    • CALIFORNIA: Vote YES on Prop 2!

The Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, an initiative that will appear on California's November 2008 ballot.

It is cruel and inhumane to confine animals in cages so small they can’t turn around or stretch their limbs. All animals deserve humane treatment, including those raised for food.
This has already been passed in various other states.

Vote YES on Prop #2 to protect animals from unacceptable abuse.

I worked very hard along with hundreds of other hard working volunteers to get enough signatures to get this on the ballot (over 800,000 signers!) so please help get this passed.

It's NOT about taking your meat away, it IS about humane treatment while they are alive.

I know not all of you are in California, but you probably know someone that is, so PLEASE forward this information!

      VOTE YES ON PROP 2!

      Thank you-

Bears Need Our Help! Pass the Bear Protection Act of 2008

H.R. 5534: Bear Protection Act of 2008:To amend the Lacey Act Amendments of 1981 to extend its protections to bears illegally harvested for their viscera in the same manner as with respect to prohibited wildlife species, and for other purposes.
      Visit: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-5534

Petition Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: World Society for the Protection of Animals

Each year wild bears are killed so that their parts can be sold in Traditional Asian Medicine (TAM) shops in the United States and internationally. In a recent undercover investigation, the World Society for the Protection of Animals found that the trade in intact gallbladders had actually increased since their previous investigation in 2000.

Unfortunately, state laws pertaining to the trade in bear parts are inconsistent and, in some cases, non-existent. The solution is clear: a unifying federal law is the only viable solution for bears! U.S. Representative Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) recently introduced H.R. 5534, the Bear Protection Act of 2008, to protect North American bears. The Act specifically bans the import, export and interstate trade of all bear parts and products, while closing loopholes in existing state laws.

      PLEASE SIGN! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/918445507

North American bears are killed for the interstate
trade in bear parts and products. Already threatened by habit degradation
and hunting, these bears face further imperilment from criminal poaching.

Tens of thousands of bears are annually destroyed to harvest their parts for
Traditional Asian Medicine in the United States and abroad.

H.R. 5534, the Bear Protection Act of 2008, which seeks to conserve bear populations by banning the import, export, and interstate trade of bear viscera and items.

Federal lawmakers must take a stronger stand against illicit poaching.
Ambiguous state laws make smuggling a cinch. Gallbladders camouflaged as
chocolate figs or concealed in coffee to mask odor are ferried to states
      where their sale is permissible.

American poachers profit from a prolific Asian bear bile market. Traditional
Oriental Medicine uses bile acid to treat maladies from headaches,
hemorrhoids, and bone fractures to heart disease, poor vision, and sexual
dysfunction. Thousands of Asiatic Black (moon) Bears spend their entire
lives smashed in iron cages barely larger than their bodies. Farmers cut a
permanent hole into the bear's belly to drain bile from their gallbladders.

The farms have come under fire for profound cruelty. In addition, China's
moon bear numbers continue to drop, with less than 20,000 in the wild. Both
factors open the door for American poachers to smuggle bear parts overseas.

Please visit my other pages for more information on how you can help bears and many other animal species (non-profit links, news, petitions, videos...).

    • Canadians defend clubbing 300,000 baby seals each year as part of their culture

Canadians should wear sealskin to celebrate the country's birthday on July 1, an Inuit leader said on Friday, in defiance of a European movement to ban the import of Canadian seal products.

"I am quite tired of other people telling us how to live our lives, without taking the time to learn about our culture and way of life," National Inuit leader Mary Simon said.

"I am calling on Canadians who support us to get some seal clothing and wear it in a show of solidarity to Inuit and other Canadian sealers on Canada Day."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper defends the seal hunt as a traditional way of life among Canada's aboriginal peoples and a an important source of income for many small communities along the Atlantic Coast.

"Sealing is still important to the Inuit economy in 2008," said Simon, who wore a sealskin vest at a public event earlier this month.

"It angers me that animal-rights protesters, ignorant of and callous toward Inuit culture, are trying to take that away."

Simon said she made the plea in response to plans by animal rights protesters to gather in Brussels and demand a prohibition on seal items like furs, skins and health products.

Protesters -- supported by celebrities like Paul McCartney and Brigitte Bardot -- have long objected to the seal hunt for its cruelty. They've won widespread public opinion over the years with graphic footage of young seal pups being bludgeoned to death on the ice.

    • Spanish parliament approves 'human rights' for apes

Great apes should have the right to life and freedom, according to a resolution passed in the Spanish parliament, in what could become landmark legislation to enshrine human rights for chimpanzees, gorillas, orang-utans and bonobos.

The environmental committee in the Spanish parliament has approved resolutions urging the country to comply with the Great Apes Project, founded in 1993, which argues that "non-human hominids" should enjoy the right to life, freedom and not to be tortured.

The project was started by the philosophers Peter Singer and Paola Cavalieri, who argued that the ape is the closest genetic relative to humans – that it displays emotions such as love, fear, anxiety and jealousy – and should be protected by similar laws.

The resolutions have cross-party support and it is thought they will become law, meaning that potential experiments on apes in Spain will be banned within a year, according to a Reuters report.

