55-year-old gorilla dies at Dallas Zoo
The oldest gorilla in captivity, a 55-year-old female named Jenny, has died at the Dallas Zoo — her home for more than half a century, a spokesman said Friday.
Zoo officials decided to euthanize Jenny on Thursday night because of an inoperable tumor in her stomach. Jenny had stopped eating and drinking recently, and tests showed she was unlikely to recover, spokesman Sean Greene said.
Jenny's keepers described her as very sweet though a little bossy.
"If she doesn't want to go out on a certain day, she doesn't," Todd Bowsher, curator of the zoo's Wilds of Africa exhibit, said in May, when the zoo held a birthday bash to celebrate Jenny's longevity. "But she really likes people."
The International Species Information System, which maintains records on animals at 700 institutions around the world, confirmed earlier this year that Jenny was the oldest gorilla in its database.
Jenny was born in the wild and was acquired by the zoo in 1957. She gave birth in 1965 to a female named Vicki, and officials aren't sure why she didn't conceive again. Vicki was sent to a Canadian zoo at age 5.
At the time of Jenny's death she was one of five gorillas at the Dallas Zoo.

Hot industries keep Dallas-Fort Worth employment outlook bright
Amid turbulent times for U.S. workers, the Dallas-Fort Worth area job market has cruised along.
MELANIE BURFORD/DMN
A test is given at Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital in Dallas. The health- care field is considered recession-proof.
The region added 68,000 jobs in the 12 months ended July 31, the most of any U.S. metropolitan area, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Just where are these jobs?
A Dallas Morning News analysis of regional employment statistics found that the private industries adding the most jobs were:
•Health care
•Construction
•Hotels, restaurants and bars
•Warehouse and distribution
•Employment services
"Probably the best place to ride out the recession is right here," said Bernard Weinstein, director of the Center for Economic Development and Research at the University of North Texas. "Houston and D-FW are the two best metro areas in the country."
Of course, not all local industries are hiring, but many Texas cities are faring better than the average U.S. city.
Texas as a whole led the nation in employment growth, adding 248,600 jobs and accounting for 43 percent of all U.S. job growth in the 12-month period, according to the Texas Workforce Commission.
Industry experts caution that job growth is slowing and the outlook for the next 12 months is unclear.
Still, Dr. Weinstein thinks Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth can withstand a "fairly deep and fairly prolonged" national recession. Amid turbulent times for U.S. workers, the Dallas-Fort Worth area job market has cruised along. MELANIE BURFORD/DMN ... more -

