Flexible screen could lead to foldable computers
Researchers have demonstrated a flexible television screen which could result in people folding up their computer and putting it in their pocket.
The design could be used for television and posters, as well as computers, while it could also pave the way for the development of newspaper display technology which would allow readers to upload daily news to an easy-to-carry display contraption.
The concept demo was unveiled by researchers from Sony and the Max Planck Institute in Germany who believe "Rigid television screens, bulky laptops and still image posters are to be a thing of the past".
It is all organic, flexible and transparent with an extremely low energy requirement, while it has an almost unlimited viewing angle and high efficiency.
There is no need for a backlight and response times are up to 10 times fast than LCDs (liquid crystal displays), meaning ultra-smooth motion without blurring.
Due to the transparency, it is thought multiple layers can be stacked possibly for some types of 3D effects.
Previous attempts at flexible screens are hampered by size and resolution problems, while the image was also affected when the screen was folded.
Moving images on posters, seen in films such as Minority Report could also be a possibility, as well as cereal boxes with talking images.
Researchers told the Journal of Physics: "The displays have excellent brightness and are transparent, bendable and flexible.
"There are practically no display size limitations and they could be produced relatively easily and cheaply compared to today's screens."
In 2006, Sony demonstrated an earlier version of this work, but technical, mechanical and design issues prevented them from mass producing the previous model. Screaming Skull Protective Mask
Coolest Gadgets:
Obviously, writing for a gadget site, I find gadgets cool. However, at some point you find yourself with as many gadgets as you really need, possibly more. At which case you have to figure out what to do with the money you set aside for gadget funding. This is the point when you can either keep buying gadgets or find ways to pamper the ones you currently have with skins and cases. The PS3 already has a nice sleek design, the all black case looks plenty good all on its own.
Frankly in most cases I would never consider covering it, yet this cover is probably the one cover that could change my mind. The protective mask cover features a screaming skull trying to push its way out of your PS3. It is also a little different than a skin, because it isn’t actually a sticky cover. It’s a hard shell that attaches instead of being just a giant pretty sticker. It is being sold on SourcingMap for $10.99 a piece.

Sony electronic book reader lIve in UK
The Japanese electronics company is getting some help from Britain's biggest book chain for the UK launch of its electronic book.
After many false starts, ebooks finally appear to be gaining traction with consumers in the U.S.
Now Sony is hoping to replicate that success with launch of its Reader product in the UK.
Reuters Technology Correspondent Matt Cowan reports.
So far this was a flop in the US. But the question is will the new reader replace reading books online?
There is something about reading a real book that is comforting.
But for authors that can't afford to publish, this could help them greatly, but will we embrace it? The Japanese electronics company is getting some help from Britain's biggest book chain for the UK launch of its electronic book.... more -

Sony announces high-end Blu-ray player
"Breaking this year's IFA mould and not just announcing yet another new flat-screen telly, Sony has unveiled a Blu-ray player for those that laugh in the face of the credit crunch.
Given the catchy title of BDP-S5000ES, this new BD player by Sony offers some nifty new features. Top of the list is the sci-fi sounding HD Reality Enhancer, which is said to reduce jaggies and film grain by continuously analysing your Blu-ray disc's video stream, making for a much smoother movie watch.
Alongside this, Sony has added a bitmapping tool into the equation. This is meant to brighten and enhance colour, bringing 8 bit video depth to 14 bit. All this video enhancing sounds impressive and is almost impressive as the player's sound which decodes and bit streams ALL audio formats. Nice..." Sony Ericsson Xperia: delayed or not?
"There have been far too many rumours about when the Sony Xperia X1 is going to land. Some say it's as late as February 2009, some say next month. The Sony Ericsson site seemed to have settled the matter when it showed the handset coming in January 2009.
But now Boy Genius Reports has shown the site has now changed its mind, and will be releasing the X1 in October, Beans spilt Retailer Expansys appeared to have broken the silence on this device by showing the phone and even going so far as to list a price for it. But what's the truth?
If the official Sony Ericsson website carries on the way it is, we could have the Windows Mobile totin' smartphone in just over 30 days...which would be nice. But lest we forget tales of incompatibility with Windows Mobile 6.1 that could screw the whole thing up again..." "There have been far too many rumours about when the Sony Xperia X1 is going to land. Sony Unveils World's Thinnest and Lightest LCD TV
"After so many years in the doldrums, there can be little doubt that Sony really is back as a major player in the electronics business. The latest standout product from the Tokyo giant is a Bravia TV that happens to be both the thinnest and lightest LCD set on the market.
The Bravia KDL-40ZX1 goes on sale in Japan on 10 November.
The newcomer uses wireless technology (a 5GHz link) to pipe video from a separate receiver to the scree. Sony says the thinness was achieved by dispensing with traditional backlighting and building white LEDs into the edges of the frame..
The Bravia KDL-40XX1 also contains all manner of connections, including three HDMI ports, a LAN socket and a USB port..."

