Jerome Tuccille: Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and the Libertarian Party's Big Moment
In 1972, Jerome Tuccille published It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand, his memoir of the libertarian movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Palling around with the likes of economist Murray Rothbard, former Goldwater speechwriter Karl Hess, and others, Tuccille sought to fashion a left-right coalition between elements of the New Left and and the Old Right.
It Usually Begins with Ayn Rand is at once whimsical and moving, poignant and penetrating in its insights about political movements and personal failures. Re-released last year in a new and expanded edition last year, it remains required reading for anyone interested in the libertarian movement—or the American political scene of the past 40 years.
The always outspoken and controversial Tuccille recently sat down with reason.tv to discuss the influence and reach of Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and Milton Friedman. And to talk about how libertarian ideas—and the Libertarian Party—may have a major impact on the 2008 presidential race. I didn't know that Styrofoam was suitable for plantlife...
I was cleaning up some gunk from my family’s lakefront property when I stumbled upon a chunk of Styrofoam floating about. Wanting to clear it from the water to make sure it didn't damage anything, I struggled to bring it to shore, but only managed to flip it onto its other side. With that, to my amazement I saw one or two odd plants sticking out, both lush green and thriving.
Obviously, this got me thinking. With all the hype about how bad Styrofoam is to our ecosystems and what not, I would never expected it and all its chemicals actually contributing to it. Perhaps something like this had been brought up before (in fact, I'm sure of it) but it certainly didn't reach my ears well enough, and I don’t know about you but I haven’t seen many projects related to findings like this.
Also, are we not giving nature enough credit? Granted, it's not like we should be feeding her pollutants 24/7 (*cough*), but perhaps it isn't right for us to baby her and forget how she has the tendency to adapt to her surroundings – regardless of if we’re part of her or not?

Krishna is The Reservoir of Pleasure
Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is an historical person who appeared on this earth in India 5,000 years ago. He stayed on this earth for 125 years and played exactly like a human being, but His activities were unparalleled.
In these Western countries, when someone sees the cover of a book like Krsna, he immediately asks, "Who is Krishna? Who is the girl with Krishna?" etc.
The immediate answer is that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. How is that? Because He conforms in exact detail to descriptions of the Supreme Being, the Godhead. In other words, Krishna is the Godhead because He is all-attractive. Outside the principle of all-attraction, there is no meaning to the word Godhead. How is it one can be all-attractive? First of all, if one is very wealthy, if he has great riches, he becomes attractive to the people in general. Similarly, if someone is very powerful, he also becomes attractive, and if someone is very famous, he also becomes attractive, and if someone is very beautiful or wise or unattached to all kinds of possessions, he also becomes attractive. So from practical experience we can observe that one is attractive due to 1) wealth, 2) power, 3) fame, 4) beauty, 5) wisdom, and 6) renunciation. One who is in possession of all six of these opulences at the same time, who possesses them to an unlimited degree, is understood to be the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
In the Ninth Chapter of the Bhagavad-gita this science of Krishna consciousness is called the king of all knowledge, the king of all confidential things, and the supreme science of transcendental realization. Yet we can directly experience the results of this science of Krishna consciousness because it is very easy to practice and is very pleasurable. Whatever percentage of Krishna consciousness we can perform will become an eternal asset to our life, for it is imperishable in all circumstances. It has now been actually proved that today's confused and frustrated younger generation in the Western countries can directly perceive the results of channeling the loving propensity toward Krishna alone.
It is said in the Bhagavad-gita that even a little effort expended on the path of Krishna consciousness can save one from the greatest danger. Hundreds of thousands of examples can be cited of people who have escaped the greatest dangers of life due to a slight advancement in Krishna consciousness. We therefore request everyone to take advantage of this great transcendental literature. One will find that by reading one page after another, an immense treasure of knowledge in art, science, literature, philosophy and religion will be revealed, and ultimately, by reading this one book, Krsna, love of Godhead will fructify. ... more -

Pro-Life Pharmacies ? Pro-choice retailing ?
I have never understood why drugstores could sell cigarettes and promote health at the same time?
What about pornography, condoms and morning abortion pills ?
What about selling junk food and medecines ?
Some health-care workers who assert a "right of conscience" refuse to provide products that they find objectionable.
The United States was founded on the idea that people act on their conscience-- that they have a sense of right and wrong and do what they think is right and moral

The Myth of Domestic Violence in Same Sex Couples
Myth: Domestic vioence doesn't exist among same-sex couples
Fact: At least one in four gay and lesbian partners wil experience domestic violence in his or her lifetime.
Gay and lesbian couples experience the same issues of power and control as heterosexual couples. This may manifest itself in physical, sexual, verbal and economic abuse.
A major barrier to recognizing abuse. in same-sex couples is that domestic violence has traditionnaly been portrayed as a heterosexual issue with male perpetrators and female victims.
There is a strong feeling in the lesbian community that lesbians are not violent. That is simply not the case.
Studies show that as many as a thrid of lesbians have been victims of sexual assault or coercion at the hands of another woman.

Scott McClellan trashes Bush on Countdown with Keith Olbermann
On "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" Thursday Scott McClellan sat down for a nearly hour-long interview with the MSNBC host to discuss his new book, "What Happened". The wide-ranging interview covered everything from the CIA leak to Fox News to McClellan's critics to the possibility of military action in Iran.
Towards the beginning of the interview Olbermann noted a passage in McClellan's book where he says Bush's foreign policy view was grounded in a "philosophy of coercive democracy." Olbermann noted, "it's a marvelous phrase, but is it an oxymoron?" McClellan said it was:
"[C]ertainly those [policies] have tarnished the reputation of the United States in a very negative way. And I think that has been harmful over the long term. But in terms of the coercive democracy, that was -- and you bring up a very good point about the oxymoron there -- but that was always the strategy for going into Iraq in first place. And I think that is what really drove the president's motivation to push ahead and rush into this. When I think that there were probably other options -- there were definitely other options available to him. He didn't have to box himself in. But when he went to the United Nations he said, either he disarms and the U.N. -- if he doesn't, then the U.N. goes in, or the security council authorizes it, or we will do it ourselves." Childhood 'toy' revealed as ancient Persian relic
Owner John Webber says his grandfather gave him the 5.5-inch (14-centimetre) high mug to play with when he was a child, back in 1945.
He assumed the golden cup, which is decorated with the heads of two women facing in opposite directions, their foreheads garlanded with two knotted snakes, was made from brass.
But he decided to get it valued when he was moving house last year and was told it was actually a rare piece of ancient Persian treasure, beaten out of a single sheet of gold hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus Christ.
