    • E. coli cases traced to Whole Foods beef

Massachusetts health authorities are warning consumers not to eat ground beef bought from Whole Foods Markets over the last two months after seven infections have been linked to meat bought there, some after a national recall.

The state Department of Public Health today confirmed the seventh E. coli case linked to ground beef. The people who fell ill -- five of whom were hospitalized -- had all eaten ground beef from Whole Foods last month. Preliminary results indicate that the ground beef products were part of a nationwide recall of meat produced by Nebraska Beef Ltd. because of possible E. coli contamination.

"A review of records from Whole Foods indicates that some of the stores received product from the recall list," the state said in a release. "At this time, it is not known why the food listed under the USDA recall was sold to the public after the recall date."

The statement from DPH also said the grocery chain has cooperated with state investigators.

The products involved include ground beef and ground beef patties from the stores' meat counters as well as packaged meat found in the stores' cooler. Any meat bought between June 2 and August 6 should be thrown out, state officials said. Consumers should also check their freezers for meat they may have bought last month and frozen for later use.

      E. coli can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

Ground beef cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit kills the bacteria.

    • You can stop Evil Bag Island!

Did you know that disposable plastic shopping bags float out in the Pacific Ocean, where the currents bring them together to form a floating land mass? This island, this Evil Bag Island, must be stopped! These kids try to do their part by reusing shopping bags when they visit their local Whole Foods Supermarket (the first chain to discontinue the use of disposable shopping bags). If only kids ruled the world, then we'd all reuse our shopping bags. This short film won 2nd place at the 2008 Greenlight Film Festival. Visit GreenScreenCinema.com to learn more about the filmmaker. • Food Price Rise Could Last Another 2 Years

You may have to get used to paying more for your groceries for another two years or more.

Experts say an increase in global food consumption combined with increasing use of crops such as corn and soybeans for alternative fuel production are partly to blame.

Agricultural economists who've studied food price fluctuations cite historical trends that show run-ups in farm commodity prices typically happen in five-year cycles.

Prices flare up in the first two to three years of the cycle and then start to moderate by the fourth or fifth year, said Chris Hurt, agricultural economist at Purdue University .

If 2007 was the first year of this latest cycle, Hurt said farm supply could start catching up to demand by 2010, helping to push down milk, bread, cereal and other grocery prices.

Until then, "Americans will be moving backward in their [food] lifestyle." By that he means that more families will trade down to cheaper food alternatives, or eat out less often, in order to adjust their budgets to both higher food and fuel costs.

Wal-Mart, the No. 1 discounter and supermarket chain, said Tuesday that spending patterns in its stores already support the trend. The retailer said shoppers are buying more white meat and less red meat, stocking up on larger package sizes and buying more boxed frozen meals as eating at home replaces going out.

"This is the first price boom we've seen since the 1970s," said Bill Knudson, professor of agricultural economics at Michigan State University, agreed. "There's an old industry saying that high prices cure high prices. My personal opinion is that food prices will remain high for another two or three more years."

The good news, however, is that "there's no grave concern" of a pending food shortage in the United States, Hurt said.

Why Is Food More Expensive Now?

Experts point to four main global trends for the rise in food prices.

First, growing incomes in developing countries such as China, India, Malaysia mean citizens in these countries are eating better and more frequently, thereby putting more demand on the global food supply.

    • Share Your Ride This Earth Day

Of the 241 MILLION motor vehicles are registered in the US. Transportation is the fastest-growing source of US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the largest end-use source of C02, the most prevalent greenhouse gas. [Source: DOT – Federal Highway Administration, October 2006]

Based on current GHG emission reporting guidelines, the transportation sector directly accounted for 33 percent of total US GHG emissions in 2006, the most recent year of published documentation. This represents a 14% increase from 1990. [Source: EPA – 2008 Inventory of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990 – 2006, March 2008]

The average greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) resulting from energy released by one automobile per year is 12,100 POUNDS or 12.1 TONS from driving an average of 231 miles per week. [Source: EPA – Climate Change – Greenhouse Gas Emissions, February 2008]

Ridesharing just one day a week for one year would result in saving the planet 1.7 TONS of C02. Now imagine 10 people saving 17 TONS, 100 people saving 170 TONS, 1,000 people saving 1,700 TONS, 10,000 people saving 17,000 TONS, 100,000 people saving 171,000 TONS, 1 million people saving 1.7 MILLION TONS.

    • Apple Attacks NYC Over GreeNYC Logo, Steve Jobzilla to Destroy Central Park Next

Apple has filed a formal opposition to NYC's GreeNYC campaign over its new logo, saying that the city's looped apple infringes its own trademark. While Steve's mob says the eco-logo will "seriously injure the reputation with which [Apple] has established for its goods and services." New York's response? "The city believes that Apple's claims have no merit and that no consumer is likely to be confused."

The NYC logo which, ironically enough, seems to be an apple drawn from an infinite loop, (ha!) has been appearing on bus shelters, hybrid taxis and shopping bags from Whole Foods. The Cupertino gang's claim for trademark infringement is, however, hard to prove with a logo, as its key issue is likelihood of confusion or dilution, according to an SF lawyer specializing in trademarks.

This dispute is the third time Apple has been involved in trademark infringement claims—remember its battle with the Beatles' Apple Corps, and Cisco Systems about who had the right to use the iPhone name?

    • What's Your Organic Sign?

The Natural Marketing Institute divides organic shoppers into four different categories. Over the past three years, the number of "devoteds" has almost doubled while the number of "reluctants" has dropped by more than two-thirds. Which type are you?

Devoteds (18 percent): The most committed shoppers to organic and its ideals; the most likely to have changed their lifestyle to integrate organics.

Temperates (22 percent): Have modern organic attitudes and fit organic into their lifestyle; the more they use an organic product, the more it becomes a treat.

Dabblers (41 percent): Are noncommittal about organic, they can take it or leave it.

Reluctants (19 percent): Are the least trusting of organics and believe the conventional products are just as good and that organics are not worth the extra cost.
