    • Iraqi girl aborts suicide bombing

A teenage Iraqi girl wearing a vest packed with explosives turned herself in rather than go through with a suicide bombing in a violence-torn city north of Baghdad, police and the U.S. military said.

A U.S. military statement said the girl surrendered to police on Sunday in Baquba, capital of Iraq's restive Diyala province, where Sunni Arab al Qaeda militants are waging war on U.S. and Iraqi forces.

    • Female suicide bombers kill dozens of Iraqi pilgrims

About 40 people have been killed and almost 150 injured in a series of suicide bomb attacks in Iraq in one of the bloodiest days the country has seen for months.

Three female suicide bombers struck in Baghdad as thousands of Shia Muslim pilgrims flooded into the city. The blasts killed at least 28 people and wounded 92, local police were quoted as saying by Reuters.

In the northern city of Kirkuk a suicide bomber attacked a rally held to protest at a law on provincial elections. Up to 11 people were killed and 54 injured.

Sunni Islamists connected to al-Qaida are thought to be behind the attack. Insurgents, particularly those linked to al-Qaida, have increasingly used female bombers as they are better able to evade security precautions.

Yesterday, seven Shia Muslim pilgrims were shot dead in southern Baghdad as they made their way to the holy site on foot.

Female suicide bombers have carried out more than 20 attacks this year and a team of Iraqi female guards has been deployed around Kadhamiya specifically to search suspects.

Does the idea of female suicide bombers shock you? Or is gender irrelevant in situtations like these?

    • Suicide Bombers Kill 35 Iraqi Recruits

Two suicide bombers posing as army recruits struck an Iraqi base just east of Baquba on Tuesday morning, killing at least 35 Iraqi recruits and wounding 63, according to the Iraqi police and medical officials in Diyala Province.

The attack came as Iraqi troops prepared for what their commanders predict will be a challenging fight to try to reclaim large areas of Diyala that remain sanctuaries for Salafist jihadist fighters and other antigovernment guerrillas.

The bombers, wearing belts packed with explosives, waded into a crowd of more than 200 recruits just after 8 a.m. and detonated about 30 seconds apart in front of the headquarters of an Iraqi brigade where the recruits had gathered. The attack happened at the Saad military base, which is about four miles east of Baquba, the provincial capital.

    • 41 dead in Kabul bombing

41 people have been killed and 141 injured after a suicide bomber drove a car into the Indian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Most of the victims were civilians; either those queuing for visas (presumably to safer countries) or those working in the blast zone.

In Afganistan, suicide bombings have been becoming worryingly more frequent, with foreigners commonly being targeted. The Taliban have denied responsibility for the atrocity.

    • Bomb at Indian embassy kills 41 in Afghanistan

A suicide car bomber rammed two diplomatic vehicles entering the Indian Embassy in Kabul on Monday, killing 41 people and wounding 141, Afghan authorities said.

The Taliban have vowed to step up their campaign of suicide bombings this year, graphically demonstrating that despite the increase in foreign troops in Afghanistan and more trained Afghan forces on patrol, the militants are far from defeated.

"I saw wounded and dead people everywhere on the road," said Danish Karokhil, the head of the independent Pajhwok news agency, whose offices are close by.

"The target was the diplomatic vehicles. They were trying to get inside the embassy when the suicide car bomber attacked them," he said.

Health Ministry spokesman Abdullah Fahim said 28 people were killed and 141 wounded, but a senior police official later revised this to 41 dead..

    • At least 38 killed in Iraq bombings:100 wounded

At least 38 people were killed in two massive bomb attacks in Iraq Thursday, 20 of them dying at the hands of a suicide bomber as they held an anti-Qaeda meet, officials said.

The bomber blew himself up in a municipal office in western Iraq's Anbar province, killing the local mayor and at least 19 senior members of an anti-Qaeda front, according to Iraqi officials.

The attack, in which more than 20 people were also wounded, took place in the town of Garma, near the former Sunni rebel bastion of Fallujah, the Fallujah town council spokesman Kamal al-Ayash told AFP.

Ayash said the bomber detonated his explosive vest in the office of mayor Kamal al-Abdali as he was huddled in a meeting with members of an anti-Qaeda "Awakening" group around noon (0900 GMT).

"Abdali was one of those killed in the attack," Ayash said.

A security official in the defence ministry confirmed that at least 20 people were killed and 20 more were wounded in the attack.

The bombing marked the second attack on a municipal office in Iraq this week.

On Tuesday, the office of the district advisory council of Baghdad's Shiite enclave of Sadr City was bombed in an attack which killed four Americans -- two soldiers and two civilian employees.

The violence in Garma came just days before Anbar province, once a hotbed of Sunni militancy, was due to be transferred by the US military to the control of Iraqi security forces.

