Motori di Ricerca Semantici: il Nuovo Ask.com
La nuova versione del motore di ricerca Ask.com presenta nuove funzioni nel campo delle ricerche espresse in linguaggio naturale: l’obiettivo è di fornire non solo link, ma le risposte stesse nella pagine dei risultati grazie alle tecnologie sviluppate per il Web Semantico.
I siti indicizzati sono aumentati, è aumentato il materiale indicizzato per ogni sito e sono state rielaborate le priorità per produrre le SERP.
Ask nel campo delle ricerche online gode apparentemente di una buona posizione: è stimato quarto o quinto nel mondo (a seconda delle fonti). Il problema è che questo non significa automaticamente una quota alta sul mercato, che infatti oscilla tra il 4 e il 7% del totale.

Web Semantico e Knowledge Networking su Twine.com
Twine è un sistema evoluto di social bookmarking che imposta la catalogazione dei contenuti basandosi sul tagging degli utenti.
Viene anche definito come un’applicazione di “knowledge networking“, ossia di condivisione della conoscenza sul Web: i riferimenti sono quelli del Web Semantico e dell’Intelligenza Collettiva.
I “twine” possono essere definiti come reti sociali di interesse, ovvero informazioni organizzate condivisibili e collaborative.
La parte semantica del sistema risiede nella mappatura della sua ontologia tramite gli standard RDF e OWL.
Una funzione interessante è anche il bookmarklet che ti permette di installare il pulsante di Twine nel browser per postare contenuti web di qualsiasi tipo (documenti testuali, files PDF, immagini, audio, video, emails, bookmarks, feeds RSS, ecc).
Inoltre ad ogni utente registrato viene affidato un indirizzo di posta elettronica per facilitare l’inserimento di nuovi link anche via email, sfruttando l’indirizzo che ti viene assegnato da Twine. Fuzzzy.com è un sistema per il social bookmarking piuttosto innovativo, che vanta alcune soluzioni molto interessanti per il tagging semantico.
Il sistema per classificare i contenuti web su Fuzzzy (sì, con tre zeta… altrimenti non sarebbe fuzzzzzy) è una via di mezzo tra l’approccio top-down delle tassonomie, come per la classica directory di Yahoo!, e il nuovo tagging sociale delle folksonomie alla Del.icio.us. Social Media: Ontologie e Folksonomie
Con folksonomia sui social media si intende la classificazione mediante tagging dei contenuti web; si tratta in un certo senso di complementi bottom-up alle tecnologie semantiche formali, in quanto si possono definire tecnicamente “emergenti” nel senso che vengono generate dalla collaborazione spontanea all’interno delle community, come in del.icio.us.
La riluttanza di molti utenti a creare metadati di questo a altri tipi causa quell’overload di informazione non catalogata che diventa frustrante per chi fa quotidianamente ricerche online.
Tutto questo ha a che fare naturalmente con il web semantico, e qui entrano in gioco le ontologie che possono essere considerate il versante opposto sullo spettro del processo di creazione di categorie.

Sviluppo Web: Strutture a Grafi e Serendipity
Le aspettative per l’Intelligenza Artificiale old school erano troppo alte, ma oggi abbiamo in effetti tecnologie per l’apprendimento delle macchine (”machine learning”) e modelli per la rappresentazione dei dati che aiutano gli utenti a scoprire relazioni che non avrebbero probabilmente mai scoperto.
Idealmente è questo il compito che dovrebbe svolgere il software: aiutarti a scoprire informazioni latenti pronte per essere attivate. Il sistema non dovrà però mettere TE in una posizione di dipendenza rispetto al software, e soprattutto le raccomandazioni fornite dal sistema non devono essere di impedimento.

