    • Stripper accused of raping best man

A best man, allegedly raped by a stripper with a sex toy, had stepped in for the groom who "wasn't interested" in his bucks' party's strip show, a court has heard.

A witness told the Melbourne Magistrates Court the alleged victim had been egged on by a cheering crowd of up to 30 men to perform with the hired stripper, Linda Maree Naggs, after the groom sat down after spending less than a minute with her.

"All the boys were there wanting a show," he said.

Naggs, 39, has been charged with raping the best man who told police he was sexually penetrated with a vibrator during the party on the Mornington Peninsula last September.

The alleged victim, who cannot be identified, had his pants pulled down to his knees and his top off when Naggs was passed a vibrator by a female assistant, the court heard.

One witness said the best man had looked uncomfortable throughout the performance and was forced on to all fours by Naggs who was naked and wearing a sex toy.

"She went behind him and pulsated to push him to the ground," he said.

The witness said he heard the man scream and get to his feet.

"'Why did you do that for ... you didn't have to do that,'" he said the man yelled.

The court heard the man then pushed Naggs in the chest who retaliated with a right-hook punch but missed and threatened to "come back with my bikie mates".

"She was a little bit hysterical ... she thought she was a boxer," the best man's brother told the court.

He said Naggs had been riding his "very conservative" brother like a dog or a horse before the alleged rape.

"I don't think he could see what was going on. I don't think he knew what was going to happen," the witness said.

The brother denied seeing drugs at the party where two strippers performed and topless waitresses served drinks.

He said the men had been loudly cheering in a "mature way" during Naggs's act that began with her whipping the man next to him in the groin.

The witness said he could not remember Naggs saying she would call the police or being struck in the head in an upstairs bedroom.

The court heard the best man told his brother in the toilet that he was bleeding after the alleged rape.

The court was closed to the media and public while the alleged victim gave evidence for just under two hours.

Biswaden Mitra, from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, said the alleged victim had injuries the day after the bucks' party.

But when shown photographs of the sex toy, Dr Mitra said he could not say if it had caused the minor injury.

The committal hearing before magistrate Elizabeth Lambden to determine whether Naggs, of Rosebud West, should stand trial continues.

One of the more ghastly stories I've read in recent weeks - if not months. No, actually, make that years. Thankfully, one doesn't read this kind of thing too regularly.

"Police say a Forrest City, Arkansas man has been charged with raping his 8 day-old baby."

This is one of the most disgusting things I've heard about in years.

The baby was raped during a visit from the father while other people were in the household
To add to it, he fractured the baby's skull, and the mother is only 15.

    • Helen Mirren -- Rape Isn't Always Criminal

This will raise some eyebrows. Helen Mirren says she's been the victim of date-rape before, but if a woman says no at the last second, don't go whining your way into court.

CNN.com got a copy of a GQ story that's about to be published, in which Mirren calls date-rape a "tricky area," something best worked out between the parties.

Mirren says if a couple is heavy into sexual activity and the woman says "no" at the last second, technically it's rape, but, "I don't think she can have that man into court under those circumstances. I guess it is one of the subtle parts of the men/women relationship that has to be negotiated and worked out between them."

    • Man convicted of savagely raping and slashing woman

A 24-year old Candian man has been convicted of savagely raping and slashing a woman with a butcher blade in a case that made headlines for its barbarity and for the victim's determination to fight back.

It is likely that the rapist, Ryan Huppie, will be locked up indefinitely as a dangerous offender

The victim, now 33, was not in Alberta Court of Queen's Bench in Edmonton yesterday, but in an e-mail she thanked those who helped her heal physically and emotionally.

Mr. Huppie's mother, Suzanne, sat just metres from her son, who listened in a black T-shirt as Mr. Justice Terry Clackson delivered the verdict. "I'm glad it's over and I apologize to the family that are hurting and for Ryan," the mother said later. But she said her son, too, is a victim. He was sexually violated by a relative and again in foster care and now battles substance abuse, she said. "He shouldn't be classified as a dangerous offender. He should be classified as someone who needs help."

The victim was Mr. Huppie's next-door neighbour in a downtown high-rise. She testified that on the night of Feb. 17, 2004, she had trouble falling asleep as he and his friends partied and played loud music. She awoke at 4:30 a.m. to find Mr. Huppie, armed with knives, at the foot of her bed. He told her he was there to rape and kill her so he could win a bet.

She tried to reason with him, but eventually after he raped her and announced again he would kill her, she decided to fight, she told the court. He put her into a headlock, slammed her around like a rag doll and rammed her head into a closet door. He slashed at her with what she called a meat cleaver until blood matted her hair, stained her bed and left her finger bones exposed, bent and dangling by threads of sinew.