14-year-old girl arrested carrying 45 pounds of marijuana, Dallas police say |
The drug smuggler arrived on a bus from Laredo lugging three suitcases filled with 45 pounds of marijuana, Dallas police say.
It was a significant amount for officers to intercept — worth more than $50,000 on the street — but police say the bust was unusual for another reason.
The suspect was a 14-year-old girl.
“We thought she was at a friend’s house,” the girl’s mother said Friday from the doorway of her Northwest Dallas apartment. “I spoke to her like three or four times and had no idea.”
The mother said she thought her daughter was at a sleepover until she learned of the arrest.
“I was in shock,” she said. “I could not believe it.”
The girl and her mother are not being named because The Dallas Morning News generally does not identify juveniles accused of crimes.
Dallas police drug interdiction officers posted at the Tornado bus station in North Oak Cliff noticed the girl Thursday morning as she stepped off a bus. They approached her when she tried to leave in a taxi.
To officers, the girl looked like an adult, said Deputy Chief Julian Bernal, commander of the narcotics division. “They didn’t think at all she was that young.”
But the expression on her face aroused their suspicion.
“You can imagine — she’s 14 years old — she’s streetwise, but she’s not that streetwise,” Chief Bernal said. “She looked like she had just robbed a bank or something.”
As officers began asking questions, the chief said, the girl’s demeanor “could best be described as extremely defiant.”
Officers soon discovered the marijuana, neatly stashed inside 16 heat-sealed plastic baggies with a powder to mask the smell.
The girl had taken a bus south, picked up the drugs, and returned, Chief Bernal said. She knew she was involved in a drug operation, and may even have planned to distribute the marijuana herself, he said.
“It appears that there were several people involved, and that’s what we’re looking into, is who played what role,” he said.
The girl has a history of behavioral problems, the chief said. She was taken to a juvenile detention center after her arrest.
The mother said that as far as she knew, her daughter had no friends or acquaintances in Laredo. The girl was released by authorities Friday, her mother said.
In at least five years, Dallas police say, the 14-year-old is the only juvenile to be arrested by the drug interdiction unit under similar circumstances. The drug smuggler arrived on a bus from Laredo lugging three suitcases filled with 45 pounds of marijuana, Dallas police say. ... more -
Horses sent to Mexico to be slaughtered
The traders at Dallas County's half-filled horse auction knew the fate of their scrawny thoroughbreds even before they herded them into the ring. At least half of the horses for auction at the Dallas County Horse Sales last month were likely to end up in Mexico, where money can still be made off horse slaughter. About 25,000 horses have been shipped to Mexico for slaughter this year. And it wasn't to go back to the ranch.
The ones with visible backbones and skin stretched over their ribs – at least half of the 36 horses for sale – would probably end up in Mexico, where money can still be made off horse slaughter.
Horse owners say they're left with little option but to sell their horses to a "KILLER BUYER," or trader who buys the horses at a reduced price and takes them to Mexico for slaughter. "It's a CREED among Texan traders: We know we HAVE to do it; we just don't say," Mr. Oden said.
About 25,000 horses have been shipped to Mexico for slaughter this year, 10,000 more than this time last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The number of horses sent from Texas has doubled during the same period and makes up the majority of the shipments.
"KILLER BUYERS" purchase weak horses cheaply and transport them across the border, a process that has become more clandestine but also more popular since Congress banned the slaughter of horses for human consumption in 2007. --- The number of horses crossing the border has grown SIX times since then.. in Texas, shipments to Mexico are EASY..
Before the ban, up to 100,000 horses were slaughtered annually. Much of the meat went overseas to countries like FRANCE and JAPAN where horse appears on menus as a delicacy.
Still, advocates haven't stopped their fight to extend the ban. That includes Texas oilman and rancher T. Boone Pickens and his wife, Madeleine, who lassoed enough support to propel the first ban on slaughtering horses for human consumption. "We'll try to figure out how to get this stopped," the Dallas billionaire said about the shipments to Mexico. Economic difficulties are no excuse, he said.
"It's a killing job, and that's not much of a deal as far as I'm concerned."
Barbara Linke of the American Quarter Horse Association, which advocates humane slaughter over starvation, said she fears an extended ban could bring about more neglect.
"I think we are going to see a lot more cases of animal cruelty and a lot more horses abandoned if the bill passes," Ms. Linke said.
'Nothing will change' says Tom Lenz, a veterinarian and chairman of the Unwanted Horse Coalition, said buyers will find a way to get horses across the border even with tougher laws.
"KILLER BUYERS will simply ship them as riding horses and then resell them for slaughter across the border," he said. "Nothing will change."
Instead, the horse industry should avoid an overabundance by learning to breed more selectively, he said. Last year, the Unwanted Horse Coalition reported 170,000 abandoned horses throughout the country.
"We need to deal more with the front end, decreasing horse production," Dr. Lenz said. Few horse owners choose euthanasia because of the expense, he said. It can cost at least $100 for a shot, and that doesn't include disposal fees. ---Mr. Finch said putting horses to sleep is still more humane than slaughter, an argument shared by many animal rights activists.
"We don't slaughter and eat our dogs," he said. "A lot of people think horses are just livestock. They aren't." The traders at Dallas County's half-filled horse auction knew the fate of their scrawny thoroughbreds even before they herded the... more -
New ticket plan aims to keep Dallas fans out of Cards' stadium
The Arizona Cardinals are trying to "protect the nest." This means they'd like University of Phoenix Stadium to continue to sell out, and to do so with as few opposing fans as possible.
In the past two seasons, there was little concern about this since the team sold out every home game. But with ticket sales a bit slower as the third season approaches, the Cardinals are requiring fans who want to buy tickets to the Dallas game on Oct. 12 to also buy tickets for the Aug. 7 exhibition opener vs. New Orleans. Cardinals fans have "created a decisive home-field advantage" the past two years, and the team wants to keep it that way by discouraging single-game ticket sales to Dallas Cowboys fans, team spokesman Mark Dalton said.
"Our goal is to have as many Cardinal fans in the stadium as possible," Dalton said.
In terms of overall ticket sales, "We're a little slower than we were at this point" last year, Dalton said, citing the slowing economy. Dalton estimated about 58,000 season tickets have been sold. Ideally, the Cardinals would like to sell about 60,000 season tickets and hold back 3,000 or so to sell for individual games.
"If we don't get to that threshold, then there will be a few more individual single-game tickets available," Dalton said. The Arizona Cardinals are trying to "protect the nest." This means they'd like University of Phoenix Stadium to continu... more -

