Albanian arms dump blast kills 9, injures 243
An army base stocking obsolete munitions destined for destruction detonated a chain of massive explosions yesterday, killing at nine people and injuring more than 240. Nearby villages and passing cars were hit by shockwaves from the blast, which began as workers moved stocks of bombs, bullets and shells stored at the base, a collection point for the arsenal amassed by Albania's Stalinist-era dictatorship. The process of dismantling the 100,000 tonnes of 40-year-old weapons has been a condition of the country's hoped-for membership to NATO.
The force of the explosion was so strong that it was felt at the seaside resort of Durres, 20km away. People living in the nearby village of Gerdec took shelter in concrete bunkers while others fled to the hills. It even shattered windows in an airport several miles away forcing an evacuation.
A Reuters cameraman described people trying to escape: "Terrified people are leaving the area on foot along the highway, women and children. Cars with broken windows have been abandoned on the highway." Russia: US moving arms race to space
The US claimed they shot down a rouge spy satellite on Wednesday night. Russia and China thinks the US had ulterior motives, like testing new missile defense systems. US military hits home run
Going...going...GONE!!! An inoperable U.S. spy satellite orbiting about 150 miles above Earth was struck Wednesday by a missile fired from a U.S. Navy cruiser, military sources told CNN.
The Pentagon said the window of opportunity to strike the 5,000-pound satellite opened Wednesday, when the space shuttle Atlantis landed in Florida. The Pentagon wanted to be sure the shuttle would not be struck by any debris from a destroyed satellite.
It says the exploded parts should dissolve upon re-entering the atmosphere...and then it says the US is offering assistance to mitigate the effects of satellite debris. Great!
But what the heck happens to the cloud of toxic gas when the missile hits the satellite? Is my poor home state slated for toxic rain, not to mention falling missile and satellite parts?! Going...going...GONE!!! An inoperable U.S. spy satellite orbiting about 150 miles above Earth was struck Wednesday by a missile fired... more -

Thailand Explosions Injure Dozens
Three separate explosions in Thailand have injured over 25 people. The explosions, which happened in Sungai Kolok in the Narathiwat province are believed to be the work of separatist rebels who are fighting for an Islamic state.
The blasts themselves took place on Sunday night and targeted entertainment venues including two hotels and a disco, both of which were no doubt full of holiday revelers.
It seems Thailand's southern-most provinces are as volatile as ever with more than 2,500 people killed since the violence escalated in 2004.
It seems that 3 men have been detained with the Police obtaining confessions that the three were responsible for the bombings, as well as several earlier bombings in Sungai Kolok and Sungai Padi.
