    • Is your Netflix queue destroying the environment?

My family just got Netflix, and the first DVD we rented was An Inconvenient Truth (really). As we watched the film, I started getting pangs of regret: The movie was surely sitting on the shelf at my local video store, and here we were getting it delivered from hundreds of miles away. Is my Netflix queue destroying the environment?

You can rest your conscience: Renting a DVD by mail is probably a greener choice than going to your local video store. To understand why, let's chart the journey a DVD takes before it arrives in your living room.

Up until the last few miles, your disc's trip is pretty similar no matter how you get it. A Netflix DVD is initially delivered to the company's main distribution center in Sunnyvale, Calif., and then sent by truck with thousands of other discs to one of 53 regional distribution centers across the country. From there it's sent as part of a daily delivery to a nearby U.S. Postal Service hub, and regular mail carriers take over. Meanwhile, a DVD destined for a brick-and-mortar Blockbuster store first goes to the company's McKinney, Texas, facility, where it's repackaged into a Blockbuster-sanctioned plastic case and trucked to your local store. (Blockbuster now offers a rent-by-mail service as well.)

    • Netflix Partners With LG to Bring Movies Straight to TV

Netflix, the DVD-by-mail company with more than seven million customers, has a new strategy that may one day make those red envelopes obsolete.

The company wants to strike deals with electronics companies that will let it send movies straight to TV screens over the Internet. Its first partnership, announced Wednesday night, is with the South Korean manufacturer LG Electronics to stream movies and other programming to LG?s high-definition televisions.

The partnership will extend a novel feature from Netflix, announced a year ago, that allows paying subscribers to watch any of 6,000 movies and television shows on its Web site free. But that service can be accessed only with a personal computer.

    • Netflix-box

Netflix has announced plans for a set-top box from LG to be able to download movies and watch them on your computer. They already offer a certain numbers of hours of online viewing per month with existing subscriptions, so this takes that one step further. But would you actually buy the box to do this, especially since most cable carriers already offer on demand movies? Netflix has announced plans for a set-top box from LG to be able to download movies and watch them on your computer. They already off... more

    • Say Goodbye to Blockbuster

It looks like the bottom has finally fallen out of Blockbuster. After numerous failed attempts at attracting new customers, the company is finally spiraling out of control.

Sad as it is, the end is near for Blockbuster, and all that pressure it has been placing on Netflix will be lifted.

And in the end, Netflix will be left standing to fight another day.

Although Blockbuster tried everything it could to create a compelling reason for us to use the service, the company could not overcome its downfall. For years, it was hated by those people who saw it as a monolithic organization that enjoyed charging exorbitant late fees and had little or no care of what the customers wanted most. So when Netflix offered an entirely new service, the dynamics of the industry was inexorably changed, and Blockbuster was left playing catch up.
