Palin qoutes Reagan
Unbelievable. Sarah Palin finished her closing remarks by quoting Ronald Reagan:
It was Ronald Reagan who said that freedom is always just one generation away from extinction. We don’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream; we have to fight for it and protect it, and then hand it to them so that they shall do the same, or we’re going to find ourselves spending our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children about a time in America, back in the day, when men and women were free.

How has the WAR on DRUGS been doing?
The War on Drugs has become the longest and costliest war in American history. From conservative district court judges to hashish smugglers, from LAPD narcotics officers to the most famous crack kingpin of the 1980's, from actors and doctors to gang members and drug dealers, The Last White Hope casts the Drug War in a new light, one that shows how money, power and greed have corrupted not just dope fiends but an entire government. More importantly, it shows what all of us can do about it!
Directed by Kevin Booth.

'Reagan Coalition' Called Dead On RNC Eve
As Republicans gather in Minnesota for their 2008 national convention, they face a new era in which the so-called Reagan coalition is gone, analysts say.
The broad alliance of social conservatives, small-government activists and pro-military hawks that elected U.S. President Ronald Reagan twice in the 1980s -- and which has mostly held together in the intervening years -- has splintered for good, analysts told McClatchy Newspapers Sunday.
The coalition that elected Reagan is no longer there, William Lacy, a political director in the Reagan White House and now director of the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas, told the news service. He said that in foreign policy, neoconservative interventionists have alienated many Republicans who believe nation-building is a mistake.
Neocons are willing to throw out some of the principles of conservatism, he added.
Lacy also said the dominance of the GOP by Christian conservatives, with their emphasis on legislating against gay marriage and abortion, no longer can mollify with the party's Libertarian wing, which sees any kind of government intrusion into private lives as anathema. As Republicans gather in Minnesota for their 2008 national convention, they face a new era in which the so-called Reagan coalition is ... more -

McCAIN'S KILLING FLOOR
STAGGERING DEATH TOLL
http://www.nowpublic.com/world/staggering-death-toll
VETERANS AGAINST McCAIN * VoteVets(DOT)org is a pro-military organization committed to the destruction of terror networks around the world, with force when necessary. It represents the Voice of America's 21 Century Patriots - those who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. VoteVets(DOT)org is unveiling a national cable ad calling on Senator John McCain to listen to the sovereign government of Iraq, by setting timetables for the redeployment of U.S. forces from the Iraq war.
JOHN McCAIN ADORES WAR BUT IGNORES THE WARRIORS * Everyone knows McCain is a former prisoner of war, but did you know he refuses to support a bipartisan effort to modernize the GI Bill and has voted against nearly every effort to increase funding for healthcare and disability benefits for wounded soldiers? Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) gave him a D+ when they scored his voting record. By Aaron Glantz
THE McCAIN AGENDA : WAR & MORE WAR ! Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain may protest that he hates war, but no American leader has promoted it more avidly. McCain is not only the most hawkish neocon on the horizon; he genuinely sees war as America's most ennobling enterprise. The Militarist By Matthew Yglesias
"BOMB SYRIA" Woolsey advises McCain * Former CIA head James Woolsey heads group of neo-con advisors to John McCain. The GOP's candidate has recruited several members of "The Committee on the Present Danger" as foreign policy advisors, including former CIA head James Woolsey. Do Woolsey's viewpoints represent McCain's vision for America and the world ? You betcha ! Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb us all back to the stone age !
McCAIN : WAY UNDER PAR THEN AS HE IS NOW * Alec Sokolow: 'What do you call the person who graduates fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis? The Republican Party nominee for President. That's right. Senator John McCain actually graduated 894th out of 899 middies at the Naval Academy. Only five other crew cuts achieved less than John McCain did in his class at Annapolis.' 6/4

The cost of empire
In classic economic terms, an economy ought to create enough surplus wealth to grow without resorting to excess borrowing–we ought to be able to live on what we earn. But since 1983, we have been unable to do that. So what differentiates the American economy from the rest of the developed world since 1983? The only rational answer is in the chart below which demonstrates how far beyond any possible rival our military budgets have travelled. The fact that the DOD’s own inventory of worldwide bases is more than 189 pages long cannot lead one to any other conclusion than the American taxpayer is supporting the infrastructure of empire. In classic economic terms, an economy ought to create enough surplus wealth to grow without resorting to excess borrowing–we ought to ... more

Thanks to Ronald Reagan, It is National Ice Cream Month
Sure, July’s most famous holiday is the one celebrating our fine nation’s birth, but let’s not forget one of the month’s other noteworthy events: National Ice Cream Month. In 1984, Ronald Reagan designated the whole month as such, and he also named the third Sunday of July (yesterday) National Ice Cream Day. His proclamation called for people to observe these with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” I neglected to eat any ice cream yesterday, but in the last 10 days of the month, I plan to give ice cream a proper celebration. Sure, July’s most famous holiday is the one celebrating our fine nation’s birth, but let’s not forget one of the month’s other notewor... more

Did jokes defeat Communism?
Poor Mr Gorbachev. Every time he met Ronald Reagan at a summit, he was subjected by the American President to a stream of Russian jokes. Or rather, to be precise, Soviet jokes - the point of which was always to satirise some aspect of life under communism.

Reports find racial gap in drug arrests
"More than two decades after President Ronald Reagan escalated the war on drugs, arrests for drug sales or, more often, drug possession are still rising. And despite public debate and limited efforts to reduce them, large disparities persist in the rate at which blacks and whites are arrested and imprisoned for drug offenses, even though the two races use illegal drugs at roughly equal rates." Ronald Reagan told the Associated Press that a Secret Service agent shot him when he landed on him in the limousine, while appearing to pose as a cover against John Hinckley's gunfire. After recovering from the shooting, Reagan became a passive President, while behind closed doors, George Bush ran the Oval office.Hinkley's brother was scheduled to have lunch with Neil Bush that following day after the shooting.

A Voice Speaks From Beyond The Grave...
(Via my email inbox)
Here is is an actual quote that Reagan wrote about George 'W' in his diaries, recently edited by author Doug Brinkley and published by Harper Collins:
'A moment I've been dreading.
George brought his n'er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida; the one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job.
Maybe I'll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they'll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work.'
