and reparations for African-Americans.
In her address, Clemente, 36, vowed that she and McKinney would fight all "-isms and ideologies that divide us." Clemente jokingly threw down a challenge to the nation's sitting vice president: "Dick Cheney, bring it on."
In her unlikely re-emergence on the national political stage as the presidential nominee of the Green Party, which she joined in 2007 after leaving the Democratic Party where she had served six terms representing DeKalb County's 4th Congressional district, McKinney faces a stiff – extremely long-shot – run at the presidency.
She as much conceded winning the presidency was not her goal in her speech Saturday. She said the thrust of her campaign would be to get 5 percent of the vote in November, effectively establishing the Greens as a third party that would not have to fight state-by-state to get on the ballot every four years.
"We are in this to build a movement," said McKinney to roars from the crowd. "A vote for the Green Party is a vote for the movement that will turn this country right-side-up again."
In Georgia, because the party failed to qualify under state laws, McKinney and Clemente will not be on the ballot in November. Green Party leaders expect she will be on the ballot in 36 states, where ballot qualification rules vary.
David Cobb, who ran for president on the Green Party ticket in 2004 – and pulled in just 0.1 percent of the vote – said Saturday that one of the appeals of McKinney' as a candidate is her name recognition.
"Before she has even won the nomination, she has pulled new members into the party," said Cobb, who introduced McKinney at the convention, praising her work in Congress and for having introduced articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, and Secretary of State Condolezza Rice. He estimated Green Party membership is about 500,000.
McKinney is the second former member of Congress from Georgia mounting a presidential run this year. Former 7th District Rep. Bob Barr (R-Ga.) is running for president on the Libertarian Party ticket.
A lighten-rod political figure, McKinney was defeated in 2006 by the 4th District's present congressman, U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), after a much-publicized run-in with a U.S. Capitol police officer and her accusations that the Bush administration covered up information about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
"Don't expect me to keep a count of the major flip flops of the other candidates between now and November, I'm sure there will be plenty," McKinney told the crowd. "They are in this flip flop because they have to appear to share our values — while they serve somebody else."

Georgia: Explosions rock Abkhazia region
Georgian officials report five blasts on both sides of the de-facto border between Georgia and the breakaway region of Abkhazia. The blasts, in the Zugdidi region near the frontier, are the latest evidence of growing tensions between the Georgian government and Abkhazian separatists.
Moscow and Tbilisi accuse each other of stirring tensions in Abkhazia, which broke away along with the region of South Ossetia from Georgian rule during wars in the 1990s. Russia provides financial support and has peacekeepers in both.

Make police chase you, pay for their fuel cost
Soaring fuel prices have forced one police force in the US to increase fines for offending motorists.
From 1 July, drivers caught in Holly Springs, Georgia, will have to pay an extra $12 to cover the costs of police chasing them down.
Recent $4-a-gallon fuel costs have forced other police forces in the US to turn to unusual cost saving measures.
n Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, police patrols are being ordered out of their cars and onto cycle and foot patrols.
In South Fayette, also in Pennsylvania, officers have been told not to sit parked up with air conditioning on. The local police chief told his patrols: "If you want to stay cool, park under a tree."

Man Walks Out Of Savannah Jail Naked, Gets Arrested Again
A man freed from the Chatham County jail faces new charges after he walked out of the jail naked.
Savannah-Chatham County police said they arrested Bill Merit less than a mile from the jail after getting calls that a nude man was walking by a busy roadside during the daytime.
A police report says Merritt told an officer that he didn't take the clothes jailers gave him because he thought they were stolen.
The report said the man "appeared rational, except for being naked."
Jail records show Merrit had been booked two days earlier on charges of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