She feigned death twice, the second time with her eyes locked on his in a faux death stare as he stood over her in the predawn and tried to decide whether he had finished the job. When he left, she stumbled into the hallway and eventually the embrace of a neighbour and police. Soon after, Mr. Huppie turned himself in.

    • Woman suffers 16 hour sex attack from mental man

A SUFFOLK woman was subjected to a frightening sex attack over a period of 16 hours by a mentally ill Essex man she met on a chat line, it has been alleged.

During her ordeal the 27-year-old single mother was the victim of increasingly bizarre and aggressive behaviour by Andrew Cole who had suffered from mental illness for a number of years, Ipswich Crown Court was told yesterday.

During the 16 hours Cole was in the woman's house in the Lowestoft area he allegedly assaulted her sexually and physically and “trashed” her belongings, said Stephen Dyble, prosecuting.

Cole, 31, of Balantyne Drive, Colchester, has denied rape, assault by penetration, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, assault causing actual bodily harm and common assault.

The court has heard that Cole has admitted criminal damage to the woman's belongings.

Outlining the background to the case Mr Dyble said that Cole and the woman got to know each other on a telephone chat line and over a period of months exchanged telephone calls, text messages and photographs of a sexual nature.

The couple did not meet until February this year, when out of the blue Cole sent the woman a text message asking if he could visit her at her home.

The woman agreed and Cole travelled to the Lowestoft area by taxi, arriving in the early hours of the morning.

The couple had a hot drink and sat chatting and after a while Cole emptied a bag containing medication on the floor and told the woman that he suffered from mental illness.

Within an hour they had consensual sexual intercourse and afterwards Cole had fallen asleep on the sofa.

When he woke up he asked to have a shower and thereafter there was a “marked deterioration” in his behaviour, said Mr Dyble.

“His behaviour became more and more bizarre,” he said.

He alleged that Cole had performed a number of sexual acts on the woman that she did not consent to and had ignored her requests to stop.

He had also urinated on items of her furniture and had become increasingly violent and aggressive resulting in the woman having bruises all over her body. He had also allegedly poured a hot drink over her and smashed a number of her belongings, said Mr Dyble.

He said the woman - who cannot be named for legal reasons - had eventually raised the alarm with a neighbour after Cole started smashing up her house and the police were called.

Mr Dyble said that Cole had suffered from bi-polar manic depression and hyper-mania for a number of years.

He said the prosecution alleged that at the time of the offences he was suffering from a relapse of these conditions but it was not suggested that his illness prevented him from being criminally responsible for what allegedly happened at the woman's home.

      The trial continues today.

    • New rape law to acknowledge Korea's male and trans victims

An opposition MP in South Korea has proposed new legislation that would extend the definition of a rape victim to include men and transsexuals.

Democratic Party Representative Choi Young-hee said that there were more than 1,000 male victims of sex crimes in 2007, up from 468 in 2004.

Under Korean law only women are classed as rape victims.

"The number of male juvenile victims increased to 242 last year from 97 in 2004. We need to devise measures to tackle this trend," she said, according to the Korean Times.

Ms Choi claimed: "15.8% of soldiers in basic training have experienced sexual harassment.

"The bill is also seeking to protect those who change their sex.’’

All young men in the country are obliged to serve in the military or in the riot police for up to two years and have to take a test at the time of enlistment which includes various questions about their sexual orientation.

Gay sex is a serious offence under military codes, and gay men have been regularly viewed as mentally ill and sent to mental institutions.

In 2005, eight soldiers were thrown out of South Korea's military for homosexuality, according to army statistics revealed at the time.

A year later, a soldier attempted suicide several times after telling his superiors he was gay.

The first phase of new military regulations went into effect on April 1st 2006.

They restricted the use of personal information about gay soldiers on military documents, ended the forced medical examinations of gay troops and punished perpetrators of sexuality-based physical or verbal abuse.

Previously those who have "abnormal" sexual identities such as gays, lesbians and bisexual people, were not allowed to serve in the Armed Forces.

There is no mention of homosexuality in the South Korean Constitution or Civil Penal Code.

However, in practice, discrimination against gay people and censorship of gay websites is fairly common.

    • Only one in 14 rapes taken to trial

According to new figures, only one in fourteen reported rapes in Scotland is taken to court.
Statistics reveal that while 922 rapes were reported to police in 2006-7, only 65 of the alleged crimes were prosecuted. Of the 65 cases that were prosecuted, only 27 ended in a guilty plea or verdict – giving Scotland a 2.9 per cent conviction rate, one of the lowest in Europe. The news has triggered calls for a national inquiry into why so many rape cases collapse.

