    • The Running of the Nerds

The end of July may mean nothing to some besides the upcoming start of August and the impending return to school, but for nerds, geeks, and gamers eveywhere it means Comicon!

Comicon was first held in 1970 at the US Grant Hotel but has greatly expanded since its debut. It has moved from hotel to hotel but is now set to remain in the San Diego Convetion Center until 2012.

Comicon is used to promote film, video games, TV series, and of course, comic books and fantasy novels. While others have approved of this expansion, others say that the convention has become too Hollywood influenced.

G4TV.com is not the only channel covering ComiCon. Reelz, a channel dedicated toward movies, is also covering the convention on their daily news update show called Dailies.

    • Real-life superheroes

"By most observers' reckoning, between 150 and 200 real-life superheroes, or 'Reals' as some call themselves, operate in the United States, with another 50 or so donning the cowl internationally. These crusaders range in age from 15 to 50 and patrol cities from Indianapolis to Cambridgeshire, England. They create heroic identities with names like Black Arrow, Green Scorpion, and Mr. Silent, and wear bright Superman spandex or black ninja suits. Almost all share two traits in common: a love of comic books and a desire to improve their communities."

Battling villains, saving the Earth, and helping out at homeless shelters with an hour left on the meter... who will be the current.com Lois Lane to report on these superheroes?

    • Comic Book Nerd + Doctor = Awesome

It turns out that if you are a comic book character and you get messed up in a fight with a supervillain, the X-Men's Dr. Henry McCoy, aka. the Beast, can help finish you off with his gross incompetence. On the other hand, Dr. Mid-Night knows what Ketamine is good for and can tell when you aren't a real vampire, but just have Xeroderma Pigmentosa.

Polite Dissent is a blog written by a guy who is both a doctor and a huge comic book nerd. He just came out with his 2007 list of best and worst depictions of medicine in comics, with the Beast as the worst doctor of the year. ("I vehemently disagree with him about his choice of medication. Pyridine has no use in the treatment of coma, or in any sort of medical treatment. It's not a medicine at all - it is an organic solvent similar to benzene, and a known carcinogen. The fact that he's mixing metric and English measurements lets you know right of the bat that something is wrong with his advice.")

While you are at the site be sure to check out the running tab of psychic nosebleeds and the Comic Book Drug Reference. ("Serum SO-2: Developed as part of Project Sulfur to provide immunity for soldiers against biological warfare; the experiment was abandoned when it was noted that the serum had the unfortunate side effect of mutating its recipients into monsters.")