Using apes in circuses, television commercials or filming will also be banned and while housing apes in Spanish zoos, of which there are currently 315, will remain legal, supporters of the bill have said the conditions in which most of them live will need to improve substantially.

In 1999, scientists and lawyers petitioned New Zealand's parliament to pass a bill conferring "rights" on chimpanzees and other primates. The government gave the great apes something less than human rights, but also something more practical: legal protection from animal experimentation.

The first country to take such a decision was Britain: Home Office guidelines now forbid experiments on chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas.

    • Pigeons killed at Wimbledon

PETA is attacking the organizers of the Wimbledon tournament for calling in marksmen to shootdown dive-bombing pigeons that were distracting players and leaving droppings on the tables of the open-air restaurant.

The main concern, Wimbledon spokesperson Johnny Perkins said, was the health hazard of bird droppings.

Perkins says that usually hawks are employed to scare off any pigeons that may interfere with the intense matches at Wimbledon, but in this case, the hawks couldn't completely cover all the areas needed.

PETA calls this action "cruel and illegal behaviour" that was used more so as an initial tactic than a last resort solely because the pigeons were a distraction to the players, not because of a public health concern as Wimbledon organizers claim.

What do you think? Were the organizers using the guise of public health to kill the pigeons?

To me, I guess the reason doesn't matter...I just which killing the pigeons was just not one of the possibilities to be taken into consideration.

    • Mountain Gorilla Conservation

      Help Protect Mountain Gorillas

In a 40-50 year lifetime, a female mountain gorilla might have only 2-6 surviving offspring. This slow reproduction makes this species even more threatened.

Less than 700 of the endangered great ape remain, and in 2007, 10 mountain gorilla killings threatened to reverse decades of conservation progress.

      Reason to Hope:

The Virunga Heartland features the last remaining habitat of one of the world’s rarest primates, the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei). This charismatic animal is the flagship species for the conservation of the entire array of wildlife and habitat that make up this unique part of the planet.

AWF has been working to protect mountain gorillas for several decades, funding important research and working to ensure the survival of the mountain gorilla since the late 1970s. This important work has continued in spite of extraordinary circumstances. The human suffering during the Rwandan civil war of the 1990s was incalculable, but without the intervention and continued support of AWF and its partners, the victims of war might also have included the mountain gorilla. Thanks to the bravery and dedication of park rangers - some 70 of whom lost their lives - the Virunga mountain gorillas survived the war and the more recent conflicts in the DRC.

      Continuing Threats:

Despite reasons for optimism, death and extinction are constant threats for the mountain gorilla. Historically, mountain gorillas have been threatened by poaching, loss of habitat from population pressures, civil unrest and spread of disease. And as human populations get closer to gorilla habitats, the gorillas are at greater risk of contracting human diseases, from flu-like problems and pneumonia to ebola.

Fortunately, conservation efforts initiated by the International Gorilla Conservation Program (IGCP), a coalition of the African Wildlife Foundation, Fauna and Flora International and World Wide Fund for Nature, have helped to ensure that the gorilla population will endure. Through a variety of methods, including transboundary collaboration, ranger-based monitoring, community development, anti-poaching activities and habitat conservation, IGCP and its conservation partners are helping the mountain gorillas to make a comeback.

    • Pet Adoption Promo Shut Down --‘Black is Beautiful’

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- An animal shelter inundated with black cats and dogs was planning to run a promotion to help get them adopted instead of putting them down.

The “Black is Beautiful” campaign, which was scheduled to run June 14 through June 20, got heavy criticism for coinciding with a Texas holiday that celebrates the final freeing of enslaved blacks, and was subsequently pulled.

“Last week, a vet tech told me that we needed to start considering euthanasia,” Animal Services Director Cheryl Schneider told Pet Pulse. “We had too many black cats and dogs, some of which had been here for a long period of time.”

Like most shelters, the Williamson County Regional Shelter finds it more difficult to locate homes for black dogs and cats. Schneider had heard of other area shelters reducing the adoption rates on these animals, so she decided to run a promotion not knowing about the holiday.

“I said ‘give me a week and let me see if I discount their fee and can get them adopted out,’ ” Schneider said.

As previously reported by Pet Pulse, the “Black Dog Syndrome” is a common affliction for shelters. In addition to superstitions about black cats being bad luck, these animals are given a bad rap by the media and negative advertising that portrays them as evil and aggressive.

According to Kimberley Intino, director of Animal Sheltering Issues for the Humane Society of the U.S., yet another contributing factor is that black animals blend into the background at shelters.

Williamson County Regional received criticism for their program due to when it was scheduled.

“It was bad timing that it coincided with Juneteenth,” Schneider said. “It’s not our intention to ever offend any person, so we pulled the promotion advertising.”

Juneteenth -- also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day -- originated in Texas and is now a state holiday observed on June 19 in 26 states. It honors the day that Texas slaves were freed from slavery -- 2 ½ years after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

After sending out a press release to promote the Black is Beautiful campaign, Schneider was informed by a local newspaper that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had filed a complaint saying the adoption promotion was inconsiderate.

