    • Who'll Call Obama A Terrorist? - Marc Ambinder

Jonathan Martin notes: "The strategy appears clear: McCain will raise the question to hammer Obama on policy, as he did today on the Democrat's ties to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and hits on taxes, spending and health care. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin will do the dirtier work of using it to hit him on his past associations, notably with Bill Ayers. And should a third party appear on the landscape in the next month, they can go even further."

The reality is that a member of McCain's audience went there today. You can hear it clearly on this video clip taken from MSNBC -- after McCain asks "Who is the real Barack Obama?" the first, loudest voice can be heard answering "Terrorist!"

Judging by McCain's slightly startled reaction, he clearly didn't anticipate that reaction, and McCain's in no way responsible for the utterances of anybody in his audience. But he must have some idea of how deeply this fear/outsider/other meme has spread. A tripartite strategy isn't needed...

    • How Maddow is rewriting the rules of cable news

"I think I have a fear in general about whether being a pundit is a worthwhile thing to be," Rachel Maddow tells me over dinner at a Latin restaurant in lower Manhattan. It's more than the ordinary self-deprecation of someone who just got her own cable commentary show. It's an insecurity essential to the on-air style that's powered the 35-year-old's rapid rise from a wacky morning radio show in western Massachusetts to the liberal radio network Air America and now to her own prime-time show on MSNBC.

Maddow is not a Tim Russert or a Chris Matthews--an ostensibly nonpartisan interviewer who badgers politicians and policy-makers about contradictions in their records. Nor is she a Rush Limbaugh or a Glenn Beck--an attack dog who deals in calculated anger, bluster, and outrage. She's no mild-mannered liberal like Alan Colmes or a veteran observer like Wolf Blitzer or David Gregory. Maddow has broken the broadcasting mold. She has succeeded as an avowed liberal on television precisely because she is not a liberal version of conservatives like Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. Unlike so many progressive media figures who sought to replicate the on-air habits of the aggressive shock jocks of the right, she stumbled upon a workable style for the left. She is liberal without apology or embarrassment, bases her authority on a deep comprehension of policy rather than the culture warrior's claim to authenticity, and does it all with a light, even slightly mocking, touch. She proves that liberals can attract viewers on television when they actually act like, well, liberals.

NBC's own Luke Russert looks at the unfolding financial crisis and the ramifications that it may have for the presidential race.

"First and foremost," he writes in his most recent blog, "this takes the focus away from Governor Sarah Palin, which is exactly what the Obama campaign needs and wants. It also puts the media’s focus back on a real issue, instead of ‘lipstick on a pig.’ Most importantly, it gives both candidates a chance to act presidential and define themselves on economic issues when they have the full attention of the voting public."

    • Congressional Food Fight?

The presidential race is not the only place where change is an issue.
Members of Congress returning to the Capitol this week are being confronted by transformational happenings that have shaken the building to its foundations: Democrats have hired a new company to run cafeteria services. Naturally, this has caused an outbreak of partisan skirmishing.

"I like real food," proclaimed Republican leader John Boehner when asked about the new menu by a producer for another cable news outfit. "Food that I can pronounce the name of."

Boehner is now forced to wrap his lips around such phrases as "broccoli rabe and shaved persimmon," "balsamic glazed butternut squash," and "calico pinto beans"...all on this afternoon's menu, along with the downright patriotic "American Regional Yankee Pot Roast," which, even Boehner would have to admit, kind of rolls right off the tongue. On Fridays, there is a real sushi bar tended by a bona fide Japanese sushi chef. Gone are such grade-school cafeteria specialties as Salisbury steak and fried chicken, slathered in gravy and served with a side of chips. Debate rages among regulars about the merits of the new offerings. One consensus downside: the prices have gone upscale right along with the fare.

The company that Nancy Pelosi and her people have hired has a mandate to "Go Green," complete with a mission statement posted outside the cafeteria on an eco-friendly LCD screen and a requirement to buy carbon offsets. Boehner doesn't think much of that either.

"It reminds me of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, when we had indulgences," says Boehner of the offsets. Perhaps he will nail his theses to the cafeteria door. We'll ask for a photo-op if he does.

    • Chevy Chase slams Sarah Palin and McCain

Comedy legend Chevy Chase appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" today to promote an environmental initiative with his wife, but spent time complimenting Tina Fey's portrayal of Sarah Palin and slamming Palin and running mate John McCain.

"I thought it was extraordinary how well she played her and much she looked like her, I'd like her, personally i felt we didn't need the Hillary stuff, I'd like her to go even harder. I want her to decimate this woman. This woman, I can't believe there hasn't been more about it... It's just unbelievable to me this woman is actually running for vice president."

Later he said, on the importance of comedy, "The more that the nation understands that McCain has lost his mind, the better it is really."

He also talked about playing Gerald Ford and doing SNL in the 1970s.

    • John McCain’s Hypocrisy Regarding Women

Stephanie Cutter on John McCain’s hypocrisy on women.

“I have never heard such a circular argument in my life,” said Cutter. “This is a completely fabricated controversy and I have a hard time believing women are offended by this. People use this saying all the time. I have to wonder why John McCain would want to raise something like this. And maybe [former Massachusetts Gov.] Jane Swift [who appeared earlier on MSNBC] doesn’t know his record but I wonder where her outrage was when John McCain said he was going to beat Hillary Clinton like a drum. Or participated in an event where one of his participants called Hillary Clinton a bitch. Those are direct comments targeted at somebody’s gender. And I didn’t hear any outrage then… They are having a false offense on putting lipstick on a pig, when John McCain doesn’t even stand for equal pay for women, doesn’t stand for children’s health insurance, thinks the economy is just going fine when millions of children are going without health care. I mean where is the offense at that?”

    • MSNBC staff and Denver Police thugs shut down free speech

Members of the primarily pro-Obama crowd also pushed Jones and his crew members and assaulted and smudged their cameras and equipment, with the cooperation and participation of the MSNBC crew– one of whom smudged his own saliva all over an obviously expensive (and sensitive) camera lens. A man in the crowd also flagrantly hit cameraman Richard Reeves, who was quietly filming from a few feet away and gave no pretext for personal attack.

A close video analysis now shows that it was MSNBC staff members who attempted to silence free speech by physically assaulting a group of 9/11 truthers led by Alex Jones during the takeover of a live broadcast at the DNC in Denver.

    • Chris Matthews and MSNBC attack community organizers

While the Republicans have been receiving considerable flak from many people over their condescending comments about Barak Obama being a community organizer, Chris Matthews and Chuck Todd had no problems ridiculing community organizing during Monday evening's Hard Ball program, even going so far as to say that Obama made a mistake in even mentioning his former role as an organizer.

"Is this the new welfare queen," asked Matthews, referring to the Republican attacks on Obama's former community organizer status. "Is this a new symbol...troublemakers, outside agitators, all those phrases, right?"

"They were naive to think that it was a plus," asked Matthews, to which Todd responded, "exactly, and the Republicans took it and redefined the word..."

"Community organizing is not a winning phrase for a place like Scranton," suggested Matthews, implying that community organizers apparently only work in urban settings. But what is perhaps most interesting is the fact that this entire dialogue shows an amazing lack of understanding about community organizing at all, even from supposedly informed commentators like Matthews and Todd. Comments about community organizing not having roots in rural communities show an amazing lack of understanding for twentieth century American history, and sweeps under the rug a century of labor, civil rights or economic organizing in the US.
