Grrr! Russia's Putin gets tiger cub for birthday
"There's no doubt what Vladimir Putin's favorite birthday present is this year — a rare Ussuri tiger cub.
State television showed the Russian prime minister affectionately petting the two-month-old female cub on Friday. The tiger weighs only about 20 pounds and sleeps in a wicker basket at Putin's residence outside Moscow.
Putin says a good home will be found for the tiger, presumably in a zoo or wildlife preserve. He hasn't decided what to call her, but is leaning toward Mashenka or Milashka.
Putin refuses to say who gave him the cub for his 56th birthday, which was Tuesday.
The Ussuri tiger is also known as the Siberian, Amur or Manchurian tiger. Fewer than 400 are believed to survive in the wild." "There's no doubt what Vladimir Putin's favorite birthday present is this year — a rare Ussuri tiger cub. ... more -

Britain's greeting cards, affectionate? Sexy? Or just plain vulgar...
When Female Traffic Warden Allison Pearson went off to buy a birthday card for her mum, she was disgusted by the range of birthday cards that she found - cards so rude and offensive she felt ashamed of her country. And the sorry truth is, most are bought by women.
The saucy card has long enjoyed an affectionate place in the British imagination - and rightly so. But has the nations card makers started to step over the line on some of their latest designs? World's oldest man celebrates 113th birthday
The world's oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday on Thursday. Tomoji Tanabe told reporters at his home in southern Japan about his joyful life and healthy appetite.
"I'm happy," said Tanabe as the local mayor presented him with flowers and a giant tea cup glazed with his name and date of birth. "I'm well. I eat a lot," he added.
Tanabe, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest living male last year, eats mostly vegetables and believes the key to longevity is not drinking alcohol. The former civil servant lives with his son, drinks milk every day and has no major illnesses, although he now writes in his diary only once or twice a month. He used to write on a daily basis.
"His favourite food is fried shrimp, but we've heard that he's cut back on oily food," said an official at his hometown of Miyakonojo, about 900 km (560 miles) southwest of Tokyo. "He's said he wants to live for another 10 years, that he doesn't want to die."
The Japanese are among the world's longest-lived people, with the number of those aged 100 or older at a record 36,276, a government report last week showed. Japanese women have topped the world's longevity ranks for 23 years, while men rank third after Iceland and Hong Kong The world's oldest man celebrated his 113th birthday on Thursday. The man who went from prisoner to president is celebrating his 90th birthday today at what was supposed to be a quiet affair, but who has a quiet one for their 90th these days? There are now plans to throw a real shin dig with a football festival and a dinner party for 500 special guests.

Don't We All (Well Except for the Rich)...
Nelson Mandela celebrated his 90th birthday. When you've gone through what he's been through, I'm sure 90 is a hell of a milestone. I wish as Mandela has asked, that rich people would help the poor people. And not by asking other poor people to donate to a charity or cause that's "dear to their hearts", but rather by not living so luxuriously and frivolously spending their "well earned" dollars on bullshit. Too bad it won't happen anytime soon. I'm sure Mandela realizes that, he's had to deal with the harsh reality much longer than most of us have.