Sandy Brindley, Rape Crisis Scotland co-ordinator, said an independent inquiry was needed to ensure every aspect of the system – from the police to the courts – was no longer failing victims. She said: "A prosecution figure of 7 per cent for rape is extremely low. What this means is the vast majority of rape cases never make it as far as court. No-one can suggest with any credibility that the vast majority of women reporting rape are lying. Rape is a crime which can take a lot of courage to report, and it can come as a shock for women to hear that their case is not being prosecuted."

    • Afghan President Pardons Men Convicted of Gang Rape

The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, has pardoned three men who had been found guilty of gang raping a woman in the northern province of Samangan.

The woman, Sara, and her family found out about the pardon only when they saw the rapists back in their village.

"Everyone was shocked," said Sara's husband, Dilawar, who like many Afghans uses only one name. "These were men who had been sentenced and found guilty by the Supreme Court, walking around freely."

Sara's case highlights concerns about the close relationship between the Afghan president and men accused of war crimes and human rights abuses.

The men were freed discreetly but the rape itself was public and brutal. It took place in September 2005, in the run up to Afghanistan's first democratic parliamentary elections.

The most powerful local commander, Mawlawi Islam, was running for office despite being accused of scores of murders committed while he had been a mujahedeen commander in the 1980s and a Taliban governor in the 1990s, and since the fall of the Taliban in 2001. Sara said one of his sub-commanders and body guards had been looking for young men to help in the election campaign.

"It was evening, around the time for the last prayer, when armed men came and took my son, Islamuddin, by force. I have eyewitness statements from nine people that he was there. From that night until now, my son has never been seen."

Dilawar said his wife publicly harangued the commander twice about their missing son. After the second time, he said, they came for her. "The commander and three of his fighters came and took my wife out of our home and took her to their house about 200 meters away and, in front of these witnesses, raped her."

Dilawar has a sheaf of legal papers, including a doctors' report, which said she had a 17mm wound in her private parts cut with a bayonet. Sara was left to stumble home, bleeding and without her trousers.**continues**

    • Child Brides in Yemen Fight for Their Rights

After months of being raped and beaten by her husband, Nujood Ali decided that enough was enough and took a taxi on her own to a local courthouse in Yemen in order to get a divorce.

She was just 10 years old.

Nujood was the first of three child brides in recent months to obtain a divorce in the hardline Islamic country.

Their stories have sparked a campaign in the country to end the practice of child marriage which is increasingly being seen as the product of poverty and the inability of families to support their own children.

Yemeni women are taken from school at a young age and forced to give birth before their bodies are ready.

The average age of marriage in Yemen's rural areas is 12 to 13, a recent study by Sana University researchers found. The country, at the southern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.

But despite moral outrage against the practice change has been hampered by the role of tradition. Hardliners highlight how the Prophet Mohammad took a bride of nine years old.

Nujood’s story began in February this year when her father took her to the Yemeni capital Sana’a, to be married to 30-year-old Faez Ali Thamer.

At the age of nine, on the first night of her married life, her husband raped her. Later he started to beat her.

Her father, an impoverished street sweeper, had thought it better that she be married early than suffer the same fate as her sisters—being kidnapped in their teens and forcibly married.

Although she complained regularly to her family they said they could do nothing about the marriage as to help her divorce would bring shame to the family. Finally, her uncle advised her to go to court.

It was on April 2 that she walked out onto the street and hailed a taxi. When she arrived at the courtroom proceedings had finished, but instead of sending her back to the abuse she would face at home a shocked judge took her into his house for the evening. Her husband and father were arrested the same evening in order to guarantee that they would appear in court the next day.

Her application for divorce was granted immediately upon her request in the next day’s session.

Since then she has become the figurehead of a growing campaign to ban the practice. Just one month later she was joined by nine-year-old Arwa Abdu Muhammad Ali, whose case came to light after she ran to a local hospital and complained that her husband had beaten and raped her for the last eight months.

Around the same time, a 12-year-old known only as ‘Reem’ managed to secure a divorce from her husband.

A 1992 Yemeni law set the minimum legal age of marriage at 15. But in 1998, the government revised it, allowing girls to be married earlier as long as they did not move in with their husbands until they reached sexual maturity.

Last month the three girls’ return was celebrated at a press conference held by human rights activists and journalists calling for the abolition of child marriage.

“We are celebrating the return of these three girls to their childhood, to their toys, games and smiles,” said lawmaker Abdul Bari Dughaish, a campaigner in government for new laws outlawing the practice. “They were kidnapped and now they are released.”

