Switchover to Fuel Cell Vehicles Will Cut Emissions, Cost Billions
Fuel cell technologies have the potential to greatly curtail the U.S.'s oil use and carbon dioxide emissions, but extensive public and private investment are necessary to make a significant impact in the coming decades, according to the National Research Council.
The group researched and developed a best case scenario for fuel cell development and deployment in the U.S., publishing it's findings the report "Transitions to Alternative Transportation Technologies: A Focus on Hydrogen." The main barriers to widespread use of fuel cell vehicles, the report concludes, are vehicle price and lack of production and distribution infrastructure.
Even with increased funding and research, the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles won't be competitive with fossil fuel-burning vehicles until 2023. The Council says fuel cell vehicle production could start ramping up in 2015, with about 2 million vehicles maximum on the roads by 2020.
Once the cost barrier comes down, there could be 60 million fuel cell vehicles zipping around by 2035 and 200 million by 2050. The Council takes into account the cost of hydrogen fuel over a vehicle's lifetime in comparing its cost to conventional vehicles.
That best case scenario can only be met with vigorous investment and action. The Council says the government will need to put up $55 billion in funding from 2008-2023, and private industry will need to pump $145 billion into fuel cells during the same period.
Currently, the federal government is running the $1.2 billion Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, which was announced at the 2003 State of the Union Address. On the West Coast, the California Fuel Cell Partnership is working to spread the use of fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations. Fuel cell technologies have the potential to greatly curtail the U.S.'s oil use and carbon dioxide emissions, but extensive public and... more -
BMW Hydrogen 7: A Sedan Fueled by the Future
As with hydrogen cars from Ford, General Motors, Honda and others, showcasing hydrogen’s carbon-free potential is the BMW’s reason for being. But unlike far-costlier fuel-cell cars — which generate electricity through a chemical reaction of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen — the BMW runs on either liquid hydrogen or gasoline in a familiar internal-combustion engine. Fuel From Food Waste: Bacteria Provide Power
Researchers have combined the efforts of two kinds of bacteria to produce hydrogen in a bioreactor, with the product from one providing food for the other. According to an article in the August issue of Microbiology Today, this technology has an added bonus: leftover enzymes can be used to scavenge precious metals from spent automotive catalysts to help make fuel cells that convert hydrogen into energy.

Regular cars can run on hydrogen
A group from Sheffield, UK has unveiled what they believe is the frontrunner in the race to provide a renewable, green fuel for motoring.
ITM Power has developed a fuel station called an 'electrolyser', which is designed to be used in the home, and can turn water and electricity into Hydrogen, which produces zero emissions as a fuel, as well as Oxygen.
Previous attempts to do this have been succesful, but ITM claims that their way will massively reduce the costs involved.
A full tank of Hydrogen, which can be filled overnight, will allow around 25 miles of driving: not enough for long distance journeys, but ample for the commuters who make up a large proportion of UK drilvers.
If the unit can be mass produced, its makers say that it will not only provide a clear fuel for motorists, but could also power a range of items around the home. Fill up your car... at your home hydrogen fuel station
A fuel station producing enough hydrogen to run householders' homes and cars has been unveiled today.
The British invention, due to go on sale within two years, is roughly the size of a heating boiler and will cost under £2,000.
Its creators say it will revolutionise commuting, help homeowners slash energy bills, and give easy access to a fuel that does not produce carbon dioxide emissions, helping to combat climate change.
ITM Power also unveiled a Ford Focus that has been converted to run on hydrogen.
The hydrogen generator, which when it goes on sale will be small enough to fit in a garage or home, will use water and offpeak electricity to generate the gas.
It will be stored in a pressurised tank and can be used to provide power for a range of domestic or commercial purposes.

Hydrogen refuel station unveiled in the UK
A hydrogen refuelling station which could be installed in the home as an alternative to visiting a petrol station has been unveiled.
Users will need a hydrogen-powered car to go with it although the system can also be used for heating and cooking.
The hydrogen home refuelling station works via an electrolyser which produces the gas from water and electricity. An internal combustion generator converts the gas back into electricity to provide power for the home.
In terms of producing hydrogen to power a car, the unit can make enough gas overnight to provide fuel for 25 miles. The hope is eventually to have higher-pressure refuelling units in public places which would be capable of offering enough hydrogen for cars to travel 100 miles.
While some scientists are hopeful of the fuel uses of hydrogen, many others are sceptical because it is inefficient to produce, expensive to transport and to convert into electricity. A hydrogen refuelling station which could be installed in the home as an alternative to visiting a petrol station has been unveiled. ... more -

Hydrogen Economy - Earth will run out of water
If we do decide to go to a hydrogen based economy, where hydrogen becomes our sole source of energy, there is one tiny problem.
Hydrogen is the only gas that is able to escape our atmosphere and dissipate into space. When this happens, water that is used to produce hydrogen gas will disappear from our the planet and will never be able to be replaced. Given a system wide leakage factor of two or three percent, and the huge amount of water that will be required to create the hydrogen/oxygen mixture that will power fuel cells and hydrogen engines, it will only be a mater of time until all the earth's water is gone. If we do decide to go to a hydrogen based economy, where hydrogen becomes our sole source of energy, there is one tiny problem. ... more -
Company unveils hydrogen hybrid supercar: available fall 2008
Written by Nick Chambers
Well, here it is folks. A company has finally gone and built the controversial hydrogen hybrid system (or hydrogen injection, or Water4Gas or HHO system – choose your poison) into what appears to be a true production car. Not only that, the car looks, well, stunning… to put it mildly.
Ronn Motors of Austin, Texas, yesterday unveiled what they’re calling “the key to a new generation of “green cars.” The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Ronn Maxwell, had this to say about it: “What we are revealing today is an innovation in the automotive industry and demonstrates American ingenuity at a time of real need. We’re designing and building cars with performance components and unique styling with the objective of making the new environmentally friendly vehicle stand out with never before seen style and approximately 40 mpg plus efficiency.”
“Move over Bugatti, Lamborghini and Saleen, the Ronn Motors Scorpion is a supercar that will scoot 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and achieve 40 mpg, too.”

Honda Solar Powered Hydrogen refueling station
Pictures of the refueling station of the GREEN FUTURE.
Leave it to Honda, when American Car companies can't get their act together.
I did everything in my power to buy American for years. Finally one day I said enough is enough and I went out and got a HONDA.
Three years later. Three new ACCORDS later.
I am sold on the company.
Not one service visit. Not one problem. Great gas mileage and the 4 cylinders will flat out GO.
Will be buying another one and that is saying a great deal coming from me.
Would I rather buy a CHEVY, SATURN, FORD, YOU BET.
BE REAL HARD NOW TO BRING ME BACK unless it was a TRUCK.
A Hydrogen fuel cell TRUCK maybe.
I am very big on boycotting energy companies, and all big caps who seek to control this Country. I don't see that with some of these excellent international companies and so they will get my support and my consumer consideration.
WHAT WENT WRONG WITH BIG CAP IN THIS COUNTRY? GREED.

Aviation first: Boeing plane flies on hydrogen, fuel cells
Engineers from across Europe have successfully developed and flown a manned airplane powered by hydrogen and fuel cells — a first in history and a step towards cleaner and more energy-efficient aviation, Boeing announced Thursday.
The breakthrough is "full of promises for a greener future," Boeing Chief Technology Officer John Tracy told reporters at the company's research center in Ocana, Spain, where the aircraft was on display.
Given rising fuel costs and concerns about climate change, the air industry is keen to find ways to cut energy bills and emissions tied to global warming. While hydrogen is still expensive to produce as an energy carrier, it emits no pollutants.