Georgia town adding $12 fuel charge to speeding tickets
Some cash-strapped US municipalities are resorting to slapping fuel surcharges onto tickets issued to speeding drivers in order to fill dwindling city coffers hit hard by skyrocketing gas prices.
Beginning July 1, the Georgia town of Holly Springs, near the city of Atlanta, will add a surcharge of 12 dollars for each moving violation as a means to avert a budget deficit brought on by high fuel prices.
"It's a creative and innovative idea of our police chief," said Holly CothranDrake, spokeswoman of the city administration which on Wednesday received queries from several American municipalities that are considering similar measures, including Florida's Key West and California's Los Angeles County.
"The reason is to offset the cost of the trend of rising fuel prices," CothanDrake said.
The 12-dollar charge is expected to pull in around 20,000 dollars for the town of 7,700 people.
Nearby Atlanta is conducting a feasibility study for a similar measure that would tack on 10 to 15 dollars per violation.
"The hike in gas prices seriously hurts our ability to patrol," said Clarence Martin, the Atlanta city council member who proposed the measure.
Surging gas prices in the United States now stand at an average of 4.07 dollars per gallon (3.78 liters), a 25-percent increase in just five months. Some cash-strapped US municipalities are resorting to slapping fuel surcharges onto tickets issued to speeding drivers in order to fil... more -

About 1,800 bicyclists converge on Macon
How lovely

One way to see Georgia during these days of $4 a gallon gas prices? Try a bicycle.
That's been the preferred way for cyclists from across the country who come to the Peach State once a year for the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia.
The bike tour, which crosses some 400 miles across the state and is in its 29th year, pedaled into Macon today as hundreds of bicyclists rode 60 miles from Griffin and stopped at First Presbyterian Day School for the night. The group is scheduled to ride to Dublin Tuesday.
"We'll probably have about 1,800 riders," BRAG director Vicki Thompson said. "We're actually up a couple hundred from last year. ... It's a passion. People enjoy the cycling part. It's the same reason why you play tennis or do other activities."
With temperatures reaching a record-tying 100 degrees today, riders probably had to display a bit more love for their sport than usual to complete the leg of the journey.
Connor Timpone, 16, of Gainesville, Ga., is riding in her first BRAG and admitted the scorching temperature had an impact.
"The heat is killer, especially when you're on new asphalt," she said.
But Timpone has ridden bikes ever since she can remember and said she didn't want to miss BRAG for anything.
"I've known a few people who have done this before," she said. "I was the only one in my family that wanted to do it, so I dragged my mother and brother with me."
The family aspect is a big part of BRAG, as many cyclists rode tandem bikes or bikes with attached trailers for children.
Faith Cupka, of Greenville, S.C., rode a tandem with her 11-year-old son, Stephen, while her husband, Cary, rode a bike with a trailer that carried their 6-year-old daughter, Cherilyn.
"We cycle a lot as a family," Faith Cupka said. "It's our family vacation. We did BRAG last year."

Several black-colleges in Georgia - including Paine College in Augusta - are partners in a new project to lower violence, reduce the influence of gangs and drugs, increase quality of life, proviide HIV/AIDS information and provide access to healthcare facilities for low-income and underserved residents
The three-year project is funded by a $255,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation,
"We have identified violence as a public health issue," said Rev. Terence A. Dicks, chairman of New Tools New Vision Augusta in an interview with the United Methodist News Service.
New Tools, New Vision is teaming the resources of the Southeast Community Research Center, the Research Center on Health Disparities at Morehouse College in Atlanta and four communities surrounding historically black colleges and universities in Georgia.
In addition to Paine (a United Methodist school), other colleges participating include Morehouse College in Atlanta, Savannah State University, Albany State University and Fort Valley State University.
The Kellogg grant will build problem-solving partnerships in several cities including Augusta where Paine College faculty will work with inner city communities residents are victims of violence, plagued by youth gangs and are witnesses to a dramatic rise in gun crimes (30901, 30906 zip codes).
Augusta is home to the prestigious and exclusive Masters Golf Tournament at the famous Augusta National Golf Club - that's a rich enclave located near some of Augusta's poorest communities.
