Big Brother in New York
“The importance of protecting the nation’s financial center will remain,” - Paul J. Browne
The New York City Police Department is working on a plan to track every vehicle that enters Manhattan to strengthen the city’s guard against a potential terror attack, the department’s chief spokesman said.
is it 2008 or 1984?
even in the u.k. & israel two of the most heavily cctv wired places on earth no acts of terror have been prevented. catching people after the fact can always be done by competent detectives with adequate resources. the companies that manufacture & install these "security devices" are making money hand over fist & destroying our right to privacy everyday...but don't take my word for it read the article yourself. “The importance of protecting the nation’s financial center will remain,” - Paul J. Don't Trade Your Freedom for a False Sense of Security
i don't usually quote people that owned slaves, but i've always felt that this line from benjamin franklin was incredibly thoughtful & especially insightful into the current state of our union.
"Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither." - Benjamin Franklin
even if you believe all of the lies & disinformation disseminated by the status quo loving media you should at least have the critical thinking skills to realize that trading privacy & personal freedoms for security is a terrible concept that in its very theory contradicts the ever elusive principals that the u.s. supposedly represents.
if any governments anywhere in the world actually upheld the societal ideals that they purportedly endorse our world would be such a wondrous place that utopia would only begin to describe it.
its always interesting to listen to the way people rationalize trading freedom for security. if you really pay attention those that are most willing to make the trade don't seem to truly value [let alone exercise] any of their constitutional liberties & are content with whatever table scraps the government doles out...apparently forgetting that elected officials work for the people, not the other way around.
here are a few more variations on the quote by mr. franklin:
"People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."
"If we restrict liberty to attain security we will lose them both."
"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." i don't usually quote people that owned slaves, but i've always felt that this line from benjamin franklin was incredibly th... more -

10 week military police siege on chicago citizens
there have been a lot of shooting & murders in chicago this year. in fact the chicago police department has been responsible for 29 of them. apparently, the new chief of police thinks the only way to combat all of the violence isn't better schools [with happy, well paid teachers], or more effective community centers, or even access to jobs that pay real living wages...nope, its mashall law that will keep us safe.
police in the streets throughout chicago armed with m16s & wearing "military-style" uniforms.
unfortunately, this same police state phenomenon has swept the nation & hit a few major u.s. cities recently including the nation's capital washington d.c.
somehow i always knew that things like this would start happening all over...so slowly that people would begin to accept their lack of civil liberties & human rights as being the normal status quo for all of society.
does anyone have any suggestions on how we should go about making sure that our city remains a demilitarized zone? there have been a lot of shooting & murders in chicago this year. in fact the chicago police department has been responsible for 2... more -
SAY NO TO Senator Bond's attack on civil liberties
In order to avoid this disastrous legislation, all the House has to do is stand strong on their February vote, and stick with the current version of FISA.
Matrix-style brain downloads will make school lessons pointless
"Children will learn by downloading information directly into their brains within 30 years, the head of Britain's top private schools organisation has predicted.
Chris Parry, the new chief executive of the Independent Schools Council, said "Matrix-style" technology would render traditional lessons obsolete. He told the Times Educational Supplement: "It's a very short route from wireless technology to actually getting the electrical connections in your brain to absorb that knowledge."
Mr Parry, a former Rear Admiral, spent three years determining the future strategic context for the military in a senior role at the Ministry of Defence".
The military and Orwellian potential of this is really shocking. "Children will learn by downloading information directly into their brains within 30 years, the head of Britain's top privat... more -
Practical tips for destroying RFID
"In this Instructable I will describe different ways to block or kill RFID tags. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. If you do not know about this technology yet, you should definitely start familiarizing yourself with it, because the number of different devices that utilize these types of tags is growing exponentially.
RFID chips are very similar to barcodes in the sense that a certain amount of data is contained within them, and then transmitted to a reading device which then processes and utilizes the information. The major difference is that barcodes have to be physically visible to the reading device, which is usually only able to scan them at a distance of a 12 inches or less. RFID tags, on the other hand, do not have to be visible to the reading device. They can be scanned through clothes, wallets, and even cars. The distance from which they can be read is also much greater than that of a barcode. At DEFCON an RFID tag was scanned at a distance of 69 feet, and that was back in 2005, the possible reading distance now is probably much greater than that. ..... "

