Green Mic Night: Youth Speaking Out About Global Warming
"For the third year, Youth Speaks teams up with Robert Redford and the Sundance Preserve to present a national spoken word forum on Global Warming. Hosted at the Kennedy Center, this event has been an absolute highlight in the campaign to increase awareness of this critical issue. Featuring poets 13-25 years old from across the United States, this program will select 5 representatives to represent Sundance and Youth Speaks at numerous forums across the globe. Past winners have been featured at a number of events, performing for mayors, members of congress, and even past presidents, bringing down the house each time. There is no better way to hear the unique perspective young people of color bring to the table about Global Warming and how industrial pollution, environmental injustice, and unhealthy, non-green communities effect people in their daily lives."
I just attended this and you can watch this performance on this site. It was one of the most moving things I've seen about the environment for a long time. These young poets express themselves in a way that took my breath away. Taxpayers buy Pelosi $16K worth of flowers
"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has spent $16,000 on flowers since taking office, one reason why she spent 63 percent more in her high-profile inaugural year than her low-key predecessor did last year.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) spent a little more than $3 million in the first nine months of 2007, records show, compared to the $1.8 million Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) spent during the same period in 2006.
Republicans are spending more as well. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has increased spending 23 percent above what Pelosi spent when she held the same job. That would be 16 percent if some of Hastert’s closing-out costs were deducted.
The spending patterns indicate Pelosi is seeking to restore the Speaker’s role as a counterweight to the president and reclaim some of the responsibilities Hastert had ceded to his aggressive majority leader, Tom DeLay (R-Texas). Because of their different roles, Pelosi aides say it is unfair to simply compare Pelosi’s spending to Hastert’s.
'When Speaker Pelosi took the gavel, it was an historic moment. In the days since, the Speaker has hosted leaders from across the country and around the world — opening the People’s House to the people and discussing the work of the 110th Congress,' Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said in response to e-mailed questions. 'There are major new costs associated with setting up the new office of the new Speaker of the House.'
Republicans say Pelosi’s office spending undercuts her message that Democrats are restoring fiscal responsibility to the halls of Congress.
'They could have saved the taxpayer $16,000 by sending out an intern to pick flowers from the Capitol lawn, but I guess that would have detracted from the $4 million worth of pork they planted as part of the ‘greening’ project,' said Brian Kennedy, spokesman for Boehner."

'Longest walk' reaches Washington
Thousands of demonstrators are gathering in Washington DC after a five month long journey across America to draw attention to the state of the environment and press for the protection of sacred Native American sites.
Thirty years ago, 40,000 Native Americans and their supporters participated in an historic cross-country march called the Longest Walk. They travelled 3,600 miles from San Francisco to Washington gathering support to successfully halt bills before Congress, that Native Americans said threatened their sovereignty.
Commemorating that event, two groups of walkers set out from Alcatraz Island last February.
The Longest Walk 2 was longer by demand according to organiser Dennis Banks, who founded the first walk in 1978. One group passed through southern states like Texas, Alabama and Tennessee while the northern delegation has walked through Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
Along the way they have picked up 3,800 bags of trash and gathered a list of American-Indian worries - everything from concern about burial grounds under threat in Kentucky to fears about the future of the Arizona Mountains threatened by ski resort development.
Today the marchers are due to end their journey at the White House and later present a 30-page manifesto to a Democratic Congressman, Rep. John Conyers, who advocates on a wide range of minority issues.
Some sceptics have questioned the impact a group of people on foot can have.
But one marcher, Shanawa Littlebow, has no doubts.
"To say it doesn't work, it's to say a wheel doesn't work when it's turning. We're turning. We're walking. It's working," he said. Thousands of demonstrators are gathering in Washington DC after a five month long journey across America to draw attention to the stat... more -

