    • Absinthe is back!

"For 95 years, Americans wanting a taste of absinthe had to sneak it in from Europe or Mexico – and risk getting the high-proof herbal liquor confiscated by U.S. Customs.

In May 2007, government officials lifted the ban on the drink once blamed for causing hallucinations and psychosis. A year later, Virginia’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board approved one brand for sale in the state."

It is now available for at select ABC stores for $59.95.

      So what is absinthe, anyway?

      [Source: Wikipedia]

"Absinthe is a distilled, highly alcoholic (45%-75% ABV), anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs, including the flowers and leaves of the herb Artemisia absinthium, also called "wormwood". Absinthe is typically of a natural green color but is also produced in both clear and artificially colored styles. It is often called "the Green Fairy".

Although it is sometimes mistakenly called a liqueur, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar and is therefore classified as a liquor.[1] Absinthe is unusual among spirits in that it is bottled at a high proof but is normally diluted with water when it is drunk."

    • The Louder the Music, The Drunker You Get!?

Customers of bars that play loud music drink more quickly and in fewer gulps, French researchers said on Friday.

Their study, published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, found that turning up the music spurred drinkers to down a glass of beer about three minutes more quickly.

"We have shown that environmental music played in a bar is associated with an increase in drinking," Nicolas Gueguen, a behavioral sciences researcher at the University of Southern Brittany in France, who led the study, said in a statement.

Louder music spurred more consumption, with the average number of drinks ordered by patrons rising to 3.4 drinks from 2.6 drinks, Gueguen found. The time taken to drink a beer fell to an average 11.45 minutes from 14.51 minutes.

They said it was not clear why louder music appeared to increase alcohol consumption but said it might make conversation more difficult, forcing people to drink more and talk less.

    • Drunken passenger tires to open airplane door- WHILE IN FLIGHT!

"A drunken passenger tried to open the door of a British charter plane over the Atlantic before he was restrained by crew, other passengers were quoted Thursday as saying.

The Boeing 767 made an unscheduled landing on Bermuda to offload the man, who had been drinking from bottles bought earlier at an airport duty-free shop, passengers were quoted as saying by the Daily Mail newspaper.

He had been arguing with other passengers, then when told to quieten down by crew members, he went to the aircraft's door and started meddling with it. The crew stopped him opening it.

'The captain decided it was better to make an unscheduled landing,' said a spokeswoman of the charter company, First Choice.

The passengers were put up at hotels before continuing their trip to Cuba. The man was detained by local police and faces a heavy fine and bill for the unscheduled stop."

    • Wife Kills Husband With Folding Couch

Talk about the ultimate in comfort.

A Russian woman in St. Petersburg killed her drunken husband with a folding couch, Russian media reported Wednesday.

St. Petersburg's Channel Five said the man's wife, upset with her husband for being drunk and refusing to get up, kicked a handle after an argument, activating a mechanism that folds the couch up against a wall.

The couch, which doubles as a bed, folds up automatically in order to save space. The man fell between the mattress and the back of the couch, Channel Five quoted emergency workers as saying.

The woman then walked out of the room and returned three hours later to check on what she thought was an unusually quiet sleeping husband.

      Police refused to comment.

The St. Petersburg Emergency Services Ministry said a private rescue service removed the man's body.

Video on the television channel's Web site showed emergency workers sawing away the side panels of a couch to remove a man in his underwear lying headfirst between the cushions.

Emergency workers said the man died instantly.

    • Drunk infiltrates team of firefighters

"When fire breaks out, it's all hands on deck!"

Firefighters called to a blaze at an apartment building in a southern German town were astonished to discover a fully equipped extremely drunk imposter in their ranks.

On hearing the alarm, the 38-year-old man had rushed to the fire station, was helped into protective clothing and helmet by unsuspecting firefighters and boarded the fire engine, a spokesman for Suedhessen police said.

After arriving at the apartments, firefighters quickly realized the man was an imposter and called the police, he added.

He was released without charge after sobering up overnight in a police cell.

    • Waitress wins £60,000 over "groping"

A 35 year old waitress has been awarded almost £60,000 after taking her boss to an employment tribunal.

Jane Price from Plymouth, UK, claimed that her life was "destroyed" by bullying and sexual harassment subjected on her by her "drunken" boss. Peter Tunney was reportedly "asked to inspect her breasts after she had a surgical enhancement", and accused her of sleeping with the owner of the Steak and Omelette bar where they both worked. In another incident, Mr. Tunney is alleged to have "tried to climb on top of her and felt her breasts" in a "drunken advance", although she did not deny that after her shift ended, she exposed her breasts to fellow employees".

After complaining to him, she was apparently "sacked by text" two days later. Fair enough, but £60 grand?!

All of my participation on Current (for the most part) has been based in politics. Often, said participation has been 'aaaaaaaaargh' inclined.

A friend of mine taped this bit. It literally made me howl, I was at work (when I watched it) and my mascara was mussed thusly, I looked like Alice Cooper the rest of the night ... just thought I'd share the laugh. An exercise in levity if you will.

      Enjoy ... hopefully.

If you're put off ... spare me the angry missives.

Note: No animals were harmed in the production of this film. Piss-drunk, yeah, mebbee ... but outside of a wee headache the next day, the critter made it through without a mark. (My friend assured me of such.)

    • Harsh binge drinking adverts roll out

In a bid to curb the ever increasing numbers of binge drinkers on the streets of Britain, a new advertising campaign has been launched which shows the stark reality of going out and drinking 20 vodka and cokes.

One of the messages in the campaign reads, "You wouldn't start a night like this, so why end it that way?" with a girl smearing vomit into her beautiful locks.

Another of the ads shows a man getting ready for his big night out, except he rips out his ear-ring, smashes his face into a wardrobe door, urinates on his shoes and then spills a kebab all down his shirt.
