J K Rowling speaking at Harvard Commencement
I wasn't a J.K Rowling fan, until now. I may never read a word or watch one second of any Harry Potter but Video of J K Rowling's Commencement Address, “The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination,” is powerful and moving.
Given at the Annual Meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association on June 5th 2008. In this wise, yet also funny speech she talks about her time working for Amnesty International, her personal experiences with failure and the power of the imagination to allow us to empathize with others. Muggle's magic model
An Iowa man has built an unbelievably detailed scale model of Harry Potter's Hogwarts school - out of 602,000 matchsticks.
Pat Acton, 55, of Gladbrook, took more than two years to complete the model which features all the turrets, walkways and towers seen in the films.
"I love the books and consider myself a Harry Potter fan," he said.
Pat has spent more than 30 years creating amazing sculptures from wooden sticks. He started because he wanted to take up woodworking but couldn't afford the tools.
After finding a box of wooden kitchen matches at his local store he began to experiment and soon knocked up a church using 500 matchsticks.
He is now working on a stunning scale model of the Minas Tirith fortified city as seen in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
Pat, who works as a careers advisor at a local community college, said: "The Minas Tirith model will contain hundreds of city buildings," explains Pat. "It will also be topped with the Tree of Gondor and the White Tower of Etchelion.
"The dimensions on it will be roughly 10 feet long and about nine feet wide. The great tower is seven feet tall."

Harry Potter actor stabbed to death outside UK club
"A British teenage actor playing a minor role in the upcoming "Harry Potter" film was stabbed to death during a brawl in London on Saturday, police said.
Rob Knox, 18, was stabbed after he got caught up in a fight outside a bar in southwest London early Saturday, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
Knox plays Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby in the upcoming film "Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment of the popular series set for release in November." "Harry Potter" Actor Dies Suddenly In A Knife Fight
Rob Knox who is in the next Harry Potter movie was killed Saturday in a knife fight.
18-year-old Rob Knox died early Saturday morning after being shivved outside a bar in southwest London, say coppers, when he tried to defend his little brother over a missing cell phone. Knox was to play Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby in “Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince” which was slated for release in November.
Warner Bros. said it was “shocked” by the news. A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, but no further details are yet available.

Harry Potter actor stabbed to death protecting his younger brother
A teenage actor who appears in the next Harry Potter film was stabbed to death trying to protect his younger brother from a knifeman yesterday.
Robert Knox, 18, who acted alongside Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, became the 28th teenager killed in Britain this year, and the 10th in London to die from stab wounds.
Relatives said his role as Marcus Belby in the film, due for release in November, was set to launch his career as an actor.
Mr Knox was a member of the same rugby club as Jimmy Mizen, the 16-year-old "gentle giant" fatally stabbed in nearby Lee, south-east London, two weeks ago.
In a statement, Rob's parents, Sally and Colin Knox, said: "Rob was kind and thoughtful and would always help out others – he would always spend his last penny on other people instead of himself. The life and soul of the party, he was very outgoing, loved sports, and would always strike up a conversation with people.
"He was respectful to others and adored by all his family and friends. He was an asset to the family."
The murder will reignite a debate about youth crime, knives, and whether the criminal justice system is working. Figures obtained by The Telegraph show that out of more than 60,000 people prosecuted for possessing knives since 1997, only nine have been given the maximum jail term.
The Home Office and Boris Johnson, the new Mayor of London, have introduced measures including police stop-and-search and knife scanners at schools, pubs and clubs, in an attempt to curb their use. Yet the Children's Commissioner for England claimed yesterday that such measures could fuel resentment.
Sir Al Aynsley-Green called the increased police powers "contentious" and told the BBC: "There is a balance here. On the one hand for young people to feel safer by having the presence of the police – but on the other hand making sure the new powers don't create further antagonism by increased stopping and searching."
Mr Knox, a grammar school boy, is understood to have been fatally stabbed after trying to save his 16-year-old brother, Jamie, from a man armed with two knives.
The man began attacking drinkers outside the Metro bar, next to Sidcup railway station, south-east London. Witnesses said that the attacker had earlier been thrown out by bouncers, but returned in the early hours with several friends.
Tarik Ozresberoglu, 17, a trainee steel worker, described how he tried to stem the flow of blood from Mr Knox's wounds then rugby-tackled the attacker into submission. Harry Potter Bible Camp?
Today, I passed a church with a sign advertising a Harry Potter themed bible camp, which seems almost as strange as Pope Benedict's exorcist calling Harry Potter 'the king of darkness'. What do you think?

"Summer Bible Camp for Grades 1-6
Wizards and Wonders - A Hero's Journey with Harry Potter
Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Church 2008 Summer Camp, Wizards and Wonders, is an incredibly fun and thought provoking experience for students Grades 1 through 6, using the Harry Potter books and movies as a way to help children connect with Biblical themes.
So why use Harry Potter to help students connect with the Bible? The Harry Potter books and movies have captured the imagination of old and young alike. The stories are ones of wizards, magic spells, and a young boy on a journey to find out just exactly who he is. They are popular because J. Rowling uses objects and experiences, that while seemingly fantastical, are ones people can relate to and understand.
This is not unlike two thousand years ago when Jesus taught the public through parable, metaphor, and simile. He was trying to help simple people grasp vast and impossible ideas such as God, heaven, and grace. He did so by relating them to things and experiences people understood. God delights in any path that leads people to him, even if it is tales of lonely but courageous orphan boys, silly spells, school friendships and loyalties, magic and evil wizards.
At first glance, Harry Potter seems an unlikely hero. But all through the Bible we see God calling the most seemingly unqualified candidates to do His work. Like Harry Potter, for example, Moses does not know his origins, but although reluctant at first, both accept the call to transformation for themselves and their community. " Today, I passed a church with a sign advertising a Harry Potter themed bible camp, which seems almost as strange as Pope Benedict's ex... more -

Harry Potter author sues her biggest fan
It's a battle worthy of Harry Potter himself. His creator, author J.K. Rowling, is locked in a courtroom fight not with an evil wizard but with one of her biggest fans, a former librarian from Michigan named Steven Vander Ark.
Rowling is suing to stop the publication of the "Harry Potter Lexicon," an encyclopedia authored by Voldemort -- I mean, Vander Ark -- that Rowling claims is a wholesale theft of her work.
The encyclopedia is an offshoot of Vander Ark's long-popular fan Web site, which details the world of Harry Potter, replete with magic spells, potions and quidditch rules. Even Rowling has admitted that she was a fan of the site. It's a battle worthy of Harry Potter himself. His creator, author J.K. Harry Potter creator considered suicide
Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has revealed she thought of killing herself while penniless and suffering from depression as a single mother, according to a report in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper.
At the time, Rowling had separated from her first husband and was living in a cramped apartment with her baby daughter.
She was able to afford the rent only after a friend paid the £600 ($1,189) that she needed, the newspaper quoted her as telling a student reporter at Edinburgh University.
"We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking 'I'm a little bit miserable,'" Rowling said.