Although the shelter is no longer running the Black is Beautiful campaign, they have left the discounted adoption rates in place indefinitely. Despite the lack of marketing, the news story itself generated a lot of attention.

“The color is just one part of the animal,” Intino said. “When people focus on the color of the animal, we may be inflating a problem that’s not really a problem.

“It’s just another characteristic that should be considered as one part of that individual animal.”

For more information about the Black Dog Syndrome, read “Large, Black Dogs Go Unwanted” at zootoo.com/petnews/largeblackdogsgounwanted.

    • IAKA - International Aid for Korean Animals - News & Information

Recent news has emerged from Korea, implicating the involvement of several Jincheon County council members in an illegal bear meat restaurant. The story has sparked public outrage in Korea as it highlights the horrible treatment of farmed moon bears and the hypocrisy of the government officials who regard the bears not as a protected species, but as a culinary delicacy.

The restaurant is owned by Kim Dong Ku, also a council member, who along with his wife, operates an adjacent bear farm where the bear meat is obtained on demand. Though the husband and wife have claimed to keep moon bears as pets, news reports reveal that they in fact operate a farm where as many as 20 bears are crammed to a single cage.

When a bear dish is ordered, a bear is brutally clubbed to death and slaughtered on the spot. Restaurant patrons are also given the option of a "take out" menu, in which they can purchase bear cubs directly from the farm.

Though bear farms regretfully remain legal in Korea, slaughtering the bears for their meat violates several laws. The Chef Yoo Young Hun has since publicly apologized for his actions, but claims he did not know that the bears were illegally killed. This is hard to believe, as villagers in the area have witnessed the council members dining at the restaurant very regularly and it is likely that hundreds of bears have been brutally killed and consumed by the council members.

The scandal has created public outrage in Korea, highlighting the cruelty and horrific treatment of Moon Bears and exposing the connection between bear farms and government officials. Now more than ever, we need you to call upon Korea's Ministry of Environment to ban bear farming and to strengthen laws against bear meat restaurants.

    • Over 80 adoptable dogs to be euthanized

The shelter in Daejeon is not publicly financed, nor is it safe from collapse. By the end of June 2008, the shelter is scheduled to be closed and the animals will be left with little hope. The dog's fate will be a ten day stay in a government shelter only to end in death.

An organization of animal lovers, Animal Rescue Korea, has dedicated time and money to help keep these animals away from harm. With ARK's help, all the dogs have been able to be spayed, neutered, and vaccinated.

Over 80 dogs are currently housed in an extended greenhouse. The attention starved, adoptable dogs stand to lose their lives in less than a month unless something is done to save the shelter.

      http://theseoultimes.com/ST/?url=/ST/db/read.php?idx=67...
      http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/

The Ministry of Agriculture defines dogs and cats as pets, not livestock. Many Koreans claim that the right to eat dog meat is a matter of cultural pride stemming from a century's old tradition. It is believed, however, that the habit of eating dogs gained prevalence after the Korean War due to widespread starvation. It grew in popularity after reconstruction because dog dealers and restaurants began to fabricate health benefits derived from eating dog meat. In reality, the trade in dog meat has more to do with greed and profits rather than any sort of tradition.

It is estimated that more than 2 million dogs are killed and consumed in South Korea every year, and with each dog fetching the equivalent of US $250, it is a lucrative industry protected by powerful corporate interests.

Though killing and eating dogs is illegal in South Korea, enforcing the laws are difficult due to influences of powerful dog meat lobbyists, as well as government officials who are themselves dog eaters. Though it is still a minority of Koreans who eat dogs, it is nevertheless practiced by some of the most powerful people in society.

Whether it is the perception of canines as livestock or the general newness of animal rights, Korea is lacking a system that takes responsibility for the nation's abandoned animals. Koreans seem to believe that protecting and caring for abandoned animals is someone else's problem, not their own. As a country that is striving to recover and develop into a global force, animal welfare and rights cannot be swept under the rug. This underbelly of neglect has to stop. People must look at the suffering images of this nation's helpless animals and do what they know is right.

The first step in rectifying the injustices being done to animals, both in Korea and world wide, is to adopt an active attitude towards animal welfare. Not only do people need to care, they have to actually contribute physically. The passive attitude of Korea towards animal welfare has fostered an environment where such irresponsibility can thrive. By voicing concerns about caring for abandoned animals to public officials, Korea can begin the long road towards a more human, animal friendly society

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Marine videotaped throwing a puppy over a cliff while on patrol in Iraq has been kicked out of the Corps, and a second Marine involved has been disciplined, according to a statement released by the Marines.

Lance Cpl. David Motari, based in Hawaii with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, is being "processed for separation" and received non-judicial punishment, officials said in the statement Wednesday night. The Marine Corps would not specify what that punishment was because of privacy regulations.

The statement said Motari received the punishment for his role in the "episode which generated international attention."

The incident appeared on the Internet web site YouTube in March, sparking outrage from animal rights groups around the world.

In the video, Motari is seen throwing the dog off a cliff as it yelps.