Computer AI works towards shattering language barrier
The Internet got smarter this week with the release of a semantic map that teaches computers the meanings behind words -- and gives the machines a vocabulary far larger than that of a typical US college graduate.
Cognition Technologies began licensing the map Tuesday to software creators interested in having programs "understand" words based on tenses and sentence context -- in much the same way as the human brain does.
"We have taught the computer virtually all the meanings of words and phrases in the English language," Cognition chief executive Scott Jarus told AFP.
"This is clearly a building block for Web 3.0, or what is known as the Semantic Web. It has taken 30 years; it is a labor of love," Jarus said.
The semantic map is reportedly the world's largest, and gives computers a vocabulary more than 10 times as extensive as that of a typical US college graduate.
The coming third generation of life online is predicted to feature intuitive artificial intelligence applications that work swiftly across broadband Internet connections.
When applied to Internet searches, semantic technology delivers results oriented to what people seem to be seeking instead of simply matching words used to online content.
For example, a semantic online search for "melancholy songs with birds" would know to link sadness in lyrics with various species of birds.
Cognition's semantic map is already used in a LexisNexis Concordance "e-discovery" software to sift through documents amassed during evidence phases of trials.
"We help them find the needle in a haystack," Jarus said.
"It used to be boxes and boxes of paper and now 80 percent of it is digital. Lawyers can search for a smoking gun within that discovery material."
Cognition's Caselaw program uses the technology to mine more than a half-century of US federal court decisions for legal precedents, according to the company.
The semantic map is also employed in a widely-used medical database.
Cognition says it has also "semantically enabled" globally popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
A Web 3.0 target is to develop artificial intelligence "agents" that mine mountains of information on the Internet for material that suit the interests of the people they serve.
"It would be a software application constantly looking for things you might be interested in while accurately understanding the concepts of what you are looking for," Jarus said.
He described it as "artificial intelligence agents working for you on a push basis instead of a pull basis."

Virtual-Reality Multimedia Cocoon Being Designed by NAU
"You've got display, sound and interaction all combined to create this fully immersed digital experience," explains Tino Schaedler, the architect-turned-film designer who is one third of NAU.
"It is completely different from me sitting in front of a screen, looking at a little picture and typing something in -- almost like the experience is reduced to my brain and my fingers. In the Cocoon we have the whole body immersed inside."
If that sounds like science fiction, it may be because the 3D motion-tracking system was originally developed by John Underkoffler, whose work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology inspired similar 'reach out and grab' technology in the sci-fi movie "Minority Report."
NAU sees the technology as part of a trend away from traditional interfaces towards more intuitive ways of interacting with technology, a trend they say has already begun with existing mainstream devices such as the motion-sensitive controls of Nintendo's Wii gaming system or the touch-sensitive display on the iPhone.
Schaedler says the Cocoon could re-shape our working environments, allowing home working and virtual meetings where you could talk with virtual versions of your co-workers in detailed virtual environments. The future of the desktop
Everything is moving to the cloud. As we enter the third decade of the Web we are seeing an increasing shift from native desktop applications towards Web-hosted clones that run in browsers. For example, a range of products such as Microsoft Office Live, Google Docs, Zoho, ThinkFree, DabbleDB, Basecamp, and many others now provide Web-based alternatives to the full range of familiar desktop office productivity apps. The same is true for an increasing range of enterprise applications, led by companies such as Salesforce.com, and this process seems to be accelerating. In addition, hosted remote storage for individuals and enterprises of all sizes is now widely available and inexpensive. As these trends continue, what will happen to the desktop and where will it live?

Parallax semantic web browser actually understands what you want
Staff researcher David François Huynh has created an interesting tool for browsing semantic database Freebase, called Freebase Parallax. Written up by ZDNet's Oliver Marks, the video Huynh recorded demonstrating Parallax will knock your socks off. The idea is to allow you to apply multiple filters for your searches and embed live charts in a blog. It's a beautiful idea, check out the video.
This ought to work. Freebase has taken more than $50 million in venture investments, they have a small army of volunteer and computer scientist contributors, they've got robots pumping their database with information automatically. There are now 60% more articles in Freebase than there are in English Wikipedia.