The country's largest province was the epicentre of a brutal Sunni Arab-led fight against the US military after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.

In the early years of the insurgency, US forces fought raging battles in the province, especially in the capital Ramadi and in Fallujah.

Fallujah became a symbol of the ultra-violent insurgency before it was virtually razed to the ground in November 2004 by a US military assault launched to seize control of the city.

The violence Anbar began to ebb in late 2006 when local Sunni tribes, weary of Al-Qaeda's extremism and brutal methods, switched allegiance and formed a common front to chase them out.

The front became known as Sahwa or "Awakening". Most of its members are former Sunni Arab insurgents who fought US forces after the fall of Saddam.

But since they sided with the US troops in late 2006, violence has fallen dramatically in Anbar, making the province a symbol of stability in Iraq.

A car bomb, meanwhile, ripped through northern Iraq's restive city of Mosul, killing 18, Iraqi and US officials said.

The US military said initial reports indicated that 17 Iraqi civilians and a policeman were killed, while 71 civilians and nine policemen were wounded in the car bomb attack.

An Iraqi police officer, who asked he not to be named, said insurgents first fired several rockets into the Bab al-Tob market in the centre of Mosul at around 1:00 pm (1000 GMT).

Provincial governor Duraid Mohammed Kashmula then toured the market to assess the damage when a car bomb exploded in the vicinity.

Kashmula survived the bombing, the officer added.

US commanders have said that Iraq's third largest city is the country's last urban bastion of Al-Qaeda. Iraqi troops backed by the US military launched a major offensive on May 14 to chase the jihadists out.

    • Female suicide bomber kills 15 in Iraq

Fifteen people were killed and 35 wounded when a female suicide bomber blew herself up among policemen having lunch north of Baghdad on Sunday, Iraqi police and hospital sources said.

The attack took place in Baquba, capital of multi-ethnic Diyala province, where Sunni Islamist al Qaeda militants have sought to create tension despite a succession of military offensives that have put the group on the back foot.

Sky News are reporting that an Iraqi army captain has been killed following a suicide bombing conducted by a teenage girl. Earlier reports believed the girl to be as young as eight-years-old, but the US army have issued a statement claiming she is considerably older.

    • 70+ people killed in suicide bombings near Baghdad, Iraq

As a Middle Eastern myself, I'm not really sure how I feel about these bombings in Iraq. While it is refreshing to see a news story that actually speaks on the MANY Middle Eastern casualties over the US ones, I'm afraid that even this type of reporting incites stereotypes on all Middle Easterners that is far from true. Even BBC manages to keep a distance from actually representing the lives of the people in these countries. While it is a heated debate, I feel that the media could never fully represent what the people of the Middle East are going through and new stories like this are beginning to become mundane. • Bomb kills 39 in Iraqi city of Karbala

BAGHDAD — A female suicide bomber attacked a group of Shiite worshippers near a mosque in Karbala on Monday, killing at least 39 people and wounding 54, officials said.

The worshippers were gathered at a sacred historical site about half a mile from the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the holiest sites for Shiites.

Karim Khazim, the city's chief health official, said the 39 dead included seven Iranians.

Police said the attacker was a woman but provided no other immediate details. Karbala is located about 50 miles south of Baghdad.

Police closed the area around the twin golden dome mosques and blocked all roads leading to the sites. The site includes tombs of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson who was killed in a seventh-century battle, and his half brother, also a Shiite saint.

Ali Hassan, 30, a clothing merchant who was wounded in the blast, said he was standing near his stall "when I heard a big explosion and I felt strong fire throwing me in the air."

"The only thing I know is there was a big explosion and I saw bodies flying in the air," said Hassan Khazim, 36, who was wounded in the face. "All the tight security measures designed to protect us were in vain."

Separately, a roadside bomb killed two U.S. soldiers Monday as they were clearing a route north of Baghdad, the military said.

The violence came as Vice President Dick Cheney and Arizona Sen. John McCain made overlapping visits to the capital, touting recent security gains and promising to uphold a long-term military commitment to the country so long as al-Qaida in Iraq is not defeated.

    • Baghdad bombings kill more than 50 people

According to reports, two bombs have gone off within minutes of each other in a crowded shopping district in the Iraqi capital, killing at least 53 people and wounding 130.

No one has accepted responsibility as of yet, but the back-to-back bombings were a choice technique used in the attacks on civilians by al-Qaida in Iraq during the worst of the violence in Baghdad in 2006.

Like in previous such attacks, the tactic seeks to draw in the people with the first blast — especially security and medical workers — before a second bomb detonates.

Although the violence has supposedly 'calmed' in and around Baghdad, this serves as a reminder that al-Qaeda are still active, and according to Iraqi government figures released this week, the number of Iraqi civilians killed in February was a third higher than in January.
