    • Disgraced Korean scientist clones endangered breed of dog

A South Korean team led by disgraced stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk said Thursday it has created 17 clones of an endangered dog breed popular in China.

The Sooam Biotech Research Foundation said in a statement that the cloned Tibetan mastiff dogs were born in April, two months after being requested by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The foundation said it takes two months to produce cloned dogs from pregnancy, but it declined to discuss its success rate, citing internal policy.

    • Tissue of dead humans to be cloned

Scientists are to be permitted to use tissue from dead people to create cloned human stem cells for research, under a legal change put forward by the government.

Health ministers have proposed that laboratories should be allowed to use stored human tissue to create cloned embryonic stem cells without the explicit consent of the tissue donor. This would allow research to be done on tissue donated for medical research as long as 30 years ago. Scientists would also be able to use cells from people who have died since they donated their tissue or who cannot be contacted.

    • Cancer detecting dog to be cloned in South Korea

A Japanese "cancer-sniffing" dog named Marine, who is unable to reproduce due to treatment of a disease, will be cloned by a Seoul-based biotechnology company. Apparently the goal is to distribute the clones worldwide to they can be studied and hopefully detect cancer.

Does cloning an animal mean that their unusual talents, that may have been acquired through some undetermined environmental stimulus, may also redevelop in the clone? It will be interesting to see if it does in this case.

    • SKorea cloned drug-sniffing dogs

The country that created the world's first cloned canine plans to put duplicated dogs on patrol to sniff out drugs and explosives.

The Korean Customs Service unveiled Thursday seven cloned Labrador retrievers being trained near Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul. The dogs were born five to six months ago after being separately cloned from a skilled drug-sniffing canine in active service.

Due to the difficulties in finding dogs who are up to snuff for the critical jobs, officials said using clones could help reduce costs.

The cloning work was conducted by a team of Seoul National University scientists who in 2005 successfully created the world's first known dog clone, an Afghan hound named Snuppy.

The team is led by Professor Lee Byeong-chun, who was a key aide to disgraced scientist Hwang Woo-suk. Hwang's purported breakthroughs in stem cell research were revealed as false, but independent tests proved the team's dog cloning was genuine.

The seven new cloned male dogs are all healthy, though one was sent to a university laboratory a few days ago for a minor foot injury it received during training, according to training center head Lim Jae-ryoung. For now, the dogs all share the same name: "Toppy" - a combination of the words "tomorrow" and "puppy."

    • "now we have the technology to clone a child"

A new form of cloning has been developed that is easier to carry out than the technique used to create Dolly the sheep, raising fears that it may one day be used on human embryos to produce "designer" babies.

Scientists who used the procedure to create baby mice from the skin cells of adult animals have found it to be far more efficient than the Dolly technique, with fewer side effects, which makes it more acceptable for human use...

    • Cloning breakthrough used to treat Parkinsons

Therapeutic cloning has been successfully used to treat Parkinson's disease in mice, US researchers say. The study provides the best evidence so far that the controversial technique could one day help people with the condition.

Parkinson's disease is a condition where nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls muscle movement either die or become impaired. In therapeutic cloning, the nucleus of a cell is inserted into an egg with the nucleus removed. This cell then develops into an embryo from which stem cells can be harvested and used as a treatment.

In this study, stem cells were developed into dopamine-producing neurons the missing nerve cells in Parkinson's disease. Scientists are pursuing the use of stem cell therapy for Parkinson's disease because it would allow the replacement of the dead dopamine-producing nerve cells with new, healthy cells.

    • Cloning embryos from skin cells is now a reality

Imagine giving some scientists a bit of your skin, and with that, they return with a little embryo clone of yourself. That kinda creeps me out. But it's a good step for scientists working towards developing scientifically valuable stem cells. Unfortunately, like other cloned embryo achievements, these new embryos didn't produce any stem cells. THAT will be the next big advancement in this field... that and getting around the stem cell debate. Do you think that cloning embryos for providing stem cells for studying diseases and hopefully one day treating diseases like diabetes and Parkinson's is ok?
