    • First Guantanamo war crimes trial under way

The first U.S. war crimes trial since World War Two began on Monday at the U.S. navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, nearly seven years after the September 11 attacks prompted President George W. Bush to declare war on terrorism.

Osama bin Laden's former driver, Salim Ahmed Hamdan, faces charges of conspiracy and providing material support for terrorism and could face life in prison if convicted by a jury of U.S. military officers.

"This military commission is assembled," judge Keith Allred said after the potential jurors were sworn in.

"You must make your determination whether or not he is guilty based solely on the evidence presented here in court and the instructions I will give you," Allred instructed jurors. "You must impartially hear the evidence."

The first trial in the controversial war crimes court got underway 6-1/2 years after the United States opened the prison camp in Cuba to jail suspected al Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

Prosecutors contend Hamdan, a Yemeni in his late 30s, was close to al Qaeda's inner circle and was on the way to a battle zone with two surface-to-air missiles in his car when he was captured in November 2001, shortly after the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan.

Hamdan's lawyers say he is not a member of al Qaeda, and was merely a driver and mechanic in bin Laden's motor pool who needed the $200 monthly salary.

Hamdan is being tried in a hilltop courthouse overlooking Guantanamo Bay by a jury selected from a pool of 13 U.S. military officers flown in from around the world. The panel must be comprised of at least five members.

    • Obama And The Eclipse Of Reason

EXCERPT: ...it is nevertheless astonishing that American Jews are so blinded by hatred of the Republicans that they are prepared to ignore the fact that Obama speaks out of two sides of his mouth over Israel; ignore the fact that every single one of his foreign policy advisers is hostile to Israel; ignore the fact that he would appease the genocidal fanatics of Tehran; and not only ignore the fact that for twenty years his spiritual adviser was a man who supports the Islamist antisemite Louis Farrakhan but regard it as definitely ‘off-limits’ even to mention it.

Just imagine, as a thought experiment, if McCain was revealed to have been brought into the church by and spent 20 years sitting at the feet of a minister who turned out to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Would Bob Shrum be sneering then that the voters ‘don’t buy this personal stuff’? Au contraire – you wouldn’t see the rapidly departing Republican candidate for dust. One rule for the Democrats and another for the Republicans, it seems, when a charismatic orator promises a glorious new dawn for mankind -- and reason takes a dive.

    • Pakistan blocks US bin Laden hunt

Pakistan's foreign minister has ruled out allowing military personnel from the United States, or any other foreign country, in Pakistan to hunt for Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda.

Mahmoud Qureshi said on Saturday that the country's new government had not permitted any such operation in the regions bordering Afghanistan and never would.

Bin Laden is widely believed to be hiding somewhere in the Afghan-Pakistan border region.

"Our government's policy is that our troops, paramilitary forces and our regular forces are deployed in sufficient numbers. They are capable of taking action there. And any foreign intrusion would be counter-productive," Qureshi told the Associated Press news agency.

"People will not accept it. Questions of sovereignty come in."

Qureshi acknowledged that "there are some infiltrations" still occurring, but he said no covert US military operations to catch al-Qaeda figures, Taliban members or any other suspected fighters, had been staged.

      "There are none," he said.

The new Pakistani government's pursuit of peace deals with tribal groups in the region has been highly criticised in Washington.

