    • Army orders Lions draft pick Campbell to withdraw

DETROIT (AP)—Caleb Campbell will not get a chance to play for the Detroit Lions because of a change in military policy.

Campbell was a seventh-round draft pick for the Lions in April. At the time, Army policy would have allowed the West Point graduate to serve as a recruiter if he made the team.

But a subsequent Department of Defense policy has superseded the 2005 Army policy.

In a letter to Lions president Matt Millen dated Wednesday, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan P. Liba wrote that Campbell has been ordered to give up professional football for “full-time traditional military duties.”

Liba wrote that 2nd Lt. Campbell may ask to be released from his active duty obligations in May 2010.

Liba said Campbell was allowed to enter the draft “in good faith.”

    • Packers are shopping Brett Favre

The Green Bay Packers have spoken to several teams, including at least one NFC team, to see what they would be willing to offer for quarterback Brett Favre, NFL Network reports.

The report did not indicate how many teams were contacted in what were termed 'exploratory' phone calls.

Sporting News contributor Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com reports that the Ravens were one of the teams the Packers contacted to gauge interest in Favre. The Ravens told Green Bay they were not interested, Florio writes.

One source speculated for NFL Network that the Packers are simply gauging what Favre is worth on the open market before deciding whether to try to trade him. Favre has said that he does want to play in 2008, and he asked for his release from the Packers, indicating he would be willing to play for a different team if Green Bay doesn't want him.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that other teams potentially interested in Favre are the Bears, Bills, Buccaneers, Chiefs, Dolphins, Falcons, Jets, Lions, Panthers, Redskins and Vikings.

      ======
How ironic would it be that the Packers trade Favre to Atlanta and wind up finishing his career where it started, remember he was drafted by the Falcons.

    • Brett Favre: Packers should let me play elsewhere

Brett Favre finally is speaking for himself: He wants to play but doesn't feel welcome in Green Bay, so he's asking to be released.

Favre said he was "never fully committed" to retiring and felt pressured by the Packers to make a decision, a notion Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy tried to dispel in an interview with the AP on Saturday.

"Ted always wanted Brett back," McCarthy said. "We always wanted Brett back."

Favre told Fox he understands that the Packers want to move on — but if they're doing so, they should let him go.

    • Favre wants release from Packers

Brett Favre asked the Packers to release him so he can return to the NFL with another team after apparently being told his latest retirement reversal wasn’t welcome news in Green Bay.

The team said it would do “what’s right” in response to Favre’s request, which was first reported by ESPN.

“Brett earned and exercised the right to retire on his terms,” the team’s statement said.

“We wanted him to return and welcomed him back on more than one occasion. Brett’s press conference and subsequent conversations in the following weeks illustrated his commitment to retirement. The finality of his decision to retire was accepted by the organization. At that point, the Green Bay Packers made the commitment to move forward with our football team.”

The 38-year-old Favre retired March 6 after a 17-year career, but almost immediately began dropping hints that he was having second thoughts.

The Packers statement said Favre now has the right to petition NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to be reinstated, at which point he would return to the team’s active roster.

      AP - Jul 9, 4:07 pm EDT
But the statement did not specify what the Packers would do after that, beyond doing “what’s right and in the best interest of the team.”

If the team has committed to moving forward without Favre, their options once he was reinstated would include trading him to another team or releasing him so he would be free to sign with the team of his choice. The Packers already have committed to going with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a first-round pick in 2005 who has been sitting behind Favre for his first three seasons in the NFL.

Releasing Favre presents the possibility that he will sign with NFC North rivals Minnesota or Chicago, where he would be an upgrade over the incumbent QBs. If the Packers traded him, there would be teams outside the division such as Baltimore or Tampa Bay, and perhaps Washington, that would be interested. There also has been speculation he could go to Miami for disgruntled defensive end Jason Taylor, the 2006 defensive player of the year.

It would be an ugly end to what has been one of the most celebrated partnerships in recent NFL history.

“As with all Packers greats, Brett’s legacy will always be celebrated by our fans and the organization, regardless of any change in his personal intentions,” the statement said. “Brett and Deanna will always be a part of the Packers family.”

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported Friday that sources close to Favre and the team told him agent James “Bus” Cook asked the Packers for Favre’s release in a letter because the Packers were not receptive to the idea of Favre wanting to play again.

    • Olbermann & Patrick are Reunited

Very possibly the best SportsCenter duo in the history of the network, Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann will once again share the screen thanks to NBC. Bob Costas will host the NFL show that includes Cris Collinsworth, Jerome Bettis, Tiki Barber and Peter King. Can't wait for this. Great times but makes me think of my favorite SportsCenter anchors, teams and hosts. There were many but who's your favorite?

      From the article
      By Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY
Dan Patrick, the longtime ESPN anchor, will this season join NBC's Sunday night NFL studio show – where he'll reunite with Keith Olbermann, his on-air ESPN SportsCenter partner between 1992 and 1997.

Patrick will also join a big cast on a show wrapped around NBC's Sunday primetime game.

He'll be the show's third co-host – along with Olbermann and Cris Collinsworth – on a show hosted by Bob Costas that includes analysts Jerome Bettis, Tiki Barber and reporter Peter King.

Said Olbermann Monday: "My concern is that we didn't have enough people on the show. We really needed that 19th guy."

