Naslund a Ranger
There was no way Naslund could remain a Canuck. He was too stoic, too quiet, too soft. He didn't take teammates to Chuck E. Cheese's, didn't take his team to the Stanley Cup, didn't kibitz with the media, didn't practise hard and didn't fight. And Naslund wasn't fiery enough as captain due, you know, to being Swedish, although nationality didn't seem to hinder Nicklas Lidstrom as he led the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup last month. Gibbons out, Gaston back in as Blue Jays manager
The Blue Jays are planning a major shakeup with manager John Gibbons expected to be replaced by former manager Cito Gaston, SI.com has learned. Most of the coaching staff is expected to be let go as well.
The Blue Jays had been expected to contend for their first postseason appearance since 1993, when Gaston managed them to their second straight World Series title. Instead, they have struggled, going 35-39 and are in last place in the AL East, 10.5 games behind the first-place Red Sox.
Gibbons is in his fifth year as Toronto's manager and has a 305-305 record. Gaston managed the Blue Jays from 1989-1997, leading the team to four American League East titles and back-to-back World Series crowns in 1992 and 1993. He has not managed since leaving Toronto. Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin captures Hart Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable...
Jun 12, 2008, 8:59 PM EDT TORONTO -- Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin capped an award-filled season by winning his first career Hart Trophy as the National Hockey League's Most Valuable Player and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings captured his sixth Norris Trophy as the League's top defenseman at the 2008 NHL Awards Show.
Ovechkin was a runaway choice for the Hart, receiving 128 of 134 first-place votes for 1,313 points in voting by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who tallied one first-place vote and was the second choice on 66 ballots, was runner-up with 659 points.
Ovechkin tallied 112 points (65 goals, 47 assists) in 82 regular-season games, collecting the Art Ross Trophy as NHL scoring leader and Maurice Richard Trophy as the League’s top goal scorer. He also led all players in power-play goals (22) and game-winning goals (11). Ovechkin set the single-season NHL record for goals by a left wing, surpassing Luc Robitaille's 63 with Los Angeles in 1992-93, and his 65 goals were the most by an NHL player since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96.
