Twins born less than an hour apart might be in different year groups in school
Newborn twin girls, Lexus and Amber Conway, are facing being separated at school - because they were born less than an hour apart into two separate academic years.
Lexus Conway was born in Northampton just before midnight on 31 August, about 45 minutes ahead of sister Amber, who came into the world on 1 September. The twins were born less than an hour apart at the Barratt maternity unit but under current rules in education the twins are due to be split up at school as their birthdays straddle the dividing line for academic years.
Nevertheless, parents Sarah Conway, 37, and Ian Caldwell, 42, are determined the twins will be taught together and the local authorities have promised to look into the case and make a decision nearer the time the twins are due to start school.
Mr Caldwell, 42, a twin himself, said the family would either have the girls taught at home or move to Spain, where he has relatives and where there is a different academic year. Triathlete dies after bike crash in Santa Barbara
Barbara Warren, one of the world's elite endurance athletes in her age group and one-half of a well-known pair of triathlete twins, has died after breaking her neck in a bike crash at the Santa Barbara Triathlon. She was 65.
Warren, of San Diego, died Tuesday at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital when her family told doctors to take her off a ventilator, her twin sister Angelika Drake told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Warren crashed her bike on a downhill road about halfway through the 34-mile cycling section of the race on Saturday, race director Joe Coito said.
Warren was paralyzed from the neck down and was breathing with the aid of the ventilator. Drake said her sister told the family by blinking and nodding that she wanted to die.
"I talked to her and she nodded over and over and over again. She wanted to leave," Drake said. "No athlete would like to have a life with only their eyes talking."
Warren's two daughters and her husband Tom were also with her at the hospital when she died. Barbara Warren, one of the world's elite endurance athletes in her age group and one-half of a well-known pair of triathlete twin... more -

