"Intolerant" villagers stop "tolerance" festival
The Laxfield Festival of Tolerance near Ipswich, Suffolk, was launched three years ago in a bid to help promote religious tolerance and understanding. But complaints that it has become a little too tolerant have now led to it being axed.
The festival has its origins in the wave of religious violence brought in by "Bloody" Queen Mary during the mid-16th century. John Noyes, a Laxfield shoemaker, was burnt to death on 22 September 1557, one of 34 executed in the county for his religious beliefs. Legend has it that almost all the villagers disagreed with his death sentence and tried to put out their fires to stop his execution.
The festival was started three years ago in a bid to remember the execution and spread the message of religious tolerance. Since then the festival - which includes historical re-enactments, artistic events, and music - has attracted thousands of visitors.
Now villagers say it's too much and they can no longer put up with the crowds and it is attracting the wrong kind of festival goer. The Laxfield Festival of Tolerance near Ipswich, Suffolk, was launched three years ago in a bid to help promote religious tolerance an... more -

Living Library Loans...People?
A library in London is loaning more than just books. Designed to teach tolerance, the living library features individuals who represent stereotypes that are often the target of prejudice and hatred. Readers borrow the individuals for half an hour to hear their narrative and ask questions. Subjects included a Muslim, an immigrant, an atheist, a transgender individual, and a witch.
I think this sounds like a great idea--I'd love to see someone doing this in the US! A library in London is loaning more than just books. Designed to teach tolerance, the living library features individuals who represen... more -

Dog, Cat, Rat - Love Triangle
This pod was created by the mayor of Santa Barbara, California as a holiday greeting. It shows the love that can develop between 3 mortal enemies - dog, cat, and rat.
If these animals that have been food or prey for the other over tens of thousands of years can learn to love one another why can't man stop killing one another? If OTHER countries can teach tolerance, why can't WE?
We need to spend more time teaching kids that its ok to be who you want to be and to love who you want to love. I think if people spent more time trying to be more understanding and compassionate towards those who are different, if they are truly "different," then using excuses to persecute people who live differently then it might just benefit us all. We need to spend more time teaching kids that its ok to be who you want to be and to love who you want to love. I think if people spen... more

Suit Claims U.S. Soldiers Forced To Accept Christianity
And it doesn't end there. There are also stories of groups going into Iraq to proselytize the people and convert them to accepting Jesus in order to receive basic necessities. This is Theocracy not Democracy and it goes against everything our Constitution stands for. As a Christian, I am ashamed of what these Fundamentalist Christians have done in the name of Christ. How dare they use him as the shield for their own hatred. The miitary has no right to dictate religion to soldiers.//////excerpt://////Examples at Fort Riley, where Hall is stationed, included a display outside his military police battalion's office with a quote from conservative writer Ann Coulter saying, "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."
Another photo from Fort Riley shows the book "A Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam" for sale at the post exchange.
"These astonishing and saddening evidence which our foundation is making public today only further buttress our lawsuit," said Mike Weinstein, an attorney in Albuquerque, N.M., and president of the foundation, who graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1977.
Fort Riley spokesman Maj. Nathan Bond said the matter was being referred to post commanders for investigation. He said it is the Army's policy to accommodate all religious beliefs to the extent that they don't conflict with military missions./////end of excerpt. And it doesn't end there. Tolerance Grows in Brooklyn
Religious groups typically preach that homosexuality is a sin and that gay people should not be given the same marriage rights as heterosexuals. When young people are first discovering that they are gay, hearing such things in church can lead to feelings of inferiority and deep emotional scaring. However, while the leaders of religious communities often preach such intolerance, the bible does not directly condemn same sex relationships, and is open for interpretation.
Several churches in Park Slope, Brooklyn, take a very progressive stance on the issue and at times act as gay rights advocates, actively protesting the main branch of their denominations to change their stance on the issue of inclusion and gay marriage. These congregations can be seen as a model for tolerance in religion and an example for the world. Religious groups typically preach that homosexuality is a sin and that gay people should not be given the same marriage rights as hete... more -

Boy Scouts Lose Lease in Gay-Rights Fight
PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 4 ? For three years the Philadelphia council of the Boy Scouts of America held its ground. It resisted the city?s request to change its discriminatory policy toward gay people despite threats that if it did not do so, the city would evict the group from a municipal building where the Scouts have resided practically rent free since 1928.
Hailed as the birthplace of the Boy Scouts, the Beaux Arts building is the seat of the seventh-largest chapter of the organization and the first of the more than 300 council service centers built by the Scouts around the country over the past century. The West Des Moines Project
This submission examines my home town's reaction to its high school production of The Laramie Project. About a Wyoming town's reaction to the 1998 hate murder of Matthew Shepard, the play brings the topic of intolerance into the public forum. A community-wide discussion has resulted from the controversy surrounding the production. The students of Valley High School involved in the production have been at the center of this controversy, many realizing the power they have to spread positive change in their community.
