Bill Gates Says His Goodbyes And Bids Microsoft Adieu To Become A Philanthropist
On his final full day at Microsoft Corp., Bill Gates went on stage to reminisce with his longtime friend Steve Ballmer, and neither man could hold back tears as Ballmer handed Gates a large scrapbook as a farewell present.
Gates, who is stepping back to focus on his philanthropy, sat with Chief Executive Officer Ballmer in a Microsoft conference room and meandered through moments in Microsoft's history. They stopped to get in a few good digs at IBM Corp., whose first personal computers were loaded with Microsoft's DOS operating system before IBM adopted its own operating software and their relations strained.
"They went off with OS 2, we were left with good old Windows, and sure enough the David versus Goliath story came out with the right ending," said Gates, eliciting laughter from the crowd of 830 Microsoft employees. The Microsoft co-founder whose boyish face and nerdy manner epitomizes the US software colossus spends his last day at the office on Friday.
Paul Allen, who teamed with Gates to start Microsoft in a garage in 1975, will be among those "roasting" his childhood friend at a gala dinner affair Friday night.
After decades devoted to Microsoft, Gates turns his attention full time to the philanthropic Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation he established with his wife.
Gates leaves Microsoft to wrestle with a fast-changing computer era and growing challenges from Internet juggernaut Google and longtime rival Apple, which makes Macintosh computers.
Three people will essentially fill the void Gates leaves behind at Microsoft.
Gate's job as chief software architect is being handled by Ray Ozzie.
Craig Mundie inherited Gate's chief research and strategy officer duties, while former Harvard University classmate Steve Ballmer is chief executive officer at the software colossus based in Redmond, Washington.
Gates remains chairman of the Microsoft board of directors and its largest shareholder.
Microsoft is losing Gates at a time when "cloud computing" is shaking the packaged software foundation on while the company's fortune is built.

South Korea's president to donate salary to the poor
Lee Myung-Bak pledged to donate his entire salary during his five-year-term to the underprivileged. He already has a massive fortune from his previous job as CEO of an engineering and construction company. So instead of just getting richer, he's promised to put his money where his mouth is.
He said, "I promised to spend my whole salary earned as a public official on public welfare.... My plan to donate the presidential salary to the underprivileged is an extension of that promise."

How Qatar Helped Katrina Victims
"In the wake of the hurricane, which hit the north-central Gulf coast in August of 2005, the State of Qatar was among the first countries to commit financial support to the victims of the storm. Almost immediately after the damage was assessed, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, pledged $100 million toward the rebuilding of New Orleans, Mississippi, and other areas destroyed by the hurricane. One month later, in September of 2005, the Qatar Katrina Fund was formed.
The Fund provides direct assistance to the victims of the storm in the form of student scholarships, health care, and the construction of homes and community centers, among other things. "We Are All Witnesses" includes a detailed report of gifts given, along with a complete list and description of the organizations and programs that received contributions. Several universities, medical centers, and non-profit organizations were included on the list, as well as housing projects like Habitat for Humanity." $65 million left for gay rights
"Ric Weiland, who helped his friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen launch Microsoft, was a quiet philanthropist. But his final gift has provided one of the most powerful financial boosts ever to the gay-rights movement.
Weiland has left $65 million to the Pride Foundation in Seattle and 10 nonprofit organizations, believed to be the largest estate gift ever given to the gay and lesbian community in the U.S.
His generosity didn't stop there.
Weiland left $160 million, the majority of his estate, to charity. That includes a gift to Stanford University estimated to be worth $60 million, which the university said is the largest bequest it has ever received. Weiland also gave significant amounts toward environmental protection and scientific research."

Anonymous Donor Gives $130 Million For Bangladeshi Aid
An unnamed donor has given $130 million to Bangladesh to rebuild schools and storm shelters destroyed by a cyclone in 2007.
The donation, which was made through the Saudi Arabian Islamic Development Bank, has been called the single largest donation ever made by an individual to Bangladesh.
A commission led by the World Bank estimates that the Bangladesh cyclone has caused economic losses worth $1.6 billion. An unnamed donor has given $130 million to Bangladesh to rebuild schools and storm shelters destroyed by a cyclone in 2007. ... more -

GOT JELLO? - Jello Shots for ... Charity?
OASIS is a student run and organized community service umbrella organization at Northwestern University. In addition to serving at a number of different volunteer sites around the Chicago area, members of OASIS hold numerous creative and beneficial philanthropy events throughout the year. This fall, they put on "GOT JELLO? - Jello Shots for Charity" in order to raise money for Mary Lou's Place, a shelter for battered women in Evanston, IL. With sixteen dedicated contestants and entry fees at $20 a person, everyone involved was so happy to be together and supporting such an amazing event, service group, and volunteer organization.
