    • In India, it pays to use public toilets

      - It pays to use a toilet in southern India, as residents are earning close to a dollar a month by using public urinals, a scheme launched by authorities to promote hygiene and research in rural areas.

Dozens of people are queuing up to use toilets in Musiri, a remote town in Tamil Nadu state, where authorities have succeeded in keeping street corners clean with the new scheme, The Times of India newspaper said on Sunday.

"In fact, many of us started using toilets for urination only after the ecosan (ecological sanitation) toilets were constructed in the area," said S. Rajasekaran, a truck cleaner.

    • Romantic love more powerful than lust researchers say!

Many people mistakenly think that sex is the most powerful force pulling us into relationships. Science tells us that romantic love, a biological urge distinct from sexual arousal, is actually more powerful.

The truth is that the desire for romantic love can be stronger than the will to live and much stronger than your sex drive. So when we talk about the important role that chemistry plays in picking a partner, we're actually on the mark. Love produces some of the most powerful drugs on Earth, and it all happens in our own brains and without ever taking a pill.

Researchers, such as Helen Fisher, author of "Why We Love," have determined that there are distinct neural mechanisms of romantic love, which differ greatly from sexual attraction. Brain-scan studies show that romantic love activates places in the brain that have a high concentration of receptors for dopamine, a chemical tied to motivation, euphoria and addiction.

Yes, this chemical is the same one that gets triggered by certain stimulant drugs. So when you go through a breakup and the supply is cut off, you actually go through a type of withdrawal, and this is why it can be so hard to let go of the person you love.

When we do find someone we click with, we want to believe it will last forever, and for a lucky few it will. Unfortunately, science tells us that for the vast majority of couples, this feeling will only last from one to three years. After that time, we (let's hope) begin to appreciate our commonality, rely on communication and relax in the compassion of our relationships.

Additional studies by the University of San Francisco and professor Rebecca Turner show that another brain chemical, oxytocin, also gets released. This usually occurs after couples have been in a secure relationship. A rise in the level of oxytocin comes from being touched. It makes us want to be physically close, not just sexual. It heightens the feeling of bonding and can increase intimacy and receptiveness.

The research also showed oxytocin at higher levels in women who were involved in committed relationships. The presence of this chemical also helps us to understand why men tend to feel more intimate after sex because that's when their oxytocin reaches it peak.

These chemically based changes won't diminish your capacity for love. Think of them more as additions to what you already have. Feeling completely connected and cared for is really what intimate relationships are all about.

Even though your sexual desire may decrease in intensity, your natural need for a romantic connection will continue for many years to come. Brain chemistry may get love started, but the real keys to lasting relationships are found in your heart and soul.

    • Man have biological clock: male fertility declines in mid-30s

Men - as well as women - have biological clocks that start to tick in their mid-30s.

The chance of successfully impregnating a woman falls if a man is over 35, a French study of over 12,200 couples having fertility treatment suggests. The chance of both natural and assisted conception is significantly lower if the man is over 40. According to researchers, the problems are linked to DNA damage in sperm.

The new study has shown that the risk of miscarriages does not only increase with the mother's but also the father's age. If the father is in his late 30s, miscarriages are more common than if the man is younger. If the man is over 40, the chances of a successful pregnancy are even lower.

According to Dr Alan Pacey, a fertility expert at Sheffield University and secretary of the British Fertility Society: "Previous studies of couples trying to conceive naturally or undergoing IVF have shown that men over the age of about 40 are less fertile than younger men. Moreover, if they do achieve a pregnancy their partners are more likely to miscarry. This study reinforces the message that men aren't excused from reproductive ageing."

    • biological clock affects male fertility

The biological clock ticks for men as well as women, doctors warn today, after research found that male fertility begins to decline when they reach their mid-30s.

Doctors said men who wait until their 40s before starting a family face a greater chance of their partner having a miscarriage, because of the poorer quality of their sperm.

Researchers examined patient records of more than 12,000 couples treated at a fertility clinic in Paris, and separated out the influence of male and female ages on the couples' chances of having a baby.

They found that women whose partners were 35 or older had more miscarriages than those who were with younger men, regardless of their own age. The men's ages also affected pregnancy rates, which were lower in the over-40s.

Doctors have long known that a woman's fertility drops sharply in her mid to late 30s, but the effect of age on male fertility is less well understood. Among women, miscarriage rates typically double to 40% between the ages of 20 and 40.

The findings are a concern, researchers say, because of the trend for men to delay fatherhood. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show the typical age of married fathers rose from 29.1 in 1971 to 34.1 in 2003. The age of men having children outside marriage has remained stable at about 30. And, for the first time, more women in Britain are giving birth in their early 30s than in their late 20s.