Patrick, who left ESPN last year and now hosts a syndicated daytime radio show, had a contract that prohibited him TV work until this September. His NBC deal will also include working on NBC's Olympic coverage, starting with the 2010 Winter Games.

Monday, NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol and Patrick both said the idea for Patrick joining the NBC show came from Costas.

Said Patrick: "If Bob didn't sign off on this, there's no way I'd walk into the room."

    • Bret Favre Considers Return to Football

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Brett Favre is considering coming out retirement, according to an ESPN report. ESPN's Chris Mortensen said Wednesday a Green Bay Packers source told him the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play.

The Packers' former quarterback retired March 6 after a 17-year career.

Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's NFL Live that Favre also made similar comments to him.

"I know he has the itch to come back and play," Harris said. "If he will or not, I don't know."

The Packers had planned to use Aaron Rodgers as their quarterback for the upcoming season.

"Aaron is our quarterback," Harris said. "Brett's retired. But if he wanted to come back, there would be some guys who wouldn't mind it. I would welcome him back with open arms."

Favre's commitment to retirement has been questioned since his announcement. That talk resumed in mid-June when Favre withdrew from the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, scheduled for July 11-13.

Tournament spokesman Steve Griffith said then that Favre had to miss the event because of a scheduling conflict.

Favre is the NFL's only three-time MVP and leads the league with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 yards passing and 160 career victories. He started 253 consecutive regular-season games, more than any other quarterback in history. Including the playoffs, his streak stands at 275.

    • Don Imus strikes again: shock jock uses racial remark in discussion about "Pacman"

Today, Don Imus did it again. While on the air with his co-host, the topic of Adam "Pacman" Jones being arrested six times in two years while playing for the NFL Tennessee Titans was brought up. Imus ask his co-host, what color was "Pacman" ? His co-host referred, "he's African American. Imus then said, " Well, there you go, now you know ", suggesting that there should be no surprise to his multiple arrest because, he's Black. Imus, as everyone in radio does, knew that Adam Jones was Black. He was suggesting to the radio listeners that they should have been surprised at all.

Network officials were not available for immediate comment. Most people were surprised that Imus was hired by any station after his racial remarks were made about the African American women on the Rutgers University basketball team a while back. Most will be surprised if he remains on the air at all this time, after suggesting to American radio listeners that, people should not be surprise about the criminal records of African Americans.

Adam Jones was suspended for a full season by NFL Commisioner, Roger Goodell for being part of a group that was involved in a Las Vegas strip club brawl that left one man paralyzed for life, after being shot by a member of Pacman;s click. Jones had foolishly allowed the club to use $100,000.00 dollars of his personal money to "make it rain" one hundred dollar bills at midnight on New Years Eve of 2007. The money was left unprotected and fight broke out between members of Pacman's entourage and club employees. Jones was charged but not found guilty of directly being in the brawl. He recently sign a new contract with Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones. The league has not yet completely lifted his suspension, however he has been granted permission to practice with the team.

35-year-old convicted NFL steroids dealer David Jacobs and his 30-year-old girlfriend, Amanda Jo Earhart-Savell, were found dead in in his home in Plano, TX on Thursday morning. Both had been shot.

Jacobs was convicted on federal steroid distribution charges last year, and was sentenced to three years probation and fined $25,000 on May 1st after pleading guilty.

Jacobs claimed he dealt primarily with two NFL players, identifying one of them as offensive lineman Matt Lehr. The two would then distribute the drugs among other players. Lehr has denied the allegations.

He recently met with NFL officials and gave them documented evidence of players who had received the drugs. The officials were examining the evidence to determine whether to seek discipline against those players.

    • NFL Power Rankings have the Champion at No.6

The ESPN has pulled out the first NFL Power Rankings since the end of the season and a long list of questions have popped up. The most important - how good are the guys at the ESPN when it's time to predict the NFL Power Rankings? You can see the full list of the NFL Power Rankings by clicking here, but for most of the football fans, it's a shocker that the 2008 Super Bowl winner the New York Giants made it only to No.6 on the list, considering there were little changes in the team so far. The reason for the low ranking of the Giants - "Teams other than the Patriots aren't supposed to repeat as Super Bowl champions" - no respect for the Giants whatsoever. And to add insult to injury, the NFL Power Rankings have the Cowboys at No.4, which means that the Super Bowl winner, a.k.a. The Champion, failed to even be the best in its division, the NFC East.

But to be fair, the odds makers bank little on the New York Giants this season, as well. At the online sportsbook BodogSports, the Giants are sitting on the long 16/1 odds to win the next Big Game, while the Patriots are once again the favorite football team with odds 10/3. The NFL Power Rankings published by the ESPN indeed follow the odds reported on the next Super Bowl winner - the Indianapolis Colts are at 15/2, the Cowboys and the Chargers follow with 8/1 each and the Jacksonville Jaguars hold odds of 12/1 to win the next Championship.

You have to wonder what the list would be if it was based only on their athletic ability with out the influence of their personal life. I know that I would finally have to accept that TO is a good player and may not deserve to be bashed as much as he does. It would also mean that I would have to let go of my hatred for Vick, which is based solely on his outside behavior regarding the dog fighting.
I know Becks is not a number 1 pick, but I think he deserves to be on the list. I know that he was a superstar in EU but seriously he hasn't done that much outside of being the spotlight to soccer. While it does have its value, if we are basing this only on athletic performance he would be on my list.