A national speed limit of 55 MPH?
An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and possibly ease fuel prices.
Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. He said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.
Congress in 1974 set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.
As motorists headed on trips for this Fourth of July weekend, gasoline averaged $4.10 a gallon nationwide with oil hovering around $145 a barrel.
Warner cited studies that showed the 55 mph speed limit saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of the country's highway fuel consumption, while avoiding up to 4,000 traffic deaths a year. Guns in the USA
'Gun rights' activists have won a controversial ruling in the US supreme court, which overturned a previous handgun ban in Washington DC.
The controversy surrounds the interpretation of the second amendment to the United States Constitution, which states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The motion was passed after the court ruled for the first time that "the Constitution confers an individual right to gun ownership", and critically that this right goes, "beyond providing for "a well regulated Militia", as the amendment states."
Part of the voting majority (which won on a narrow margin of 5-4), 'arch-conservative' Justice Antonin Scalia, wrote, however that the ruling "is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose." While this may superficially appear to be detrimental to gun restriction movements, Dennis Henigan, a vice-president at the Brady Centre to Prevent Gun Violence, believes that the ruling indicated that "regulation of guns ... is entirely permissible." and that "The ruling gives a constitutional green light to a wide range of gun restrictions.".
The importance of the ruling however, is not simply a case of gun control, but specifically of the banning of guns, and it is the failure of the court to endorse this specifically that worries some; with Richard Daley, mayor of Chicago, calling the ruling "a very frightening decision".
Other senior figures, such as Justice John Paul Stevens of the voting minority, criticised the majority for "its expansive reading of the amendment's "ambiguous" text." The wording of the amendment is obviously outdated: the days of Militias in the US are obviously over; the term being a relic of the time when such armaments were commonplace.
By ignoring the significance of the "Militia" part of the amendment, the Court has made it a "constitutional right to own and use firearms for private purposes". The logical progression from the apparent choice to interpret the second part of the amendment separately is to pose the obvious question: if part of the amendment can be ignored, why not all of it?
Responses from those in the know about American politics would be welcome.

US supreme court overturns Washington gun ban
The US supreme court today overturned an anti-gun law considered the strictest in the nation, affirming that Americans have a right to own firearms for self-defence in its first ever ruling on the issue.
In a narrow 5-4 decision, the judges struck down the 32-year-old gun ban in the city of Washington, passed to fight urban crime, as incompatible with the second amendment of the Constitution.
"Whatever the reason, handguns are the most popular weapon chosen by Americans for self-defence in the home, and a complete prohibition of their use is invalid," the conservative Justice Antonin Scalia said, writing for the majority.
The ruling could persuade rightwing groups to mount similar challenges to local gun bans across the US, although the judges carefully defended the need for firearm bans in schools and public buildings.
The gun case sent shock waves through the presidential campaign, as John McCain attacked Democratic rival Barack Obama for deeming the Washington gun ban constitutionally correct in February.
McCain also revived Obama's comment earlier this year that small-town Americans desperately cling to guns in times of economic hardship.
"Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today's ruling recognises that gun ownership is a fundamental right -- sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly," McCain said.

Political leaders pay tribute to TV's Russert
By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER
The Associated Press
Wednesday, June 18, 2008; 2:28 PM
WASHINGTON -- The crowd at Tim Russert's funeral Wednesday would have made a great panel on his Sunday morning news show.
The two men vying to become president, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain, were there, as were members of Congress, television journalists and several generations of politicians from both parties.
Obama and McCain sat next to each other, per a request by the Russert family.
"It is not easy to preach a homily for Tim and to communicate the feelings we all share concerning this remarkable man, for he was truly one of the great communicators in American society," Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the archbishop emeritus of Washington, D.C., said in his homily.
Russert, the host of the Sunday-morning talk show "Meet the Press," died Friday of a heart attack at the age of 58. He also served as the Washington bureau chief for NBC News. A political insider, Russert was known for conducting tough interviews of Washington's most powerful politicians, yet he evoked an everyman quality that showed his blue-collar, Buffalo, N.Y., roots.
Among the dignitaries were former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
There were also enough TV journalists and political strategists to fill several political roundtables. Among the honorary pallbearers were NBC News anchor Brian Williams, "Today" show host Matt Lauer and Bryant Gumbel. Retired anchor Tom Brokaw greeted the guests, saying no house meant more to Russert than "the house of the Lord."
The funeral service at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Georgetown was private, but a loud speaker broadcast the service to about 100 onlookers standing along the tree-lined street. A man wearing a kilt played the bagpipes as the crowd arrived, and delivered a rendition of "Amazing Grace" as Russert's casket was taken from the church.
Russert's 22-year-old son, Luke, gave the eulogy. His mother and Russert's widow, Maureen Orth, looked on.
"My dad was my best friend," Luke Russert said, his voice strong and clear. "To explain my bond with my father is utterly impossible to put into words."
Luke Russert then gave what he described as his father's last speech.
He urged parents to hug their children, politicians to avoid "low tactics," and journalists to practice integrity and honesty.
Luke Russert said that whenever he did well on a school assignment, his father would yell, "Yahoo! You smoked 'em, buddy!"
He asked the crowd to imagine a special edition of "Meet the Press" this Sunday in heaven, perhaps with a debate between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, or John F. Kennedy and Barry Goldwater. He even suggested a talk on the need for a new political party involving Teddy Roosevelt, the former president who later ran unsuccessfully for president as a member of the Bull Moose party.
"Tim Russert led with his heart, his compassion and most of all his honor," his son said. "I love you, dad, and in his words, let us all go get 'em!"
An invitation-only memorial service was scheduled at the Kennedy Center later on Wednesday. By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER The Associated Press Wednesday, June 18, 2008; 2:28 PM ... more -