Big Brother opens door for GINA genetic testing bill
Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 is expected to be signed into law by President Bush soon.
GINA will amend laws to prohibit a group health plan from adjusting premium or contribution amounts for a group on the basis of genetic information.
Reluctance to get genetic tests range from being fired, priced out of health insurance or dropped from coverage altogether.
Having been used to diagnose fetal problems for inherited diseases, the scope of testing has expanded in the last decade.
There are now about 1,500 genetic tests.
Washington’s Public Citizen group stated that some people have been misled by inaccurate results, and industry oversight is scant and superficial. As the new law takes effect, testing of the genetic tests also needs to be a priority.
My question: How will Big Brother safeguard the DNA tests? Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) of 2008 is expected to be signed into law by President Bush soon. ... more -

Guitar Hero: Van Halen Edition?
The recent announcement of the Aerosmith edition of Guitar Hero left me feeling kinda cold. I mean, yeah, Aerosmith is fine and all, but last time I checked it's 2008 not 1994. The same could probably be said for the latest rumor, only replace 1994 with MOTHER EFFING 1984!!!!
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick spoke today at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference about the challenges facing his company, responding to concerns about growth on a few of its key franchises, like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. While Kotick was wise to avoid revealing specifics, he may have let slip the next artist-focused Guitar Hero title. If true, it may be a very good fit.
He said , "If we're [...] creating a whole new group of consumers, six to eleven year old consumers, who are being exposed to Aerosmith for the first time or Van Halen for the first time, whatever that might be we need to capture much more of that upside opportunity."
Now, Kotick may just be a big fan of Eddie Van Halen, but the profits to be had selling a licensed Kramer 5150 Guitar Hero guitar controller may have just gotten Bobby a bit too excited. Based on what the Activision CEO said, expect more artist-only titles, and consider Van Halen a fairly safe bet. The recent announcement of the Aerosmith edition of Guitar Hero left me feeling kinda cold. I mean, yeah, Aerosmith is fine and all, ... more -
Stop Big Brother: Sign this Petition!
"The Senate will soon vote on a bill to regulate electronic eavesdropping on Americans. What we don't know is whether Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will ask the Senate to take up a bill that was written closely with the Bush administration, or a more reasonable bill.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a choice to make. We need to tell him to make the right choice.
Tell Senator Reid to bring up a reasonable bill that does not let lawbreakers off the hook, and does not let the government seize your phone calls and emails without a warrant.
Senator Reid needs to hear from every American who wants him to stand up for our privacy and not let phone companies off the hook. You can take action by signing a petition to Senator Reid now."

REAL ID Is A Threat To Personal Liberty
Make no mistake about it, the "new" rules for driver's licenses issued today by Der Dept.Of Homeland Security will have all driver's licenses now becoming national ID cards and you will have no privacy. You can also then be pulled over by a police car that just doesn't like the way you look and told to produce this card. If you can't, they can take you in. And in the longrun it will do nothing to keep us safer because a terrorist will now know how to get around it. But of course, that isn't important... Only that you give into the FEAR in order to throw all logic and reason out and conform. I fear we have allowed our country to slip even further away from us with the initiaiton of this act, which is why states such as Maine have been standing up to it and many asking for the REAL ID act to be repealed. However, once again Americans are being pushed into compliance with fear and will of course blindly conform to the state's wishes to turn this country into a police state. Papieren bitte? What's next, RFID chips implanted in them to monitor our movements? Make no mistake about it, the "new" rules for driver's licenses issued today by Der Dept.Of Homeland Security will have... more

nineteen eighty-four 1984 - 2007?
THE time is a mythical 1984 and the place London, the capital of that part of Oceania known as Airstrip One. Winston Smith (John Hurt) is 39, but he has the skinny, wizened look of a perpetually chilled, undernourished child, whose face is that of an old man. He lives alone in a drab one- room flat furnished with a cot, a table and a chair, all dominated by a giant television screen, which monitors him even as he is monitoring it. How does Fahrenheit 9/11 make you feel?
One of the most controversial and provocative films ever, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's searing examination of the Bush administration's actions in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. With his characteristic humor and dogged commitment to uncovering the facts, Moore considers the presidency of George W. Bush and where it has led us. He looks at how - and why - Bush and his inner circle avoided pursuing the Saudi connection to 9/11, despite the fact that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis and Saudi money had funded Al Qaeda. Fahrenheit 9/11 shows us a nation kept in constant fear by FBI alerts and lulled into accepting a piece of legislation, the USA Patriot Act, that infringes on basic civil rights. It is in this atmosphere of confusion, suspicion and dread that the Bush Administration makes its headlong rush towards war in Iraq - and Fahrenheit 9/11 takes us inside that war to tell the stories we haven't heard, illustrating the awful human cost to U.S. soldiers and their families. One of the most controversial and provocative films ever, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's sear... more
