    • UC Berkeley student found dead on his patio

Authorities are investigating the death of a UC Berkeley student whose body was found on the patio of his apartment building hours after he graduated with a degree in anthropology.

Alan Kaname Hamai, 22, of Redondo Beach apparently fell from the roof of the three-story building early Saturday. His body was found by another resident of the building, and he was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m., according to the Alameda County coroner's office. An autopsy was scheduled for today.

Hamai's parents attended his graduation ceremony Friday and were on their way back to Southern California on Saturday when they were notified of his death, according to the university.

Hamai is the second UC Berkeley student from Southern California to die outside a student hall this month.

Engineering student Christopher Wooten, 21, of Bellflower was stabbed in a sorority parking lot early May 3 after two groups of young men got into an argument.

    • DQ University - Once Again, Home of a Struggle

After a rich though troubled 35-year history, California's only tribal college - situated on 643 acres of federally entrusted land in Davis - struggles to survive.

(The "DQ" in the university's name stands for Deganawidah Quetzalcoatl - two iconic native leaders. Deganawidah, also known as "The Great Peacemaker," was one of the founders of the Iroquois confederacy. Quetzalcoatl was the legendary ruler of the Toltecs, a pre-Columbian people who dominated much of central Mexico between the 10th and 12th centuries. The name "DQ" is considered sacred, symbolizing the union of the Northern and Southern tribes, and is not uttered aloud except in ceremonies)

    • Psychedelic chemist explores one drug at a time

Alexander Shulgin is the world's foremost "psychonaut." The 82-year-old chemist has not only created more of the 300 known consciousness-altering (or psychoactive) compounds than anyone living or dead, he has, by his own account, sampled somewhere between 200 and 250 of them himself—most of them cooked up in the musty lab behind his home in the hills east of Berkeley, Calif., where he has shared many a chemical voyage with his wife of 26 years, Ann.

"I take them myself because I am interested in their activity in the human mind. How would you test that in a rat or mouse?" says Shulgin, known to friends as Sasha.

He has paid the price for his avocation. Some of his creations have induced uncontrollable vomiting, paralysis and the feeling that his bones were melting, among other terrors. His personal favorite, which he describes as "extraordinarily comfortable and quite erotic," is known simply as 2C-B for its chemical makeup.

Shulgin, who continues to study cacti for new chemical routes to altered states, predicts that by the year 2060, the number of different known psychedelics will have grown from 300 to 2,000. He intends to discover—and perhaps sample—as many of them as he can. "It is like opening a door to a hallway," he says, "that has unopened doors for its entire length, and behind every door is a world with which you are totally unfamiliar."

    • Built in Kabul

Built in Kabul is a 6-minute film about a side of Afghanistan you haven?t seen.

There is an unfamiliar sound in Kabul-it is the clink of metal hitting metal. It is hard not to notice the young men who are eagerly congregating in small rooms.

No, these men are not gathering to form new terrorism cells, but to pump iron?

Bodybuilding has become enormously popular among hundreds young men in this war torn country. There are over fifty new weight lifting gyms in Kabul alone, using old weights from the Soviet invasion in the 70?s.

There are ten-foot tall handmade billboards of Arnold Schwarzenegger?s muscular image overlooking the city as it struggles to rebuild its citizens and itself as a country.

Shoib Satar is one of these young bodybuilders who sees this sport as a way Afghans can better themselves.

As young men become ?strong? and ?independent? so does their country. Shoib has great hopes for the future of his people and his home in the new film by Brent E. Huffman entitled Built in Kabul.

    • Out on a Limb: Saving UC Oaks

The TaoLive press covers the protest of the cutting of the Oak grove trees outside the UC Berkeley stadium. Tree sitters have resided in the grove for the last 9 months. A fence was erected last week for the "protection" of the sitters. Police will issue citations or arrests for any sitter leaving the trees.

This coverage was taken on September 1, 2007: The day when 70,000 fans arrived for the game between Tennessee and UCB. Many fans were hostile to the tree sitters but declined to be interviewed.

    • UC Berkeley Superstar Rachel Barge Raises $2 Million for Sustainability

Rachel won the 2007 Brower Youth Award for her environmental achievements. Youth ages 13-22 can apply for the annual Award at www.broweryouthaward.org.

Rachel was an avid contributor to various environmental initiatives at the University of California, Berkeley beginning in her freshman year. She realized that one underlying factor preventing her campus from becoming more sustainable was a lack of funding for necessary projects. To overcome this challenge, Rachel co-created The Green Initiative Fund, a student fee referendum passed by the students at Berkeley.

The Green Initiative Fund successfully secures more than $2 million over ten years - $200,000 annually - for sustainability projects on campus, including clean energy, sustainable transportation, improved energy efficiency, water conservation, "green" internships, and improved recycling and composting programs. The Green Initiative Fund essentially tripled the amount of sustainability funding available at UC Berkeley and raised awareness about sustainability issues at the University.

Rachel also founded The Sustainability Team (Steam), a student internship program now consisting of 60 members dedicated to creating, implementing and leading a variety of projects aimed at establishing sustainable practices. The Sustainability Team implemented the first recycling program in student union buildings and founded the first organic, local, student-run cooperative produce stand on campus.

Scientists have speculated that the chemical culprit in red wine might be biogenic amines, like histamines. And although that hasn't been proved for certain yet, a group of UC Berkeley researchers working on that hunch have created a device that can detect the level of those amines appearing in a glass of wine. • Who Blew It Worse? Bears vs. BoSox II

So there was a pretty one sided answer to my post this morning that asked who blew it worse over the weekend the California Golden Bears loosing in the last seconds of the game or the collapse in Boston which tied the ALCS 1-1. Most people said that the Bears blew it harder than the Red Sox. Tonight the Indians won game three and have taken a 2-1 lead in the ALCS. So its time to update your response.
