Obama talks about late term abortions

....... Barack Obama says "mental distress" should not qualify as a justification for late-term abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.
In an interview this week with "Relevant," a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain "a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother."
Obama then added: "Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term."
Last year, after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions, Obama said he "strongly disagreed" with the ruling because it "dramatically departs form previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women." from The Huffington Post ... more -

McCain against Roe v. Wade & Comprehensive Sex-ed
John McCain has a 0% rating from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund because he has consistently voted against women's reproductive rights.
Once again it becomes clear that John McCain's policies are identical to Bush's.
He is opposed to Roe v. Wade and has said that he would like to see it overturned.
He's against Comprehensive Sexual Education and only supports "abstinence-only" education which has been proven to be ineffective and is often tied to bringing religion, and misinformation about sex into the classroom.
He's against making birth control affordable by means of requiring insurance companies to cover it.
Do Americans know enough about John McCain's extreme positions on this critical issues?

You know, no matter where you stand on the abortion debate, toying with women’s lives through false advertising is pretty effed up. We’ve read a lot about “pregnancy crisis centers”, which seem like abortion clinics, but really only offer “counseling” that scares and guilt trips pregnant women into not getting abortions. Likewise, it’s really frickin’ irritating to hear that ProChoice.com is actually an anti-choice website serving up all sorts of anti-abortion information. What I don’t understand is how the pro-choice movement doesn’t have the authority to get the domain name back.

Baby survives abortion
"Finley Crampton really shouldn't be here. Although his parents would have loved another child, they knew their baby could inherit a life-threatening kidney condition – and they couldn't take the risk.
After all, their first son had died of the condition and the second was born with serious kidney damage.
So when Finley's mother, Jodie Percival, became pregnant while on the Pill, she and her fiance Billy Crampton, 35, made the agonising decision to abort this child.

'Deciding to terminate at eight weeks was just utterly horrible but I couldn't cope with the anguish of losing another baby,' said Miss Percival, 25.
However, Finley had other ideas. And some time after the operation, Miss Percival felt a fluttering in her stomach.
Eventually her doctor sent her for a scan – and she discovered she was 19 weeks pregnant.
The child had survived the abortion and thrived in the womb. 'I couldn't believe it,' said Miss Percival. 'This was the baby I thought I'd terminated.
'At first I was angry that this was happening to us, that the procedure had failed.
'I wrote to the hospital, I couldn't believe that they had let me down like this. They wrote back and apologised and said it was very rare.'
But a week later, another scan confirmed that this baby had kidney problems too, like the couple's previous children.
Miss Percival carries a gene which triggers multicystic dysplastic kidney – which causes cysts to grow on the kidneys of an unborn baby.
Her first baby, Thane, had lived for only 20 minutes after she was forced to deliver him prematurely.
Her second son, Lewis, now 20 months, was born with a similar condition. He survives on one kidney. "

MPs vote against controversial 12 week abortion limit
UK MPs have voted against the controversial proposals that would have seen the legal time limit on abortions lowered to weeks.
Debates were put forward suggesting that the limit be lowered to 20 weeks, with others reportedly asking for cuts as low as 12 weeks, but all were defeated by a vote of 393 to 71.
For some extra reading on the abortion debate, the conservative MP, Nadine Dorries, waged a high-profile campaign - 20 Reasons for 20 Weeks which was been supported by both the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph.. it lists 20 reasons for a reduction in the time limit on abortion.

Thousands of women have four abortions by age 30
Figures uncovered by the Telegraph show that almost 4,000 women have had at least four abortions. In a "grotesquely bleak" picture of British society, scores of women have had at least eight terminations. The figures emerged as the row over controversial changes to fertility law erupted into a bitter war of words, with a minister accusing "anti-abortion" MPs of trying to "hijack" legislation. Nadine Dorries, the MP leading the campaign to reduce the abortion time limit from 24 to 20 weeks, hit back at the criticism, while revealing that she has received hate mail over her stance. Miss Primarolo made her comments as the Government braced itself for a difficult two days of debate on the Bill, which has been denounced by Christian MPs and clerics. It emerged on Saturday that NHS doctors were refusing to carry out late procedures and that 75 per cent of the 7,000 terminations performed after 17 weeks of pregnancy each year were being carried out at private clinics and charities. Catholic leaders attack Obama on abortion
One of the top Catholic publications in the United States carried an editorial in its latest issue saying Barack Obama's positions in favor of abortion and euthanasia are problematic for Catholic voters. This coincides with several prominent church leaders and politicians echoing this message associating Obama with 'infanticide.'
"It’s important for Americans to know exactly where Barack Obama stands on abortion, because abortion is one of the fundamental issues Americans should be most concerned about," say the editors of the National Catholic Register.
Pro-life leaders including Catholic League president Bill Donahue describe Obama as the most pro-abortion presidential candidate in American history.

Leading abortion rights advocacy group backs Obama
Democrat Barack Obama has won the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America, a leading abortion rights advocacy organization that has supported rival Hillary Rodham Clinton throughout her political career.
The organization announced the endorsement of its political action committee on Wednesday.
"Pro-choice Americans have been fortunate to have two strong pro-choice candidates in Senator Obama and Senator Clinton, both of whom have inspired millions of new voters to participate in this historic presidential race," NARAL president Nancy Keenan said in a statement. "Today, we are proud to put our organization's grass-roots and political support behind the pro-choice candidate whom we believe will secure the Democratic nomination and advance to the general election. That candidate is Senator Obama."
Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said he was surprised by the group's decision to back Obama.
"Senator Clinton's leadership and advocacy on choice issues is second to none," Wolfson said.
Ellen Malcolm, president of EMILY's List, which helps elect female candidates who favor abortion rights, harshly criticized the endorsement.
"I think it is tremendously disrespectful to Senator Clinton — who held up the nomination of an FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B and who spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe v. Wade — to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process," Malcolm said in a statement. "It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them."
NARAL officials said the decision wasn't intended to be a snub of Clinton, who is running to be the first female president.
They said the board decided to back Obama over Clinton because he is overwhelmingly favored to win the nomination and to heal what the organization viewed as a growing rift between black voters and white female activists that the protracted Clinton-Obama contest may have caused. Barack Obama has said that his first act as President would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which would enshrine abortion on demand into federal law and would require tax funding of abortion. This bill would legalize partial birth abortion again.

Obama supporter and former Rep. Tim Roemer, an opponent of abortion rights, released a statement on the calls -- you can read it below.