Police find $400,000 of cocaine in cop car
DALLAS - Police didn't have to go far to find $400,000 worth of cocaine — it was in an undercover car they'd been driving for two months.

Imus says he's defending, not offending 'Pacman' Jones - CNN.com
"Radio host Don Imus said Tuesday he was making "a sarcastic point" that police often unfairly target blacks when he asked about Adam "Pacman" Jones' race on his show.
mus, who lost his job last year after comments on the Rutgers University women's basketball team, said the latest controversy is fueled by people who are out to get him.
"No man has more discussions about race than I have," he said. "Why not report on that? I know some people want to get me, but this is ridiculous."
Imus pointed out that his show has a black producer and two black co-hosts.
Jones, a Dallas Cowboys defensive back who has had run-ins with the law and is serving a suspension from the National Football League, recently announced he wanted to be known by his real name, Adam or Mr. Jones, rather than his nickname.
Jones said his decision is an attempt to disassociate himself with his well-chronicled history of trouble.
The Imus controversy erupted Monday morning when sportscaster Warner Wolf told Imus that Jones wanted to swap monikers.
He's been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005," Wolf said.
"What color is he?" Imus asked.
"He's African-American," Wolf responded.
"Well, there you go," Imus said. "Now we know."
During his Tuesday morning show, the radio host said Jones was arrested six times because police were "picking on him."
"He's a football player. He is a lovely kid. He was out there having fun," Imus said

Dallas man freed by DNA testing after 27 years in prison
DALLAS - A Dallas man who spent more than 27 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit was freed Tuesday, after being incarcerated longer than any other wrongfully convicted U.S. inmate cleared by DNA testing
James Lee Woodard stepped out of the courtroom and raised his arms to a throng of photographers. Supporters and other people gathered outside the court erupted in applause.
"No words can express what a tragic story yours is," state District Judge Mark Stoltz told Woodard at a brief hearing before his release.
Woodard, cleared of the 1980 murder of his girlfriend, became the 18th person in Dallas County to have his conviction cast aside. That's a figure unmatched by any county nationally, according to the Innocence Project, a New York-based legal center that specializes in overturning wrongful convictions.
"I thank God for the existence of the Innocence project," Woodard, 55, told the court. "Without that, I wouldn't be here today. I would be wasting away in prison."
Overall, 31 people have been formally exonerated through DNA testing in Texas, also a national high. That does not include Woodard and at least three others whose exonerations will not become official until Gov. Rick Perry grants pardons or the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals formally accepts the ruling of lower courts that have already recommended exoneration.
Woodard was sentenced to life in prison in July 1981 for the murder of a 21-year-old Dallas woman found sexually assaulted and strangled near the banks of the Trinity River.
He was convicted primarily on the basis of testimony from two eyewitnesses, said Natalie Roetzel, the executive director of the Innocence Project of Texas. One has since recanted in an affidavit. As for the other, "we don't believe her testimony was accurate," Roetzel said.
