    • CCTV - Olympics broadcast regulations

The International Olympic Committee established restrictions against China Central Televsion International, China's English-language network, from broadcasting coverage of the Beijing Olympics on CCTV International -- which is also available on cable television in the United States. The restriction extends to broadcasts of Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as live coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Further, CCTV International can only offer limited coverage of news, entertainment, and information from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, which also includes online information and media at cctv.com, in strict adherence to the IOC's copyright restrictions. It is not entirely clear why the IOC has imposed these limitations against the Chinese network based in the seat of the Olympic Games' host country. However, the IOC has granted some allowances to CCTV for domestic media coverage in the Chinese Mainland.

    • Country star, Chester Smith, passes away

Chester Smith started his career as a country music singer and radio broadcaster and built a television station empire based in the Modesto area that earned him millions and the respect of those he inspired.

He died Friday at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, according to the tour manager of his longtime friend, country music star Merle Haggard.

Smith became a country music star with his hit song "Wait a Little Longer, Please, Jesus" and his Northern California radio and television shows in the 1950s.

During his radio-TV announcer days of the 1940s through the 1960s, a who's who in country music worked with Smith. The names included Marty Robbins, Del Reeves, Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, Hank Thompson, Jerry Lee Lewis and even rocker Chuck Berry.

    • Oz TV advises CO2-emitting children to die early

Carbon Cult sickos are under fire for an interactive website that tells children they should die because they emit CO2.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's "Planet Slayer" site invites young children to take a "greenhouse gas quiz", asking them "how big a pig are you?". At the end of the quiz, the pig explodes, and ABC tells children at "what age you should die at so you don’t use more than your fair share of Earth’s resources!"

It's one of a number of interactive features that "Get the dirt on greenhouse without the guilt trips. No lectures. No multinational-bashing (well, maybe a little...). Just fun and games and the answers to all your enviro-dilemas," ABC claims.

The site is aimed at 9-year olds. However even a "virtuous" rating (e.g. not owning a car and recycling) is outweighed by eating meat, or spending an average Aussie income - with the result that many 9-year olds are being told they've already outstayed their environmentally-compliant stay on the planet.

"Do you think it's appropriate that the ABC ... depict people who are average Australians as massive overweight ugly pigs, oozing slime from their mouths, and then to have these pigs blow up in a mass of blood and guts?" asked Senator Mitch Fifield in the Herald-Sun.

The state-sponsored broadcaster (why is that not a surprise?) defended the morbid quiz, with ABC managing director Mark Scott insisting "the site was not designed to offend certain quarters of the community but to engage children in environmental issues."

Which is eco-speak for frighten them witless. However, as the excellent science blog Watts Up With That points out, the site clearly breaches Australian broadcasting guidelines on "harmful or disturbing" content.

Meanwhile, the site's designers are revelling in the controversy:

"Thank God for outraged senators - you can't buy publicity like that," PlanetSlayer's "creative director" Bernie Hobbs crowed to the New York Post.

Established in the early 1990s, the Dreamspeakers Film Festival has brought together filmmakers, film producers, television programmers, educators, screenwriters, actors, and film enthusiasts together in Edmonton, the Festival City. Conference speakers will address topics about new media, indigenous broadcasting, and explore Aboriginal film and television in Australia and New Zealand.

    • Lucy's laugh travels the solar system

In 1951, when CBS first broadcast the I Love Lucy show, Ricky, Lucy, Fred and Ethel became electromagnetic signals traveling at nearly the speed of light to receivers all over America, where they got bounced on to our living rooms and into our lives.

But not all those signals stayed on Earth.
A few signals bounced off the surface of our planet or shot straight up into the sky and continued onward. Traveling at light speed in empty space, the signals arrived at the moon after a second and a half, says astronomer Chris Impey of the University of Arizona. An hour later, Lucy passed Jupiter. Five hours later, she was at the edge of our solar system. So where is her signal today? "It's traveled for 57 years," says Impey, "and a light year is about 4 trillion miles, so 57 light years is about 200 trillion miles."

That's a long voyage. I Love Lucy passed Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to our sun, around 1955 and has now moved past about 200 stars and who knows how many planets. This raises the question: If there's intelligent life out there, could it hear Lucy?

    • Radio 1 DJ Dies

Ex-Radio 1 DJ, Kevin Greening has passed away aged 44.

A regular stand-in for Radio 1's daytime shows, Greening was famed for his 'tongue-in-cheek' approach to broadcasting, his fictional characters often took over the airwaves, bringing a slice of humour served with a side of jingles.

Always intent on a broadcasting career, Greening turned down a studio management position so he could take the reigns of his own show. Originally a 'tape editor' for Roger Cook, his career reads like a 'who's who' of radio stations, with everyone from XFM and Virgin right across to the BBC being lucky enough to have him as a presenter.

In 1997, he and Zoe Ball teamed up for the prestigious Radio 1 breakfast show, taking over from Mark Radcliffe and his sidekick, Lard, and adding over 200,000 extra listeners. Greening had been hosting the afternoon show on Smooth Radio prior to his unexpected death.

A true British broadcasting icon, thoughts go out to his family and friends.
