Carly Fiorina's Friendly Fire
Carly Fiorina has become my favorite surrogate for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. You never know what's going to come out of her mouth.
As Dana Millbank sketched in July, the former Hewlett-Packard chief volunteered in a discussion about health insurance: "There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won't cover birth-control medication -- those women would like a choice." And then she repeated, "Those women would like a choice." Oh, the hilarity that ensued. Asked to respond, McCain delivered one of his more memorable reactions: An 8-second, silent, open-mouthed search of the heavens for an answer. He settled on, "I don't know enough about it to give you an informed answer." Carly Fiorina has become my favorite surrogate for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. Smoking Riskier for Women's Hearts
New research has revealed that though women are at lower risk than men of developing heart disease until a much later age, smoking can reverse this trend, leading female smokers to die of heart attacks on average nearly 14 years younger than women who don't smoke. This is in dramatic contrast to the six-year gap between male smokers and non-smokers. Government rule-change will eliminate contraceptives?!
The Bush administration has consistently opposed providing funding for international birth control programs, but until now has not tried to limit the use of contraceptives inside the United States.
That could change in the president's final months in office. Health and Human Services officials are considering a draft regulation that would classify most birth control pills, the Plan B emergency contraceptive and intrauterine devices as forms of abortion because they prevent the development of fertilized eggs into fetuses.
The rule, which does not require congressional approval, would allow health care workers who object to abortion on moral or religious grounds to refuse to counsel women on their birth control options or supply contraceptives. It would forbid more than half a million health agencies nationwide that receive federal funds from requiring employees to provide such services. Pharmacists could use the rule as a justification for refusing to fill birth control prescriptions, and insurance companies could cite it as a basis for declining to cover the costs.
An existing regulation allows health care providers with objections to abortion to abstain from providing it to patients. By extending the definition of abortion to cover contraceptives, federal officials are attempting to create by administrative fiat what would fail by a wide margin in Congress.
In fact, the draft rule could void laws in 27 states that require insurance companies to provide birth control coverage for women requesting it. The rule also could counter laws in 14 states requiring that rape victims receive counseling and access to emergency, day-after contraceptives. It would also require federal agencies and states to provide funds for sham family planning clinics that provide women only abstinence counseling.
The enactment of such rules would have an immediate impact in Southeast Texas, where state health officials estimate more than half a million women are in need of affordable family planning services. Rochelle Tafolla, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas Inc., warns that enactment of the regulation would endanger women's health.

Razor blades in your bikini bottoms: anti-FGM campaigners take it too far?
The Association of Women Against Genital Mutilation has unveiled an ad campaign that sees a razor blade-themed campaign slogan disguised as one of those little panty-liner shaped 'gusset protectors' (note to self: gusset is my new favourite word) in bikini bottoms on sale in shops.

"Every year 2 million girls worldwide are unable to avoid genital mutliation"
AWAGM seeks to make the issue unavoidable, by putting it right there in your face and, er, your crotch.
I imagine you'd get a bit of a surprise in the changing room when you went to try the bikini on. But are such powerful tactics legitimate?
And in reality, what can individuals do to stop FGM taking place? Is it the women buying bikinis that really have the power to bring an end to FGM? The Association of Women Against Genital Mutilation has unveiled an ad campaign that sees a razor blade-themed campaign slogan disguis... more -

Women's Life Expectancy in US goes down
Life expectancy for women in Deep South , Appalachia, lower Midwest and one county in Maine has dropped in the most significant change since the Spanish influenza of 1918. Rather than racial or ethnic factors, women affected is based on their living in rural and low-income areas. The numbers, according to the study, are driven by increases in deaths from diabetes, lung cancer, emphysema and kidney failure. These deaths reflect the longterm consequences of smoking and the growing obesity problem in the US. Yale senior 'induced abortions on herself' for art project
Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.
The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week
What do you think? Is this art? Or a cry for attention? Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she ar... more -
Babs to Cedars-Sinai: 'Here's $5 million for ya; it's like butta!...
Barbra Streisand has donated $5 million to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a women's heart education and research program, the hospital said on Wednesday.
The gift will create permanent funding for the Barbra Streisand Women's Cardiovascular Research and Education at Cedars-Sinai, and the hospital said it would expand research efforts there.
"Women need to be educated about female cardiovascular disease and the medical community must be propelled toward change," Streisand, 65, said in a written statement. Heart risk may start in the womb
Babies whose mothers develop pre-eclampsia in pregnancy may be at greater risk of cardiovascular disease in later life, a study suggests.
Pre-eclampsia, a relatively common pregnancy complication, or problems with the placenta can reduce the amount of oxygen the fetus receives.
This appears to retard growth and damage the baby's cardiovascular, metabolic and endocrine systems.
The findings are to be presented at a Society for Endocrinology meeting. Babies whose mothers develop pre-eclampsia in pregnancy may be at greater risk of cardiovascular disease in later life, a study sugges... more -
Fat Chance For Peace
This movie by Yael Luttwack came out last year and was featured in Tribeca but I just caught it last night during a BBC News show and was so impressed to know that there are people like her bridging the gap between Arabs and Jews in a peaceful, educational, and heart-warming way. This work, although idealistic in a broader sense, is tangible and effective in the grassroots and I wish there were more of this. Please google the movie "A Slim Peace."
"Body language says it all at the first meeting of a diet support group composed of highly educated Palestinians, secular and religious Jews, and Bedouins: the discomfort is tangible as women who would never even look at each other are forced to confront their fears of the other. Getting settlers to sit down with Ramallah residents was Luttwak's biggest challenge, but over the course of six sessions, the women not only lose weight but bridge their ingrained mistrust, highlighting just how geopolitics artificially narrows perspectives and sows seeds of hatred. Though the outcome one year later is less than hoped for, the applications are huge." (Variety, June 4, 2007)

The pill 'substantially' cuts ovarian cancer risk
"The contraceptive pill substantially reduces women's risk of ovarian cancer and continues to protect them for at least 30 years after they stop taking it, according to a big scientific analysis published today.
The research, by Oxford University epidemiologists, suggests that the risk of ovarian cancer is cut by 20% for every five years that a woman has been on the pill. Those who take it for 15 years cut their risk by half. Ovarian cancer is hard to detect and kills two-thirds of those who get it."

Britain Gets The Skinny Pill
As early as next year (which is in a few days, so that is VERY soon), the first over-the-counter slimming pill could go on sale in Britain's pharmacies. The drug, which has been marketed in the US under the name Alli since June, is a half-strength version of a pill called Xenical that is currently only available in Britain under prescription for treating obesity. So now we don't even have to try to stay slim. We just take a pill and continue sitting around on our butts. But make sure not to sit around eating crisps and biscuits, because too much fat in your diet while you're on the pill can lead to some explosive diarrhea. Awesome.