    • The costs of marital rape in Southern Africa

For years now, women’s groups in Southern Africa have campaigned tirelessly to ensure that the Southern African Development Community adopt the Protocol on Gender and Development. Yesterday, the SADC finally took that historic step. Member states will be obliged to amend their laws to ensure equal rights for women across a wide range of issues, from provisions that require member states to enshrine equality in their constitutions, to firm commitments to reduce maternal mortality by 75 per cent. But while that’s a cause for celebration, the Protocol still does not refer explicitly to domestic violence, and it still doesn’t oblige states to introduce legal provisions that criminalise marital rape.

Women's groups face huge hurdles to make that happen.
While a few SADC countries already have provisions in their legal frameworks to that effect, in a number of other Southern African countries, women’s groups are being told, again and again, by policy makers and traditional leaders, that it would be difficult to convince the “ordinary man on the street” that having sex with his “lawfully wedded” wife can ever be rape, and a crime. SADC leaders, who in the same Protocol make commitments to stepping up HIV prevention and treatment, need to understand that the effects of domestic violence, including marital rape, can seriously undermine any efforts to combat the pandemic.

On the ground, the evidence is plain. When I interviewed women in Zambia last year, it became clear very quickly that victims of domestic violence, including marital rape, are at increased risk of HIV infection and their ability to get effective HIV treatment is drastically undermined. The Zambian women I met told me that domestic violence at the hands of their husbands and intimate partners and their fear of such violence had a direct, harmful impact on their ability to start and continue using HIV treatment.

One woman, who hid her HIV status and medication to avoid violence at the hands of her husband, told me: “Sometimes I miss a dose [of antiretroviral treatment] when my husband comes back at six o’clock, drunk, closes the door and says, ‘Today you are going to freak out.' He locks [me] in, he beats me up and locks me out of the house …. As a result of that I miss doses sometimes. I feel very bad. I don’t even feel like taking the medicine.”

This stark picture shows exactly how a lack of commitment to fighting domestic violence, marital rape and gender inequality could make fighting the HIV pandemic harder – and could cost SADC countries universal access to HIV prevention and treatment. This is why women’s groups must continue to press governments to do more to combat domestic violence, until the idea that marital rape is a contradiction in terms becomes a thing of the past.

    • Woman sentenced to probation on felony child-sex charge

Ashley Thompson, 23-year-old married mother of three from Columbus, Kansas was sentenced to two years of intensive probation. She was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy, who was babysitting her children.

Thompson pleaded guilty in July to a reduced charge of felony attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The plea was part of an agreement with the prosecutor. Oginally she was charged with three felony counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, alleging that she had sex with a 14-year-old child on Feb. 25, March 1 and March 2, 2007, at Thompson’s house in Columbus.

She was also charged in Jasper County with second-degree statutory rape for allegedly having sex with him on March 22 of last year, after he had turned 15, in the back seat of her car on a road near Carl Junction. The charge of statutory rape against Thompson was dismissed because her victim has refused to testify against her. Dismissal allows for refiling of charges in the future if the kid changes his mind. “My son didn’t want to see Mrs. Thompson again,” the victim’s mother said in the Cherokee County courtroom. “He didn’t want to tell the story over and over again.”

The victim’s brother said that he was with his brother March 2 at Thompson’s house in Columbus and that after Thompson returned home from her job that night, the three of them drank alcohol that Thompson had provided them. He said that Thompson went into her bedroom and his brother followed her before long. He said he remained in the living room until he heard sounds coming from the bedroom.

The brother said that when he heard the sounds, he went in to the bedroom, where he saw his brother naked on top of the Thompson having sexual intercourse with her. He said the light was off in the bedroom, but he could see clearly by the light through the open door and the window. • Woman sentenced for raping 13-year-old boy

Joy Christian, 31, from Springfield, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty 08/18 to statutory rape of a 13-year-old boy in accordance with an agreement with the prosecution. She was sentenced to two years of probation.

Christian pleaded guilty under a provision of the law that allows a person to plead guilty even if they do not remember their own actions. Christian, who said she was too drunk to remember any sexual contact with the boy, acknowledged the state had evidence to prove her guilty.

The boy was in Christian's house with a number of other people in November 2006 and both were drinking heavily. After parents noticed that the boy had become withdrawn and more depressed, the boy finally told his parents what had happened.

    • Afghan women jailed for being raped

In Lashkar Gah, the majority of female prisoners are serving 20-year sentences for being forced to have sex. Terri Judd visited them and heard their extraordinary stories.

Two-thirds of the women in Lashkar Gah's medieval-looking jail have been convicted of illegal sexual relations, but most are simply rape victims – mirroring the situation nationwide. The system does not distinguish between those who have been attacked and those who have chosen to run off with a man.

I can't imagine a world where having sex puts you at risk of a 20 year sentence.