    • US not hunting bin Laden on it's turf, syas Pakistan

AP foreign, Saturday July 12 2008 By JOHN HEILPRIN and PETER JAMES SPIELMANN Associated Press Writers NEW YORK (AP) - Pakistan's top diplomat said Saturday there are no U.S. or other foreign military personnel on the hunt for Osama bin Laden in his nation, and none will be allowed in to search for the al-Qaida leader. In an interview with The Associated Press, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said his nation's new government has ruled out such military operations, covert or otherwise, to catch militants. ``Our government's policy is that our troops, paramilitary forces and our regular forces are deployed in sufficient numbers. They are capable of taking action there. And any foreign intrusion would be counterproductive,'' he said Saturday. ``People will not accept it. Questions of sovereignty come in.'' The United States has grown increasingly frustrated as al-Qaida, the Taliban and other militants thrive in Pakistan's remote areas and in neighboring Afghanistan, and has offered U.S. troops to strike at terror networks. Critics in Washington also have expressed frustration with the new Pakistani government's pursuit of peace deals with tribes in the region. Bin Laden is believed to be hiding somewhere in the Afghan-Pakistan border region. Tension between the U.S. and Pakistan have been high after Pakistan said U.S. aircraft killed 11 of its soldiers at a border post in June. U.S. officials have said coalition aircraft dropped bombs during a clash with militants. Qureshi said he tried to reassure Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at their meeting Friday that his government was doing everything it can to combat militants in lawless tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. Pakistan and Afghanistan regularly exchange criticism about not doing more to fight extremists operating along their long, remote, mountainous border that is seen by the U.S. as crucial to stopping terrorism. Qureshi also met Thursday with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who agreed to Pakistan's request to establish an independent commission that will investigate Bhutto's killing. Qureshi acknowledged Saturday that ``there are some infiltrations'' still occurring, but there are no covert U.S. military operations trying to catch al-Qaida figures and its chief, Taliban members or any other suspected militants. ``There are none,'' he said. ``It will create such an anti-U.S. feeling in Pakistan that I would say would mar the atmosphere of cooperation that exists between us.'' Qureshi described Pakistan's counterterrorism as a ``grassroots'' approach. ``Our strategy is that the military option alone is not enough,'' he said. ``This war has to be fought besides the armies, with the help of the people, by winning hearts and minds.'' Does he believe bin Laden is in Pakistan? ``I don't think so. I'm not sure,'' he said. ``Nobody's aware of that. Nobody can speak with certainty. But our policy's very clear. We are allies in this war. And if Pakistan has actionable information vis-a-vis Osama bin laden or any other high value target, Pakistan will immediately take action.'' • Ten years ago, Bin Laden demanded barrel of oil should cost $144

In a 1998 interview, Osama bin Laden — the terrorist organizer of 9/11 who still roams free — listed as one of his many grievances against the U.S. that Americans “have stolen $36 trillion from Muslims” by purchasing oil from Persian Gulf countries at low prices. The real price of a barrel of oil should be $144, bin Laden demanded.

Ten years ago today, the price of a barrel of oil was just $11. Heading into this holiday weekend, the price of a barrel of oil rested at $144 — a thirteen-fold increase.

    • Al-Qaeda, stuck in Web 1.0

Al-Qaeda had been the most media-savvy terrorist group in the world. Sending out regular communiques, that included audio and video.

Sometimes, when you are an authoritarian administration, it's hard to stick to the times. Web 2.0 resources like YouTube and Facebook have not been particularly useful for these terror-techies. Their distribution is a fraction of what they would have hoped. Many of their most popular videos have been given satirical 'director's commentary' by critics of the terrorist network.

The free-flow of information has served to undermine many of the agendas of this organization, but the fear is that Arab nations who censor their internet, are allowing Al-Qaeda's Web 1.0 message to be heard.

Is this just perfect! In March of 2002, he could not find the interest to go after the sole designer of the 9/11 attacks and in stead took us into war on false pretenses. Now, as he looks over graves of those killed in HIS pre-emptive war in Iraq (we would not have been there if it were not for the lies), he is still trying to make the illusion of a connection to 9/11 and this ill gotten war by announcing his determination to get OBL before he ends his term of office. Seven years later!! What a an insult to this Nation this poor excuse for a leader this man has been. And YES, get OBL. It may bring Bush up a notch or two in the polls but it certainly begs the question - if he is successful - why could this not have been done in October/November of 2001? Is this just perfect! • Latest Cheney tape may contain evidence of his whereabouts

Reports surfaced Tuesday that the New York–based Fox News Channel has obtained a tape which purportedly features another cryptic video message from U.S. vice president and known extremist Dick Cheney, widely regarded as the most feared man in America.

Cheney calls on Americans around the world to join the fight in Iraq.

"We have analyzed the tape, and the voice on it matches up with earlier recordings of the vice president," said CIA spokesman George Little, who claimed the tape may contain valuable clues regarding the location of the elusive Cheney, who was last sighted in late 2005 along the border of Maryland and Virginia.

    • ABC News and US intelligence rejects death of Osama bin Laden and resurrects him

A Pakistani newspaper earlier this week quoted top Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud as saying that bin Laden had passed. "The al Qaeda leader, Osama bin laden, is dead," said Mehsud, according to the Pakistan Daily newspaper. The report went on to say that a satellite television network had quoted a Taliban official as saying that bin Laden had died a quiet death after a serious lung complication.

Journalists who attended the press conference by Mehsud, however, say he never made a claim that bin Laden was dead. In addition, Pakistani and Afghan Taliban members are today echoing that bin Laden is alive and well. U.S. officials said earlier this week they did not consider the report of bin Laden's death credible.
