    • Film Studio calls for reshoots on that $80-million kid flick to nowhere...

You'd wonder whats up with that $80-million kid-flick that was recently in limbo: the 'reportedly announced Spike Jonze's troubled fantasy -- (of the Where the wild things are' book) -- will finally land in theatres on Oct. 19, 2009 — almost a year after its original date,' says Defamer.com

The movie’s big problem? -- 'The boy, played by newcomer Max Records, is almost entirely unlikable, coming off as more mean-spirited and bratty than mischievous. Jonze has also had tons of issues with the wild things,' added Goldstein.

    • Circuit City is throwing in the towel

The electronics chain puts out the "For Sale" sign, hiring Goldman Sachs to assist on a deal, most likely with Blockbuster

Circuit City is finally throwing in the towel. Confronted with weak sales, impatient shareholders, and a U.S. consumer pummeled by recession, the electronics chain capitulated on May 9 and retained Goldman Sachs to help negotiate a deal. The same day, Circuit City Stores agreed to allow three board nominees from activist shareholder Mark Wattles to stand for elections.

The moves almost certainly presage a sale of the chain, likely to Blockbuster, where Carl Icahn has stepped up and agreed to finance a Circuit City acquisition. The billionaire—Blockbuster's largest shareholder—has bought into a "game-changing" scheme announced last month in which the troubled electronics retailer would be combined with the troubled movie retailer to create a new national chain selling consumer hardware and software.

    • Blockbuster wants Circuit City; CC says 'show me the money'

Blockbuster Inc said on Monday that it was offering up to $1.3 billion for electronics retailer Circuit City Stores Inc, a bid that left some analysts scratching their heads.

While Blockbuster touted the proposed combination for its synergies, investors were skeptical about its value, and shares of the video rental chain fell nearly 11 percent.

Meanwhile, Circuit City said Blockbuster had been unable to satisfy concerns that it could finance the bid.

Sanford Bernstein analyst Colin McGranahan called Blockbuster's strategic rationale "vague" and pointed "to the oddness of the combination."

    • "Batman" sequel gets an Imax preview

The bat signal will appear next week, eight stories high -- on Imax screens.

The first six minutes of Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight," a prologue that introduces Heath Ledger as the Joker, will appear as a preview in Imax theaters before the studio's "I Am Legend," which opens December 14.

"Dark Knight," the next film in the successful Batman franchise, was filmed in part using Imax cameras, a Hollywood first and a creative decision made by director Christopher Nolan, who also shot 2005's "Batman Begins."

The prologue is one of the scenes photographed in the 70mm Imax format. The rest of the film was filmed in 35mm and will be remastered to the Imax format for release in Imax theaters. In those theaters, the 70mm sequences will fill the screen and the 35mm scenes will appear letterboxed. (In traditional theaters, the aspect ratio will remain the same, though some expect that audiences might see a shift in image quality.)

In the six-minute sequence, a team of robbers -- all wearing clown masks -- enters a bank for a planned heist, but things take an unexpected turn. The imagery demonstrates the depth and clarity offered by the format, but perhaps no image is more chilling than the first look at Ledger's Joker.

Nolan described the moment the close-up comes to the screen.

"Seeing this extraordinary face, eight stories high ... you can smell his breath," he said. "He's a very overwhelming personality, and there's incredible texture to his appearance. It's a creepy moment, as it should be."

    • Beowulf Takes Special Effects One Step Further

According to this film review, Beowulf is "visually stunning", although it gets only one star out of five. I'm a sucker for well-made special effects as well as for sagas about barbarians (I come from ancient barbarian stock myself, having only a thin but glossy veneer of civilization over my true nature...), so whatever the critiques might say, I know I'm going to enjoy that film whatever its weaknesses might be. I wonder if it will prove to be a blockbuster... According to this film review, Beowulf is "visually stunning", although it gets only one star out of five. I'm a sucker... more

    • Say Goodbye to Blockbuster

It looks like the bottom has finally fallen out of Blockbuster. After numerous failed attempts at attracting new customers, the company is finally spiraling out of control.

Sad as it is, the end is near for Blockbuster, and all that pressure it has been placing on Netflix will be lifted.

And in the end, Netflix will be left standing to fight another day.

Although Blockbuster tried everything it could to create a compelling reason for us to use the service, the company could not overcome its downfall. For years, it was hated by those people who saw it as a monolithic organization that enjoyed charging exorbitant late fees and had little or no care of what the customers wanted most. So when Netflix offered an entirely new service, the dynamics of the industry was inexorably changed, and Blockbuster was left playing catch up.