I più esperti di computer science sono cauti sul futuro del Web Semantico: ma sono anche ottimistici sul fatto che sarà una risorsa per tutta la conoscenza creata dall’umanità nel corso della storia.
Gli ingegneri di tutto il mondo lavorano a un progetto interdisciplinare che va sotto il nome di rete semantica, che in teoria dovrebbe rivoluzionare la natura stessa di Internet.
“L’obbiettivo è di reperire le informazioni non tramite semplici keyword, vedi Google, ma tramite descrizioni delle capacità e potenzialità delle risorse che cerchiamo.”, ha dichiarato Jerry Hobbs.
Il progetto DARPA del Pentagono (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency), tra i fondatori di ciò che oggi chiamiamo il Web, sta stanziando fondi per la ricerca.
Anche Tim Berners-Lee fa parte del progetto.

Google simulerà il pensiero umano
Sono molte le ricette al mondo protette da rigorosi segreti industriali, tesi a rendere unico e riconoscibile il gusto di una bibita, di un panino o di una porzione di pollo fritto. La filosofia cambia di poco se dal gustoso panorama dei cibi ci si sposta nell'asettico e tecnologico mondo dell'informatica. Carpire i segreti dei grandi colossi dell'era digitale non è certo semplice, specie se si basano su un numero considerevole di variabili. In questo senso, l'algoritmo del motore di ricerca Google sembra essere uno dei segreti industriali meglio custoditi del Pianeta. Eppure, talvolta, qualche dettaglio emerge ugualmente.
Nel corso di una conferenza, infatti, uno dei principali responsabili del settore ricerche di Google, Udi Manber, ha rivelato qualche dettaglio sul motore di ricerca che, più di tutti, fa muovere il Web ormai da numerosi anni. Interessati a implementare costantemente i loro sistemi, gli sviluppatori di Mountain View lavorano con un unico ideale in mente, ben riassunto da Manber: «Idealmente, ci piacerebbe capire le vostre domande, comprendere tutta la conoscenza e poi unire le due cose». Naturalmente, l'ambizioso obiettivo prospettato da Manber non è ancora raggiungibile con gli attuali sistemi, quindi Google deve per forza analizzare e catalogare il maggior numero possibile di contenuti sul Web, trasformare una semplice chiave di ricerca in un'area semantica su cui lavorare e infine fornire un elenco di risultati, il più pertinenti possibile, all'utente. Web 3.0 = Noise Reduction?
I've joked about this before, but based on the growing forms of social interaction in the 2.0 space the need for a clear, all in one solution to social aggregation seems like a logical direction.
And to think many believed Web 3.0 to be mobile-based. Is it still to early to tell? It used to be that social networks cropped up and withered based on predominate adoption, however now it appears that adoption rates are much higher (look at the Twitter/Friendfeed situation). Argh! The internet's alive and breeding!
'Living' web sites that 'grow, develop and evolve to suit the taste of the people that read them' are making their way onto the net.
Using new technology, web sites can update themselves and change design, functionality and content depending on the latest fads and tastes. And somewhat ominously (for conspiracy theorists but brilliantly for web geeks) they can evolve faster that they would if humans had their hands on the controls.
The revolutionary software is already in place on a website (creativesynthesis.net) that alters colours, fonts and hyperlinks in response to what people respond to and click on the page.
According to the team behind the project, the morphings are a two-way influence between the user and the site, not just a mirror of human behaviour.
“The mutations will always occur and while they are responsive to human attention, they are not bound by them. Japan working to replace the Internet
"Apparently, Japan's minister of communications has big plans for the current iteration of the internet -- namely, to stamp it out of existence by 2020. According to reports, Yoshihide Suga -- the country's communications minister -- has announced that the Japanese government is hard at work on a newer, faster, stronger, and generally better looking internet. According to Suga, the new network will deliver more reliable data transfers at higher speeds, be more resistant to viruses and crashes, and will be 60 percent more charming.
