    • Newsflash: Teenage Pregnancy is Not Glamorous

I was standing in a bookstore yesterday and saw a young teenage girl beaming into the cover of a magazine with a picture of Jaime Lynn Spears and her new baby. I could tell she was enchanted with this illusion of perfection depicted on a glossy magazine. This magazine cover was simply another Hollywood fairy tale which lies about reality and gives teenage pregnancy a "happily ever after"ending. • McCain against Roe v. Wade & Comprehensive Sex-ed

John McCain has a 0% rating from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund because he has consistently voted against women's reproductive rights.

Once again it becomes clear that John McCain's policies are identical to Bush's.

He is opposed to Roe v. Wade and has said that he would like to see it overturned.

He's against Comprehensive Sexual Education and only supports "abstinence-only" education which has been proven to be ineffective and is often tied to bringing religion, and misinformation about sex into the classroom.

He's against making birth control affordable by means of requiring insurance companies to cover it.

Do Americans know enough about John McCain's extreme positions on this critical issues?

Is McCain any different from Bush on reproductive health or a disrespect for the Constitution and the right to privacy?

Take the Bush-McCain challenge and quiz by watching this video and decide for yourself if McCain is really the "maverick" he's cracked up to be.

    • Pope: sex can become 'like a drug'

"Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged Saturday that the Vatican's teaching against birth control was difficult as he praised a 1968 Church document that condemned contraception. In a speech marking the 40th anniversary of the document, Benedict reiterated the Church's ban against artificial birth control as well as more recent teaching against using artificial procreation methods.

Pope Paul VI's 1968 "Humanae vitae" ("On Human Life") encyclical prohibits Catholics from using artificial birth control.

"The teaching laid out in the 'Humanae vitae' encyclical isn't easy," Benedict said.

"What was true yesterday remains true even today. The truth expressed in 'Humanae vitae' doesn't change; on the contrary, in the light of new scientific discoveries, it is ever more up to date," the pope added.

Benedict appeared to be referring to artificial procreation methods, which in the Church's view offend the dignity of life and go against Vatican teaching that the only way to conceive a child is through intercourse between husband and wife.

"No mechanical technique can substitute the act of love that two married people exchange as a sign of a greater mystery," Benedict said.

Benedict expressed concern that human life risks losing its value in today's culture and worried that sex could "transform itself into a drug" that one partner had to have even against the will of the other.

"What must be defended is not only the true concept of life but above all the dignity of the very person," the pope added.

Paul VI was said to have agonized over whether to allow artificial conception in preparing the encyclical. Benedict described Paul's decision as the fruit of much suffering and the document as "a significant gesture of courage."

"Forty years after its publication, that teaching not only shows itself to be unchanged in its truth, but it reveals the farsightedness with which the problem was tackled," the pope said".

    • Contraceptive for men a shot in the arm

New Australian-developed contraceptive jab for men, taken four times a year, has been proven to be just as effective as birth-control pills for women.

Sydney researchers found the hormonal injection is a quick and reliable method of contraception for up to 95 per cent of males - but pharmaceutical companies have shown little interest in making it available to the public.

The new jab works by suppressing sperm output but does not have a permanent effect.

So what's up guys? Would you want to take on the responsibility of birth control for yourself? Should pharmaceutical companies - or even governments be more willing to support these advancements?

    • Birth control pills, salon haircuts can raise stroke risk

Though 100,000 women, middle-aged and younger, will have a stroke this year, some doctors -- and far too many women -- still think of strokes as an affliction of the elderly or of men.

The truth is, a woman between the ages of 45 and 54 is more than twice as likely as a man to have a stroke, according to recent research from the University of California, Los Angeles. What's more, even though the most common cause is high blood pressure, women are disproportionately affected by some surprising and far-less-well-known causes: chiropractic neck adjustments, pregnancy, oral contraceptives -- even getting a salon hair wash, or riding a roller coaster.

"You can't go through life avoiding everything that carries the slightest risk, but strokes are extremely serious," says Shirley Otis, M.D., a neurologist at Scripps Clinic Medical Group in La Jolla, California. "It's important to be aware of what may be dangerous."

    • Yasmin Birth Control Pill Suspected in Two Deaths

So far, Dutch authorities have recorded 40 cases of venous thrombosis among women using the Yasmin birth control pill, as well as the deaths of two women aged 24 and 17.

Just like the FDA, the DKMA seems to be satisfied with a few women dying each year from use of oral contraceptives. I wonder how many patients are actually warned of this increased risk?

    • The pill 'substantially' cuts ovarian cancer risk

"The contraceptive pill substantially reduces women's risk of ovarian cancer and continues to protect them for at least 30 years after they stop taking it, according to a big scientific analysis published today.

The research, by Oxford University epidemiologists, suggests that the risk of ovarian cancer is cut by 20% for every five years that a woman has been on the pill. Those who take it for 15 years cut their risk by half. Ovarian cancer is hard to detect and kills two-thirds of those who get it."

If there was ever a reason to make the pill available over the counter...

    • British Women To Get The Pill Without A Prescription

Chemists could be given the power to hand out the Pill without prescription under plans unveiled by the Government yesterday. Women and girls under 16 would be able to obtain the contraceptive after one interview with a qualified pharmacist. It would put the Pill on the same footing as the morning-after pill, which is already available without direct authorisation from a doctor.

I think this is fantastic news. I know that it always brings criticisms about whether this promotes sex at a younger age. I would argue that it doesn't promote sex. It's not going to make girls have more sex. It's just going to provide those girls who are doing it anyways to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

    • Abstinence-only sex education is working, NOT!

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 ? The birth rate among teenagers 15 to 19 in the United States rose 3 percent in 2006, according to a report issued Wednesday, the first such increase since 1991. The finding surprised scholars and fueled a debate about whether the Bush administration?s abstinence-only sexual education efforts are working.

The federal government spends $176 million annually on such programs. But a landmark study recently failed to demonstrate that they have any effect on delaying sexual activity among teenagers, and some studies suggest that they may actually increase pregnancy rates.

    • you are the potential saver of birth-control

so, i'm sitting in sociology of deviance and my professor lets us know about a recent proposal of change in birthcontrol pricing. this would mean that on average all birth control in Illinois would cost $53 per month.

please fill in your info on both of these petitions i've linked below. it's pretty much minimal effort that can really cause change that you and your sex partner can probably benefit from... ultimately this isn't about sex, or pregnancy- (for me) it's about the fact that legistlation is (potentially) cornering women into a lack of freedom, information and choice.
