    • Police Wnt U To Fight Crime W/Txt Msgs

Police in the 1970s urged citizens to "drop a dime" in a pay phone to report crimes anonymously. Now in an increasing number of cities, tipsters are being invited to use their thumbs _ to identify criminals using text messages.

Police hope the idea helps recruit teens and 20-somethings who wouldn't normally dial a Crime Stoppers hot line to share information with authorities.

"If somebody hears Johnny is going to bring a gun to school, hopefully they'll text that in," said Sgt. Brian Bernardi of the Louisville, Ky., Metro Police Department, which rolled out its text-message tip line in June.

LOL, OMG and TTYL: parents and teachers worry that teenagers' use of these and other forms of online shorthand is harming their language skills. Perhaps they will take comfort from a study suggesting that instant messaging (IM) actually represents "an expansive new linguistic renaissance." • The Pope goes digital

"Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile phones during World Youth Day in Sydney in July, hoping going digital will help him connect better with a younger audience.

The Pope will text daily messages of inspiration and hope during the six-day Sydney event while digital prayer walls will be erected at event sites and the church will set up a Catholic social networking Web site akin to a Catholic Facebook.

The Catholic Church said it decided to use technology to connect to the estimated 225,000 young Catholics expected to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations that start on July 15.

"We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," Bishop Anthony Fisher said in a statement on Wednesday.

Australian telecoms firm Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services for the event, as well as erect digital prayer walls at event sites. Telstra said it plans to connect 8,000 volunteers, 2,000 clergy, 3,000 media and an anticipated 225,000 pilgrims to more than 700 locations around Sydney."

"But online slang in regular schoolwork still irks educators"
      are kids stupid these days??

"A study released Thursday confirmed what teachers, parents and academics have long suspected: All that instant messaging and texting that teenagers do is creeping into schoolwork. In fact, 64 percent of youngsters ages 12 to 17 have used emoticons, text shortcuts and informal language in school assignments, the survey found.

But as the teens in the imagined conversation above might say, it's really NBD: no big deal."

    • Chelsea and the "Monica" question. + Chronic Texting?

I am supporting Obama, but I believe the questions being thrown at Chelsea about Bill Clinton's affair are unfair. However, I don't think Chelsea knows how to put the question to bed (no pun intended, well maybe a little pun was intended but not a big pun). So, I am offering Chelsea a little advice...and....

....Remember when we use to use phones to talk to people? No more. Texting has taken over and I suppose not even the occasional unwanted obscene phone call will survive. Personally, I am annoyed.

The weirdest part of all of this is that 20 years ago, when Frank and his family moved into their house in the British resort town of Blackpool, they were plagued by paranormal behavior. Doors were slammed, bedclothes pulled off the kids while they slept, taps were turned on—and all this was put down to a malevolent presence called "The Thing."

    • Are your text messages private?

Just like email, communicating via text message can feel like a one-on-one exchange—but that privacy is an illusion. Yahoo Tech's Gina Hughes runs down a few ways you can protect your privacy with SMS, like passwording your phone, using anonymous SMS services like AnonTxt.com, and completely destroying your cell phone's data before your sell your phone. All of these suggestions don't actually make SMS secure, because the transmission itself is not, and the copy of your message, in the end, is stored on someone else's phone and there's no way to control what happens from there. In short, the best way to protect yourself is to not text sensitive info, like passwords, PINs, or, um, flirtations you wouldn't mind others knowing about. • The secret language of predictive text. Zonino!

Slang is so last century. Now kids are inventing a whole new language to confuse the hell out of adults. It's based entirely on the predictive text function on mobile phones, replacing the words they mean with the first alternative that their phones come up with. But now, instead of being completely illogical like slang words from the past (like 'gnarly' and 'sick' and 'rad' which I hope will never die) this new language can actually be deciphered... if you really want to sit down and try to figure it out.

Accordingly, my name in this secret language is baby. So, Baby goin good 2 hav adds w my book any, gongu!

Here's a glossary for some of the words:

Got any other words for this language?

    • ChaCha is Money

A revolution in mobile search. ChaCha is what we have been waiting for with
regards to text for information. Text a question to ChaCha (242242) and
ChaCha will send you the answer. Sounds familiar but what sets ChaCha apart
is that they use search engines combined with actual human beings (they call
them guides) to answer your questions. Which makes this Q&A process
exponentially more powerful. You don't need to format your question in
certain ways, go through a system of clarifications, etc. You can type
things like "When does MoMo's close in San Fran today?" or "How many points
did Kevin Love have last night against Stanford?" etc. and get
straight-forward answers. Whereas googletext wouldn't recognize "San Fran"
and probably would be unable to extract data like closing times. I gave up google text after being frustrated by responses such as "Do you mean San Francisco, North Dakota". ChaCha isn't instant (couple minutes response time) but it is accurate.

Test it out, it actually works and may still be free.

It's not that she doesn't want to come to your party, it's just that she never got your text. This NYE, cell companies are readying to be swamped with an increase in text messages as more users than ever will be firing messages of "Happy New Year" and "Why haven't you returned my TEXT!?!?!?"

So expect delays and don't get mad when your friends don't hit you back right away. Emails and instant messages over internet connected devices will be the better bet.

    • Text-Offender Sends Naked Man To Random House For Sex

Now, I've heard of ordering pizzas and sending them to a random house as a prank. But this guy received an alluring text message offering more than just company from two young ladies.
"They invited him around for some close attention, helpfully suggesting he get his gear off to save time. So off he went, reached the house, and threw his clothes through the front window prior to entering."
Uhm... but it was all a joke. And the lucky lady who opened the door to find this naked man on her front step called the police and he was arrested. My question is why he would actually fall for something like that??

    • "Exciting" new toy for adults

She seems happy to get that call. Perhaps she just bought the new bluetooth-enabled vibrator?

Yes, I said a bluetooth-enabled vibrator. The makers describe this, er, toy "as a high-tech vibrating device". Just get your partner to send you a text and, er, well, if you don't know what happens next then you probably shouldn't be reading this.

"It took two years to develop this kind of technology, and it's compatible with many phone models including Nokia, Motorola, Panasonic, and Sony Ericsson." Sorry LG users. ('',)

Text messaging is pretty "book" (that is T9word for "cool") in the UK.

In September, more than 4,000 texts were sent every second. Text usage is 25% higher than last year.

"How did we manage before text someone asks? Quite easily old chap - we just got on with life without the need to communicate every few minutes. So peaceful." - Sue Woollard