Thinking of stealing a PS3? Think again!
Dustin Walker thought he had it all when his fiancee brought him home his very own Sony PS3, until the police knocked at his door.
Turns out his loving fiancee had bought the console from the a local pawn shop not realising that the PS3 was actually stolen, and that the policeman at his door was there to collect his prize and joy.
He was only traced down to Sony's nifty network which tracked the console via its IP address, because he'd been logged in under "someone else's name—someone who'd reported their system stolen as part of a larger ring of crime." Sony Euro Boss: 'Get Games From BitTorrent if You Want To'
Offers a solution to criticisms of 4-5 month delays of PAL region games arriving in far off "down under" locales like New Zealand and Australia, even going so far as to suggest users "download PSP games, it's up to you."
Apparently Sony gamers "down under" in New Zealand and Australia are so far removed from their European cousins that they regularly experience 4-5 month delays in getting shipments of new PAL region game release titles.
The experience has been frustrating for gamers trying to legally purchase copies of the latest and greatest games that are released each month and the issue was raised recently with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves at E3, the annual trade show for the computer and video games industry.
In an interview with Buttonmasher he offers some solutions to this distribution lag that are so shockingly honest and realistic that it makes you wonder if there's an ulterior motive at work here.
He starts off by saying that there will continue to be a 4-5 month delay for Sony gamers in New Zealand and Australia.
"I think honestly you will continue to do that because I don’t think that the localization is controlled enough in the USA to be able to put it into New Zealand," Reeves comments.
So what's his advice? Download the games from BitTorrent.
"We are a PAL market and we are going to do it in PAL and we are going to do it properly, you can wait for it and you can have it in good quality, you know you can get the stuff from Bittorrent if you want to and download PSP games, it’s up to you," he continues.
Shocking right? He even promotes the downloading of PSP games from BitTorrent which makes it all the more curious. I'm not sure that he's promoting piracy per se, but I do think he's one of those rare types of people who acknowledge the reality of content distribution and is merely suggesting what many in both New Zealand and Australia already do.
He understands that people don't want to wait 5 months to get their hands on new game releases when they could just as easily get it for free and at the same time as everybody else. It already happens in Australia when it comes to TV shows and movies.
I just can't figure out why Reeves didn't give a standard "we're looking into it" answer. It really does make you wonder if there's a catch, or maybe years of being an active file-sharer has just made me a tad paranoid.
Either way, "Cheers" to David Reeves for being an honest man. Offers a solution to criticisms of 4-5 month delays of PAL region games arriving in far off "down under" locales like New Ze... more -

Sony, Samsung look to upgrade HD television
Sony and Samsung are ready to give high definition television an upgrade. The two electronics giants have come together to form a consortium to provide high definition television to consumers wirelessly. Sony and Samsung, along with Motorola, Sharp and Hitachi announced their plan to develop an industry standard technology around from Amimon Ltd of Israel. The technology is called Wireless Home Digital Interface, or WHDI.
Wireless streaming high definition is difficult for electronics manufacturers to produce because the signal has to be compressed for transmission in order to be broadcast. This compression often results in loss of picture quality on the screen. However, Amimon's foray into the field has shown enough promise that major manufacturers feel confident using it as the basis of their initiative.
Consumers who currently have a tangle of wires running from the television to a blu ray player to a gaming console can look forward to having the jumble reduced. Because WHDI transmits wirelessly, that mess might soon go away. Sony and Samsung are ready to give high definition television an upgrade. Carry your lardarse lady to safety! PlayStation launches "Fat Princess" ...
Apparently responding to female gamers' calls for more and better representation of women, Titan Studios/Sony has launched a new PlayStation game called "Fat Princess." I'm not kidding.
According to PlayStation, "Frantic and fun, Fat Princess pits two hordes of players against each other in comic medieval battle royale. Your goal is to rescue your beloved princess from the enemy dungeon. There’s a catch though: your adversary has been stuffing her with food to fatten her up and it’s going to take most of your army working together to carry her back across the battlefield."
Wow. This isn't even a joke. Sony has certainly got the wheels of publicity spinning - online debate and bitchery have begun in earnest, and it's certainly intense.
Some gaming bloggers are pleased - and surprised - by just how good the game is:
"With the title and logo the way it is, it may be hard to think of Fat Princess as a real hardcore title, but that's exactly what it is. Fights always end in bloody messes. After a massive battle, you'll see body parts and blood soaking the entirety of the floor. With its unique art style, high concept, and fun presentation, we can't wait to play Fat Princess when it debuts exclusively on the PSN later this year."
And from one eloquent and angry female gamer, this gem:
"Anyway, congrats on your awesome new game, Sony. I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes. It's not often I have the opportunity to congratulate a cutting-edge tech company on such splendiferous retrofuck jackholery. Way to go! The Fat Princess of Shakes Manor salutes you."
A moment's pause please, for 'splendiferous retrofuck jackholery'. Mmm, delicious.
So, "Fat Princess" - a harmless joke, a justified reaction to developments in the real world (where of course everyone is piling on the pounds, if moral panics are to be believed), or a shocking example of sexism, fattism, and just plain wrong-ism? Let the games begin... Apparently responding to female gamers' calls for more and better representation of women, Titan Studios/Sony has launched a new ... more -

Sony cutting price of PS3, adding video downloads
LOS ANGELES - In a bid to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive gaming business, Sony announced Tuesday that it will cut the price of its high-end PlayStation 3 console by $100. It also will introduce downloads of movies and TV shows to the game machine's online store and, with some software partners, roll out a number of exclusive games.
The moves suggested that Sony still views Microsoft as its chief rival rather than market leader Nintendo, which seems focused on extending its lead. But, of course, that's not how Sony brass portrayed its announcements at a press event here at the game industry's E3 conference.
Sony's PlayStation brand in general and the PS3 in particular are "just beginning to hit [their] stride," said Jack Tretton, CEO of the North American branch of Sony Computer Entertainment, which oversees the PlayStation products.
While Sony focused on Microsoft, Nintendo showed that its focus is still on attracting a broad audience. The company announced a sequel to its popular - and accessible - "Wii Sports" game, and introduced a new title in the same vein, dubbed "Wii Music."
But Nintendo also showed an eagerness to compete with its two rivals on what is arguably their turf, announcing that a new version of "Grand Theft Auto" is coming out for its DS handheld.
Five years ago, the "common sense" view was to be pessimistic about Nintendo's future because it had lost out to Sony in two consecutive console cycles, noted LOS ANGELES - In a bid to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive gaming business, Sony announced Tuesday that it will cut the ... more
