    • Rolling Up The Charger Cord, Permanently

Cords, cords cords. In today’s world, electronic devices almost define us. Along with them goes corded chargers. Since companies love to sell you accessories, they are all proprietary, meaning you have to have one for each of your devices. I have a box full of wall chargers and I haven’t got a clue what they go to, just sitting in my closet. Most from old devices that are stored somewhere in this apartment, I have no clue where.

Named one of TIME magazine’s best inventions of the year, the WildCharger is a flat, thin pad (it could easily be mistaken for a mouse pad) with a conductive surface. When the pad is plugged in, any cell phone or other electronic device that is set on it automatically begins to charge. Well, OK, it’s not quite that easy: the cell phone or device must first be equipped with a WildCharge adapter in order to power up. An adapter connects to a device’s battery cover and has tiny bumps all over it that, when in contact with any part of the pad, receive power and transfer it inward. The pad can be used universally with any device that has an adapter – meaning all different types and brands of cell phones or music and video players can be charged on any pad. And, the charging speed is exactly the same as if the device was plugged into an outlet with a charger.

Right now the device is limited to certain brands, such as the Motorola RAZR and iPod. Each device has to be equipped with an adapter that allows the charge to reach the battery, but can’t you see this being updated so all you have to do is lay any electronic device on it to charge? It will sense anything that is not meant to be on it, such as car keys, and shut itself down, then restart once those items are removed and a compatible device is set on it.

I can see coffee tables embedded with this and other surfaces you might routinely put your electronic devices.

    • The world's first flying saucer: turns air into fuel

I'll take one of these please.

      From the report...

"A University of Florida researcher has plans on the drawing board for a saucer-shaped aircraft that turns the surrounding air into fuel.

If a professor at the University of Florida (U.F.) has his way, the first flying saucer to grace Planet Earth's skies isn't likely to come from outer space but rather from Gainesville, where the faculty member is drawing up plans to build a circular aircraft that can hover in the air like a helicopter without any moving parts or fuel.

In other words, it will look like a UFO, but will actually be more of an IFO—an identified flying object.

    • 'Mental risk' of Facebook teens

Children growing up alongside the rise of social networking websites may have a "potentially dangerous" view of the world, says a leading psychiatrist.Dr Himanshu Tyagi said sites such as Facebook and MySpace may be harmful. He told the Royal College of Psychiatrists annual meeting people with active online identities might place less value on their real lives. And the West London Mental Health NHS Trust expert added this could raise the risk of impulsive acts or even suicide. Dr Tyagi said that people born after 1990 did not know a world without the widespread use of the internet.
He warned that the current crop of psychiatrists were perhaps not fully prepared to help young people with internet-related problems.
While social networking sites offered great benefits, he said, there were potential pitfalls. everything moves fast and changes all the time, where relationships are quickly disposed at the click of a mouse, where you can delete your profile if you don't like it, and swap an unacceptable identity in the blink of an eye for one that is more acceptable." "People used to the quick pace of online social networking may soon find the real world boring and unstimulating."It may be possible that young people who have no experience of a world without online societies put less value on their real world identities and can therefore be at risk in their real lives, perhaps more vulnerable to impulsive behaviour or even suicide."
He called for more investigation and research into the issue.
However, Graham Jones, a psychologist with an interest in the impact of the internet, said that while over-use of social networking sites could lead to problems, the risks posed by them had been overplayed

    • The end of the world?!?!?!?

Okay, this has me worried- critics of this experiment say that this machine has the potential to DESTROY THE PLANET.

      ...

"MEYRIN, Switzerland (June 29) - The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August.

But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?

Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN - some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.

'Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on,' said project leader Lyn Evans.

David Francis, a physicist on the collider's huge ATLAS particle detector, smiled when asked whether he worried about black holes and hypothetical killer particles known as strangelets.

'If I thought that this was going to happen, I would be well away from here,' he said.

The collider basically consists of a ring of supercooled magnets 17 miles in circumference attached to huge barrel-shaped detectors. The ring, which straddles the French and Swiss border, is buried 330 feet underground.

The machine, which has been called the largest scientific experiment in history, isn't expected to begin test runs until August, and ramping up to full power could take months. But once it is working, it is expected to produce some startling findings.

Scientists plan to hunt for signs of the invisible 'dark matter' and 'dark energy' that make up more than 96 percent of the universe, and hope to glimpse the elusive Higgs boson, a so-far undiscovered particle thought to give matter its mass.

The collider could find evidence of extra dimensions, a boon for superstring theory, which holds that quarks, the particles that make up atoms, are infinitesimal vibrating strings.

The theory could resolve many of physics' unanswered questions, but requires about 10 dimensions - far more than the three spatial dimensions our senses experience."

      ...

Is anyone else not comfortable with being sucked into a black hole?

    • Mile high tower announced to be built in Saudi Arabia

Prince Charles famously doesn't care for skyscrapers. He sees them as a vain attempt to assert masculinity, like a rock star with a cucumber down his trousers – or, as he puts it: "Trying to make them ever taller than the other person's building is surely taking the commercial macho into the realms of adolescent lunacy".

Phallic icons or not, we're about to move into a new era of mega-tall buildings that will put structures like Chicago's Sears Tower, at 442 metres (1,450 feet) tall, and Taiwan's Taipei 101, at 508m, in the shade.

George Efstathiou, a managing partner at the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, declares that "the age of the super-skyscrapers is starting again". Considering the scale of the structures on the way, he could well be right.

The structure set to beat them all was announced at the end of March. The Mile High Tower, to be built in a "mini city" near the Red Sea port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, will be about 1,600 metres tall – seven times the height of the Canary Wharf tower in London Docklands, or four Empire State buildings on top of each other.

Archaeologists have discovered what seems to be remains of the world's earliest religious worship site in the remote Ngamiland region of Botswana. Here, our ancestors performed advanced rituals, worshipping the python some 70,000 years ago. The sensational discovery strengthens Africa's position as the cradle of modern man. The new archaeological findings in Botswana show that our ancestors in Africa engaged in ritual practice 70,000 years ago - some 30,000 years earlier than the oldest findings in Europe Archaeologists have discovered what seems to be remains of the world's earliest religious worship site in the remote Ngamiland region ... more

    • Ten-year-old takes wheel when mom passes out

"The ten-year-old girl called 911 as she steered the car. A police officer running alongside helped stop it. All three spoke with Maggie Rodriguez on The Early Show.

A quick-thinking 10-year-old girl is being called a hero after taking control of the car her mother was driving when the woman had a seizure and passed out.

Cassandra Osborne was in the passenger seat when her mother, Gretchan Osborne, lost consciousness.

Frantic, Gretchan called 911, but had the presence of mind to grab the steering wheel to guide the car as she spoke to the operator. Cassandra couldn't get Grethan's leg off the accelerator.

A Galesburg, Ill. police officer who spotted the car, Timothy Jenkins, also reacted in a hurry, managing to run alongside and take control of the steering wheel, and helping Cassandra bring the vehicle to a stop.

On The Early Show Thursday, co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez spoke with all three. Also, parts of Cassandra's 911 call were played"
