    • NHTA Tow Trucks set Guinness World Record

Many motorists on Ocean Boulevard Sunday thought twice before double parking, leaving the meter empty or blocking any fire lanes.

That's because there were more than 250 tow trucks on the road during the New Hampshire Towing Association's world record attempt for the largest tow truck parade. The NHTA was also in town this weekend for its annual trade show at Hampton Beach State Park.

Flatbeds; wheel-hook tow trucks; massive, 72-ton big-rig wreckers: Every type of tow truck imaginable rolled single file down the streets of Hampton. The parade could be heard long before it was seen, and children, along with a few parents, pumped their fists, encouraging drivers to sound off with airhorns and sirens.

    • Manchester Fire Leaves 100 Homeless

My neighborhood filled with smoke last night as a row of homes caught fire, leaving 100 residents homeless. Amazingly, no injuries. I've linked to the WMUR article discussing the incident, and am attaching some video I shot on my flipcam of the wreckage this morning. The network has footage of the actual fire, which is much more interesting than my day-after footage, but I figured I would get some shots on my bike ride to the bank this morning.

The fire began due to a faulty coffee machine. Lesson, people! Be very careful about appliances and fire safety!

      AND get rental insurance.

    • New Hampshire moves toward decriminalizing marijuana

The N.H. House approved a bill that would decriminalize the possession of up to a quarter of an once of marijuana to a violation instead of a misdemeanor.

The bill was sponsored by Reps. Jeffrey Fontas and Andrew Edwards (D-Nashua), who are also full-time college students. Organizations in support of the bill regarded the house vote as a small victory, though the senate and the governor have expressed no interest in supporting the bill.

CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE — The effort to reduce marijuana penalties in New Hampshire took a step forward in the legislature today, as a subcommittee of the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee approved HB 1623 in a 3-1 vote.

Sponsored by Reps. Jeffrey Fontas (D-Nashua), Andrew Edwards (D-Nashua) and Charles Weed (D-Keene), HB 1623 would reduce the penalty for possessing small amounts of marijuana from a class A misdemeanor to a violation punishable by a maximum fine of $200.

"Today's vote reflects a growing consensus among legislators that New Hampshire's penalties for simple marijuana possession are unnecessarily harsh," explained Matt Simon, executive director of the New Hampshire Coalition for Common Sense Marijuana Policy. "These representatives have taken an honest look at the facts, and they've agreed to support punishments which come closer to fitting the offense."

After over an hour of discussion, which included supporters and opponents of the bill, legislators chose to amend the amount covered by the legislation from 1.25 ounces to .25 ounces. The subcommittee also corrected the drafting error that would have removed penalties for selling marijuana in small amounts. This error had been identified at the bill's Jan. 22 hearing by Karin Eckel of the Attorney General's office. It has been clear throughout the process that the sponsors did not intend to remove penalties for selling marijuana.

Fontas, who serves on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, was accepting of the result.

"Compromise is the instrument of politics," he said following the subcommittee work session. "Ultimately the process worked, and the conversation continues."

Rep. John Tholl (R-Whitefield), a police chief in the town of Dalton, chaired the subcommittee and voted in favor. Reps. David Welch (R-Kingston) and Ellen Neilsen (D-Claremont) also voted in favor, with Rep. Delmar Burridge (D-Keene) opposed.

In voicing his vote of opposition, Burridge said "I'm Nancy Reagan: 'Just Say No.'"

    • The New Hampshire Scam?

A video has surfaced showing how the New Hampshire voting ballots were moved from a secure keycard secured vault to a simple storage room with a secure "seal" over the door. With so many bloggers and journalists writing about inconsistencies in the votes this video is being hailed as hard evidence that something is awry.

The people who are being asked the tough questions seem to be very sheepish in coming forward over why there has been a procedure change. What do you guys think?

    • Why Do We Vote on Tuesday?

In 1845, before Florida, California, and Texas were states or slavery had been abolished, Congress needed to pick a time for Americans to vote. We were an agrarian society. Farmers traveled by horse and buggy, and needed a day to get to the county seat, a day to vote, and a day to get back, without interfering with the three days of worship. So that left Tuesday and Wednesday, but Wednesday was market day. So, Tuesday it was. In 1875 Congress extended the Tuesday date for national House elections and in 1914 for federal Senate elections.

Today, we are an urban society, and we all know how hard it is to get through a busy schedule, let alone stand on lines to vote. Census data over the last decade clearly indicates that the inconvenience of voting is the primary reason Americans are not participating in our elections.

If we can move Columbus Day, Presidents? Day, and Martin Luther King, Jr.?s Holiday for the convenience of shoppers, why not make Election Day more convenient for the sake of voters?

    • Better First Female President: Hillary Clinton Or Elizabeth Kucinich?

Sure America is ready for a female President (or black or Hispanic), but is Hillary really the best option? The media is really trying to hype-up that the reason Hillary is hurting in some polls might be because of sexism (The "Iron My Shirts!" heckler seemed to lend some weight to that arguement. But I wonder. If Hillary's team had planted question-askers in the audience at some events, well, why not a heckler to fire up the female base just before a critical vote? But that's a different topic) Is her slumping polls sexism run amok? I don't believe so. I think it has less to do with her gender and more to do with her uninspired visions and over-friendly corporate agenda. Take for example Elizabeth Kucinich. EVERYONE loves her as much as they love her husband Dennis. Compare and contrast to how Elizabeth explains Dennis' healthcare plan with how Hillary has tried to explain her healthcare plan. Which one makes more sense and which one represents the majority opinion in America? And, hell, which one is more inspiring! If it had been Elizabeth running instead of Hillary what do you think the result would be? Would she be having the exact same troubles as Hillary? Who would make a better President if the race were only between Elizabeth and Hillary? Sure America is ready for a female President (or black or Hispanic), but is Hillary really the best option? The media is really trying... more
