Electric Shock Risk Sparks iPhone Charger Recall
Apple has recommended that iPhone 3G users should charge their handsets via a USB cable attached to a computer rather than using the wall socket plug that shipped with the device. The plug, the company says, could snap off, exposing the user to possible electric shock. Apple will begin issuing new wall socket chargers beginning on Oct. 10.
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has recalled the new ultracompact universal serial bus (USB) adapter plug that shipped with millions of iPhone 3G handsets. The plugs, according to the device maker, can snap off so that the blades remain inside an electrical outlet, creating a risk of electric shock.
No injuries have been reported, Apple noted, but the company has instituted a new adapter exchange program to get stronger plugs into the hands of its customers.
The ultracompact USB adapters are essentially a small white cube with two prongs and a USB port. Apple hasn't detailed the exact conditions under which the prongs might detach, and the company didn't respond to inquires from MacNewsWorld for more detail.
"Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge," read a note on Apple's Web site that details the exchange program.
The affected adapters were supplied with iPhone 3Gs sold in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico and a handful of countries in Latin America. The USB adapter has also been sold as a standalone accessory. California union to seek Schwarzenegger recall
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California's prison guard union said on Monday it will seek the recall of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger after he ordered a pay cut for its members amid the state's protracted budget deadlock.
"We're going to move it as quickly as possible," union spokesman Lance Corcoran said of efforts to launch a referendum to remove the Republican governor, who entered office in 2003 after a recall election of then-Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat.
Corcoran said a recall measure would likely end up on a special-election ballot next year rather than on the upcoming November ballot. The California Correctional Peace Officers Association must collect the signatures of more than 1 million registered voters to qualify the measure, according to the California Secretary of State's office.
"This is a governor that has been a complete failure," Corcoran charged.
Schwarzenegger's term ends in 2010 and he can not run again.
The 30,000-plus-member union has long been at odds with Schwarzenegger, but his order in July to cut the pay of prison guards to the minimum wage sparked their latest confrontation.
Schwarzenegger also ordered job cuts for an estimated 22,000 temporary state employees and sharply reduced wages for 200,000 other workers after California began its fiscal year on July 1 without a budget.
Corcoran said prison guards should be exempt from the pay cuts in light of their public safety role. They manage the largest state prison network in the United States, overseeing about 170,000 inmates, a system plagued by overcrowding and frequent violence between rival gang and ethnic groups. Simplicity bassinets recalled after 2 infant deaths
Following the deaths of two infants, six retailers have agreed to stop selling Simplicity Inc. bassinets, and are recalling the products, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.
Parents should stop using convertible "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets manufactured by Simplicity, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The recall includes Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible "Close-Sleeper" model bassinets, according to the government.
All retailers should stop selling the dangerous bassinets, said the commission, which estimated nearly 900,000 have been manufactured.
On Aug. 21, an infant died when she became trapped between the bassinet's metal bars, according to the commission. On Sept. 29, 2007, a 4-month-old girl also became trapped in the bassinet's metal bars and died, the commission said.
The warning does not cover bassinets made in recent months that have fabric permanently attached over the lower bar, according the commission.
The commission added that it issued a safety alert because SFCA Inc. of Reading, Pa., which bought Simplicity's assets earlier this year, has refused to cooperate and recall the products. SFCA is an affiliate of Blackstreet Capital Partners, a private-equity fund based in Bethesda, Md.
SFCA has said it is not responsible for products previously made by Simplicity, according to the commission. Following the deaths of two infants, six retailers have agreed to stop selling Simplicity Inc. bassinets, and are recalling the produc... more -
