    • How to say I Luv U in Nigeria

Your mobile phone beeps, you have received a text message.

It begins: "I swear, I will make sure I give you HIV..."

But it's not an abusive threat, it's a "romantic" text message copied from a book on sale all over Nigeria that professes to give young people the words they need to court the woman or man of their dreams.

"H is for Happiness and joy forever with an I: Incomparable love that will never V: Vanish until death do us part. I love you," the message concludes.

The book, called "Touching the heart through unforgettable text messages (vol.2)" is one of several on sale in markets around the country that give suggestions to tongue-tied young lovers.

      Nigerians are compulsive text senders.

Many men complain that women send them "hot" text messages, but all they really want is money, while women say they are pestered by men sending "romantic" texts when all their suitors really want is sex.

But the book's author, 33-year-old entrepreneur Femi Emmanuel, says he writes text messages for people who are too busy, or illiterate, to properly express what is in their hearts.

He is not married but says he send "special" text messages to his girlfriend - original ones, not out of his books.

The sale of all four volumes has been such a success he has bought a car with the proceeds.

"People have really embraced the mobile phone here in Nigeria, but they may not be smart enough to know what to say in these kind of situations, or maybe they're too busy, running an office or whatever," he said.

Too busy to deal with the loss of a loved one? A Madrid mortuary understands that some people are just too busy to attend funerals and deal with death in general, and so it has set up a service to allow customers to offer condolences... via text message. Nothing says sympathy like "2 bad 4 ur dad xoxo".

    • SMS for a cab in the city of Dubai

There is good news for those loitering around here waiting for a taxi.

      'SMS' away.

The local Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced taxi stand (rank) numbers, modeled on the Singapore taxi service system, for different locations. The passenger could send an SMS to a toll-free number 4774 mentioning the number of the taxi stand where he or she is waiting.

The step has been taken because most taxi drivers used to face difficulty in tracking down the locations of the passengers, ultimately resulting in long and frustrating waiting, the Khaleej Times said.

Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO of Dubai Taxi, told the newspaper the authority has given rank numbers to 54 locations or taxi stands in various congested areas of the emirate.

"Every stand will have an area code. Once a passenger sends SMS, he would receive an acknowledgement message from the RTA and a taxi would pick the passenger up from the exact spot within minutes," he said. Altogether, 54 areas have been earmarked as taxi stands in the emirate.

Each stand will have an information board listing the rank numbers and respective areas, the SMS number and the toll-free booking numbers of all taxi companies operating in the emirate.

Dubai Taxi has 3,906 taxis in its fleet; the total number of cabs with the other four franchise companies is around 7,000. Around 1,200 more taxis are expected to be on Dubai roads by year-end and another 1,000 by 2009.

    • Space scientist says texting is four times more expensive than receiving scientifi...

"A University of Leicester space scientist has worked out that sending texts via mobile phones works out to be far more expensive than downloading data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr Nigel Bannister’s calculations were used for the Channel 4 Dispatches programme “The Mobile Phone Rip-Off”.

He worked out the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble – and compared that with the 5p cost of sending a text.

He said: “The bottom line is texting is at least 4 times more expensive than transmitting data from Hubble, and is likely to be substantially more than that.

“The maximum size for a text message is 160 characters, which takes 140 bytes because there are only 7 bits per character in the text messaging system, and we assume the average price for a text message is 5p. There are 1,048,576 bytes in a megabyte, so that's 1 million/140 = 7490 text messages to transmit one megabyte. At 5p each, that's £374.49 per MB - or about 4.4 times more expensive than the ‘most pessimistic’ estimate for Hubble Space Telescope transmission costs.”

Dr Bannister said it had been difficult to work out exactly how much Hubble data transmission costs. So he contacted NASA who gave him a firm figure of £8.85 per megabyte (MB) for the transmission of data from HST to the Earth.

“This doesn't include the cost of the ground stations and the time of the personnel along the way, but it is an unambiguous number for that part of the process. So that's £8.85 to get each MB from Hubble, to the first point of contact on the ground, but no further. Hence we need to go a little bit further to estimate exactly how much it costs to transmit data from Hubble to the end user - i.e. to the data archive which scientists can access. This is difficult, so I had to make some conservative assumptions.”

Dr Bannister estimated the cost of the data from Hubble could vary between £8.85 and £85 per MB- much cheaper than the £374.49 per MB cost of transmitting one MB of text.

He concludes: “Hubble is by no means a cheap mission – but the mobile phone text costs were pretty astronomical!” "

    • Dead Woman Buried With Cellphone Allegedly Sends Texts to Husband

A grieving widower claims to have been receiving calls and text messages from beyond the grave. Frank Jones, whose wife Sadie died five years ago, says he has been plagued by SMS messages and missed calls since she was buried—her beloved cellphone in the coffin beside her.

The weirdest part of all of this is that 20 years ago, when Frank and his family moved into their house in the British resort town of Blackpool, they were plagued by paranormal behavior. Doors were slammed, bedclothes pulled off the kids while they slept, taps were turned on—and all this was put down to a malevolent presence called "The Thing."
