Estelle Getty of 'Golden Girls' dies at 84
Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.
Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.
"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."

Road ID - ID for Triathletes' Safety
This ID, designed for triathletes' safety, could save your life. We provide four great ways for triathletes to wear ID: the SHOE, the WRIST, the ANKLE and the FIXX (neck ID).
Three of its stars had already appeared in previous series: Bea Arthur in "Maude," Betty White in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Rue McClanahan in "Mama's Family." The last character to be cast was Sophia Petrillo, the feisty 80-something mother of Arthur's character.
When she auditioned, Getty was appearing on stage in Hollywood as the carping Jewish mother in Harvey Fierstein's play "Torch Song Trilogy." In her early 60s, she flunked her "Golden Girls" test twice because it was believed she didn't look old enough to play 80.
"I could understand that," she told an interviewer a year after the show debuted. "I walk fast, I move fast, I talk fast."
She came prepared for the third audition, however, wearing dowdy clothes and telling an NBC makeup artist, "To you this is just a job. To me it's my entire career down the toilet unless you make me look 80." The artist did, Getty got the job and won two Emmys.
It culminated a long struggle for success during which Getty worked low-paying office jobs to help support her family while she tried to make it as a stage actress.
"I knew I could be seduced by success in another field, so I'd say, 'Don't promote me, please,'" she recalled.
She also appeared in small parts in a handful of films and TV movies during that time, including "Tootsie," "Deadly Force" and "Victims for Victims: The Theresa Saldana Story."
After her success in "The Golden Girls," other roles came her way. She played Cher's mother in "Mask," Sylvester Stallone's in "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" and Barry Manilow's in the TV film "Copacabana." Other credits included "Mannequin" and "Stuart Little" (as the voice of Grandma Estelle).
"The Golden Girls," which ran from 1985 to 1992, was an immediate hit, and Sophia, who began as a minor character, soon evolved into a major one.
Audiences particularly loved the verbal zingers Getty would hurl at the other three. When McClanahan's libidinous character Blanche once complained that her life was an open book, Sophia shot back, "Your life's an open blouse."
Getty had gained a knack for one-liners in her late teens when she did standup comedy at a Catskills hotel. Female comedians were rare in those days, however, and she bombed.
Undeterred, she continued to pursue a career in entertainment, and while her parents were encouraging, her father also insisted that she learn office skills so she would have something to fall back on.
Born Estelle Scher to Polish immigrants in New York, Getty fell in love with theater when she saw a vaudeville show at age 4.
She married New York businessman Arthur Gettleman (the source of her stage name) in 1947, and they had two sons, Carl and Barry. The marriage prevailed despite her long absences on the road and in "The Golden Girls."
Getty was evasive about her height, acknowledging only that she was "under 5 feet and under 100 pounds."
In addition to her son Carl, Getty is survived by son Barry Gettleman, of Miami; a brother, David Scher of London; and a sister, Rosilyn Howard of Las Vegas. Batman... arrested???
Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday over allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, police and British media said.
The 34-year-old actor spent four hours at a London police station before being released on bail.
British media had reported that Bale's mother and sister complained he had assaulted them at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of his latest film, "The Dark Knight."
The Sun newspaper said police did not question the actor Monday because they did not want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.
Asked Tuesday whether Bale had been arrested, a London police spokesman did not refer to him by name but said: "A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault."
The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because force policy did not authorize him to be identified. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.
The force later said in a statement that the man had been released on bail pending further inquiries and told to return in September. It did not specify the date.
Bale's sister Sharon told reporters "it's a family matter" from her home in Corfe Mullen, 110 miles southwest of London.
A man who answered the door at the home of his mother, Jenny Bale, in nearby Bournemouth said she did not want to comment.
U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn't immediately return messages seeking comment. Repeated phone calls to Bale's London representative went unanswered.
Wales-born Bale first made a splash as the child star of Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun" in 1987. His screen credits also include "American Psycho," "The Machinist" and "Batman Begins."
In "The Dark Knight," Bale reprises the role of wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter-ego Batman, a brooding vigilante superhero still scarred by the murder of his parents.
The Warner Bros. film, which stars the late Heath Ledger as Batman's nemesis The Joker, took in a record $158.4 million at the box office in its opening weekend in the U.S. last week. Worst break-ups ever turned into a play: are yours as dramatic?
Ok, so it’s not high on the 'lots of wars, lots of conflict' news agenda, but it is proper interesting. And it has a topical peg and everything.
When the Bush Theatre asked people to share their worst break-up experiences, it was inundated with replies. Now those stories have become a play, '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover', which will debut at Latitude festival this weekend.
Ranging from the flippant one-line kiss-off to the tender conclusion of a quarter-century of marriage, a four-strong cast, two women and two men, including Ralf Little, best known as The Royle Family's Anthony, will race through 50 break-ups in as many minutes in a lo-fi production that was originally commissioned for Latitude Festival. Sounds like fun!
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, a kind of Bayeux Tapestry of broken hearts, features the much-loved/hated clichés ("Let's just be friends", "I'm not ready for a relationship" etc) but also some spectacularly inventive excuses for waving goodbye. Who, for example, could argue with the following? "Yeah, I see a future for us, but it's more a global warming and climate catastrophe sort of vision. So I'm going take some preventative measures. For the sake of the planet."
What about the cad who dumped his lady via his Facebook status? Or the girl who was charmed by the love token of a hand-made teddy bear, only to discover that it growled, "you're dumped. And I want my CDs back" when she squeezed its tummy? Or the charmer ended it all "three days before the wedding.... I told her I was gay... It wasn't very nice..."
So go on, let it all out. What are your worst break-up stories?

2012 gets a Woody
The set of Roland Emmerich's 2012 just got a little hemp-ier. Woody Harrelson has just joined the cast, portraying a crackpot who might be on to the end of the world as we know it. The disaster film, due out next summer, has been racking up a pretty decent roster of actors, with John Cusack, Danny Glover, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor already on board.
“I play a guy who’s been talking for a long time, the whole world thinks he’s crazy,” Harrelson said of his character. “But he’s been talking that there’s gonna be hell to pay for what’s been going on ecologically and everything.” The set of Roland Emmerich's 2012 just got a little hemp-ier. Can We Talk About Black Theatre? (And how well will we listen?)
"If a black person produces something such as a play, a film or music should it be associated with the word black?" asks playwright Bola Agbaje, author of Gone Too Far! which returns to the Royal Court in July.
This well-written and researched article examines current trends regarding so-called "black theatre" in Britain. Does labeling a play as "black," "gay," "Muslim," or "radical" help to put them in context? Or does it create a segregation of sorts? And also, how do these subcultures of theatre change our definition of what we concider "mainstream?" SAG president: Stop that strike talk
The Screen Actors Guild has told its 122,000 members to stay on the job even if the union fails to reach a deal with film and television studios before their contract expires at midnight Monday.
SAG President Alan Rosenberg said no strike vote has been planned, and the union's negotiators are "coming to the bargaining table every day in good faith."
The talks have been complicated by a split between SAG and the smaller American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which has reached its own agreement with the studios. About 44,000 of AFTRA's 70,000 members belong to both unions, and SAG leaders have urged those members to vote against the deal.
But AFTRA President Roberta Reardon said her union's agreement is "a solid deal" that should be ratified -- and she blasted SAG for trying to influence her members.