Born in the summer? Then you're less likely to succeed in education, says new...
Children born in the summer are significantly less likely than winter-born babies to go to university, according to a new report which challenges the belief that summer babies will catch up with their peers by their teens.
The reason for the summer-birth disadvantage is that those children have to sit important exams up to 11 months earlier in their lives than their autumn or winter-born counterparts, the report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) says.
It proposes a number of reforms to ensure that summer-born babies are no longer penalised because of an “unlucky birth draw”. Chief among these is the suggestion that all school test scores should be adapted to take account of students' birth month, right up to GCSE level.
According to today's report, 37 per cent of girls and 29.6 per cent of boys born in September have started higher education by the age of 19. This compares with 35.2 per cent of girls and 28 per cent of boys born in August.
Fewer than 11 per cent of August-born girls enrolled at Oxbridge or another institution in the elite, research-intensive Russell group of universities by the age of 19, compared with 12.1 per cent of September girls. For boys the figures are 8.7 per cent and 9.5 per cent respectively.
The problems associated with summer babies have long been recognised by parents, teachers and children themselves and are the direct result of the administrative convenience demanded by local authorities and schools when admitting children into reception classes at the age of 5. But the issue has gained new prominence in the past two years, after the publication of a number of studies suggesting that the summer-birth disadvantage remains with children through life.
Were you a summer baby? Did you do ok in school, or were you always catching up with the older kids? Were you a winter baby and infinitely cleverer than all the kiddies with July and August birthdays? Should children born later in the year be given special treatment in exams to make up for this perceived disadvantage? Children born in the summer are significantly less likely than winter-born babies to go to university, according to a new report which... more -
Bush Celebrates 62nd Birthday on the fly
TOYAKO, Japan (AP) — Wedged between America's Independence Day and a summit of world leaders, President Bush's 62nd birthday got shortchanged this year.
His advisers tried hard to mark his milestone.
As he flew to Japan, White House press advisers quietly gathered in a darkened conference room aboard Air Force One. A steward stuck a single candle in a coconut cake. Bush and first lady Laura Bush were invited inside.
"Surprise! Happy Birthday!" they exclaimed.
"He dutifully pretended to be surprised," press secretary Dana Perino said.
The party for his birthday Sunday was informal; the gift was not.
The staff presented him with a wooden box made from a giant oak tree that fell on the White House lawn in 2007. Some of the wood from the tree, planted by Benjamin Harrison's daughter in 1892, had been sent to Texas to be fashioned into a box about 12-by-18 inches. They filled it with notes and cards from members of his senior staff.
Bush's birthday also was recognized early, as it has been in the past, on the Fourth of July at the White House where people gather on the South Lawn to watch fireworks.
Bush isn't the only Group of Eight leader celebrating a birthday in July. The summit host, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also were born in July. Happy Bday Dalai Lama!
DHARAMSHALA, India (AFP) — Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama marked his 73rd birthday Sunday with a small function, but with the mood dampened by a lack of progress in talks with China.
Officials said the usual cultural performances were not held this year in Dharamshala, a northern Indian hill town and home to the exiled Tibetan government, due to the unrest in Tibet earlier this year.
There was a small temple gathering attended by the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile Samdhong Rinpoche, while the Dalai Lama held a low-key function for relatives and Tibetan officials at his home, aides said.
Rinpoche said the Tibetan exile community was disappointed by the lack of any progress during talks between the Dalai Lama's envoys and China earlier in the week.
"The seventh round of talks has not produced any tangible results. The Chinese selfish attitude is only adding to the existing doubts about their insincerity for future talks," Rinpoche said.
He also voiced regret that China had repeated allegations that the Dalai Lama incited the riots in Tibet in March in order to sabotage the Beijing Olympics.
"The Dalai Lama is a messenger of peace and non-violence. He follows a middle path policy, which does not seek separation of Tibet from China and does support the Beijing Olympics," Rinpoche said.
He also used the function to call for China to stop the alleged arrests and torture of Tibetans and the "re-education and getting forced confessions" from Buddhist monks.
The Dalai Lama, who has said he opposes Tibetan independence, has called for "real and meaningful autonomy" for the region and an end to what he has said are widespread human rights violations against his people.
Rinpoche said the next talks with Beijing were scheduled for October.
Beijing has accused the Dalai Lama of fomenting unrest in the Tibetan region that erupted on March 14 after four days of peaceful protests against Chinese rule.
The Tibetan government-in-exile says 203 Tibetans were killed and about 1,000 hurt in China's crackdown.
Beijing insists that only one Tibetan was killed, and has in turn accused the "rioters" of killing 21 people.
China has ruled Tibet since 1951, a year after sending troops in to "liberate" the region.

Mandela celebrates birthday
Will Smith led a crowd of 46,664 in a chorus of "Happy Birthday" to Nelson Mandela on Friday at a party for the South African prisoner, president and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
London was the scene of a concert 20 years ago to celebrate Mandela's 70th and to raise awareness of his imprisonment.
Mandela told cheering fans, "Your voices carried across the water to inspire us in our prison cells far away. Tonight, we can stand before you free.
Proceeds from the concert in London's Hyde Park will go toward the 46664 Campaign, which Mandela founded in 2003 to raise awareness about the impact of AIDS, especially in Africa, and to promote HIV-prevention measures around the world. Britain's oldest man reaches 112
Britain's oldest man, thought to be one of three surviving UK World War I veterans, has celebrated his 112th birthday with a VIP lunch and fly-past. Henry Allingham is also the last surviving original member of the Royal Air Force - formed 90 years ago.
A Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, involving a Lancaster bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane, honoured the occasion. The party for Mr Allingham, from Ovingdean, near Brighton, was being held at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. A planned jump by the Royal Air Force Falcons Parachute Display Team had to be cancelled because of low cloud, but the team delivered a birthday card, signed by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy, by Chinook helicopter.
Following the fly-past, a two-seater single-engine Tutor aircraft performed an acrobatic display above Cranwell college's main building for the assembled guests, including his great-great-grandchildren Erik Carlson, two, and four-month-old Lila Rose Gray.
Air Vice Marshal Peter Dye (retired) and Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns attended the event.
Mr Allingham was also presented with a birthday card and cake by children from Cranwell Primary School. Britain's oldest man, thought to be one of three surviving UK World War I veterans, has celebrated his 112th birthday with a VIP ... more