They Smell Like Twins
How much you smell depends on how often you bathe, but precisely how you smell depends on your genes, a new study suggests. The body odors of identical twins are significantly more similar than the scents of unrelated people, researchers in Switzerland have found. The results could pave the way for new tools to diagnose disease or identify people based on scent.
Body odor emanates from a chemical reaction between bacteria on the skin and sweat, a secretion that itself is odorless. BO plays a role in mate selection among mice, and some experiments have suggested its importance for human mate selection as well
By graphing how much of certain carboxylic acids each person produced, the researchers could identify patterns among the twin pairs. Body odor samples taken from the same person on the same day were most similar; those taken from the same person differed only slightly by day. But the pattern of carboxylic acids present in twins' body odors was 10 times more similar than the pattern of acids in unrelated subjects' odors, the researchers reported on Tuesday in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. "For me, that's not very surprising," Natsch says. "Twins look the same, they smell the same.
The finding could open the way for other advances. For example, researchers can now see if body odor reflects other conditions, says Craig Roberts, a biologist at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom: "It's important because it might help with noninvasive diagnosis of disease and potentially for biometric technology using genetically unique and distinct odors." First images published of 'Brangelina' twins
Pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's newborn twins have been published for the first time after a magazine bidding war which news agencies claim topped $14 million.
Hola! magazine, the Spanish sister publication to Hello!, has also published images of the Jolie-Pitt twins.
1 of 2 Hello! magazine, which won international rights to the images, and People magazine, which took U.S. rights, published the photographs in their latest editions, which hit newsstands Monday.
The two publications, which have previously secured image rights to the couple's elder children, are believed to have shared the costs, The Associated Press reported over the weekend.
The agency quoted an unnamed source, not authorized to speak about the deal, as saying the pictures had fetched $14 million.
The images show the couple, newborns Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline and the rest of the Jolie-Pitt family -- Maddox, 7, Pax, 4, Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 2.
The twins were born by Cesarian section at the Lenval hospital in the French Riviera resort of Nice on July 12.
Hello! magazine, which heralds its coverage as the "biggest exclusive of the year," devotes 17 pages of coverage to the twins' arrival.
In an interview published in the magazine, Jolie says: "Wanting a big family is one of the things that brought Brad and I together."
Pitt adds: "When Ange and I were told we were having twins we burst into hysterics... We didn't see this one coming." Watch why the photos went for so much money »
Larry Hackett, the managing editor of People said that it was "thrilled" to have carried the images. People, like CNN, is owned by Time Warner.
Jonathan Klein, co-founder and CEO of Getty Images, which organized the photo shoot, said that all the proceeds would go toward the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which earlier this year donated $1 million to help children in Iraq. Quads born to two separate women in two separate births on same day
Here's a slightly cheerier gay babies story than last week's 'lesbians only wanted one baby, got two, are suiing doctors' post...
Karen Wesolowski and Martha Padgett are a lesbian couple from California who have each given birth to twins, on the same day, who are actually quadruplets. The babies were created from Padgett's eggs and donor sperm using IVF treatment, and two embryos were then implanted in each woman.
Martha, 38, gave birth first to babies Sophia and Alex, and Karen, 42, gave birth 22 hours later to their siblings Andrew and Sienna.
The wonders of modern science!
One biological mum, two pregnant mothers, and four related babies: is this the coolest way to have babies in the modern age? Could these babies' shared birthday be an indicator that a baby's birth date is predetermined, whatever its mother's pregnancy is like? Boost in China's Panda population
Four giant panda cubs have been born within 14 hours in China, boosting the population of the endangered species.
The cubs were born at the Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre in south-west Sichuan province, state media reported.
A pair of female twins was born to nine-year-old Qiyuan late on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.
About an hour later, eight-year-old panda Chenggong gave birth to another cub, while Zhuzhu, also eight, gave birth on Sunday.
The giant panda is one of the world's most endangered species, because of the destruction of its forest habitat and lack of contact between isolated populations.
According to experts only about 1,600 pandas remain in the wild, mostly in Sichuan and neighbouring Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.
Another 180 pandas are being raised in captivity in China. Four giant panda cubs have been born within 14 hours in China, boosting the population of the endangered species. ... more -
In Vitro Fertilization: Not Just For The Infertile
"Omkari Panwar has given new meaning to the idea that 70 is the new 60. Or perhaps 70 is the new 30?
Earlier this month, the 70-year-old mother of two daughters and grandmother to five gave birth via Cesarean section to twins, a boy and girl, at a hospital in India’s Uttar Pradesh state after undergoing infertility treatment. If her age can be verified — she has no birth certificate — she would become the oldest woman ever to give birth.
This startling birth raises all sorts of ethical questions, particularly whether a 70-year-old should be accepted as a patient by any infertility program. But there is yet another twist to this birth. It comes almost exactly 30 years after a woman named Lesley Brown gave birth, also via C-section, in a hospital near Manchester, England. Brown was the mother of the very first baby created by in vitro fertilization, the very technique used in the Indian septuagenarian birth."
There is much more to this article, if you are inerested check it out and let me know your thoughts on this subject. "Omkari Panwar has given new meaning to the idea that 70 is the new 60. Or perhaps 70 is the new 30? ... more -

Identical twins marry identical twins and give birth to identical twins
When identical twin sisters Diane and Darlene Nettemeier met identical twin brothers Craig and Mark Sanders a decade ago, they could never have guessed just how much of their lives would be based around perfect sets of two.
The sets of twins, from Texas, fell in love, went on a double date to Las Vegas, and won thousands of dollars at poker. Sensing they were on a winning streak, they got engaged on the same day, married at a joint ceremony (officially "quarternary marriages"), and built a pair of homes, side by side.
Soon afterwards, despite a million-to-one odds, Diane and Craig went on to have identical twins of their own - Colby and Brady, now seven.

World's oldest mother gives birth to twins at 70
Grandmother Omkari Panwar has given birth to twins at the age of 70
She was utterly determined to have a son.
The fact that to do so would make 70-year-old Omkari Panwar the world's oldest mother didn't even cross her mind.
Her resolve was matched by her husband Charan Singh Panwar, 77.
To pay for the IVF treatment vital to producing a male heir to the family's smallholdings, the retired farmer sold his buffalos, mortgaged his land, spent his life savings and took out a credit card loan.
And it all paid off when Mrs Panwar gave birth to twins - a boy and girl - by emergency Caesarean section in hospital in Muzaffarnagar, seven hours drive north of the Indian capital New Delhi.
The twins, born a month premature and weighing 2lb each, are healthy, according to doctors.
The Panwars already have two adult daughters, and five grandchildren, but the latest arrivals are what they have been waiting for - not least because a son will benefit from a dowry when he marries and will be able to work their land.
Mrs Panwar said: 'For eight months the pregnancy was hectic and painful. But I have given birth before, so I knew what to expect. Sometimes, you have to face the pain if you want something good.'
