    • :( Teens using emoticons in school papers

Despite best efforts to keep school writing assignments formal, two-thirds of teens admit in a survey that emoticons and other informal styles have crept in.

The Pew Internet and American Life Project, in a study released Thursday, also found that teens who keep blogs or use social-networking sites like Facebook or News Corp.'s MySpace have a greater tendency to slip nonstandard elements into assignments.

    • LoLz, OMG-ing @ skoolz.

"But online slang in regular schoolwork still irks educators"
      are kids stupid these days??

"A study released Thursday confirmed what teachers, parents and academics have long suspected: All that instant messaging and texting that teenagers do is creeping into schoolwork. In fact, 64 percent of youngsters ages 12 to 17 have used emoticons, text shortcuts and informal language in school assignments, the survey found.

But as the teens in the imagined conversation above might say, it's really NBD: no big deal."

I can't get enough of Oliver Laric's mixed media and animation. At first glance, it looks like an abstract piece of emoticons, but a bit of squinting reveals much more than appears on the surface.

      Check it out.

      Heddy Honigmann

Acclaimed doc maker Heddy Honigmann (Forever, 2006) goes online to investigate the virtual social lives of teenagers. For six girls with difficult lives, the Internet is a safe haven where they can be themselves without fear of being judged. They submerge themselves in a virtual world, a world that is increasingly portrayed by the media as "dangerous." But their online lives are more important to them than their "real" ones where they are often ignored by their peers or, even worse, bullied and harassed. Honigmann meets the girls first online and then in their homes, getting right to the heart of the matter: these girls are lost souls in search of contact, consolation, help, friendship and love. Online social networks are not going to disappear and Emoticons does not take a stance on whether they should. But it sensitively illustrates that there are children being alarmingly neglected by traditional social systems.

    • Emotions Run Amok in Sleep-Deprived Brains

"Without sleep, the emotional centers of our brains dramatically overreact to bad experiences, research now reveals.

'When we're sleep deprived, it's really as if the brain is reverting to more primitive behavior, regressing in terms of the control humans normally have over their emotions,' researcher Matthew Walker, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley, told LiveScience. "
