What State has the Highest Car Thefts?
What are the three most important things when buying a home or setting up a business? Location, location, location. Turns out those are the three most important things to car thieves too.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), which has been tracking stolen vehicle rates by state since 1985, released its annual report identifying the most stolen cars in 2007 earlier this week. Ahead of that report's release, in the spring the group announced which American cities have the highest rates of car theft. Like everyone else, car thieves just love sunny California.
The NICB tracks metropolitan statistical areas for vehicle theft rates, determining them by the number of vehicle theft offenses per 100,000 habitants using the 2007 U.S. Census population estimates. Four of the top 10 cities for auto theft in 2007 are in California--and all four are in the top five, in fact.
Modesto, Calif., ranks at No. 1, with San Diego/Carlsbad/San Marcos in the third spot, Stockton in fourth and San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont in fifth place. The city in second place, the only one in the top five not in California, is Las Vegas/Paradise.
"One huge factor is that there are more vehicles in California than any other state, making it a target-rich environment to begin with," says Frank Scafidi, NICB spokesman. "The proximity to international borders and seaports is also a factor. Both are widely used in the illegal exportation of stolen vehicles."
But the main attractions are the car theft hot spots conveniently located near the Mexican border. A quick trip across and crooks can quickly unload stolen cars--or their parts--without hassle or question. That's why Texas, New Mexico and Arizona are "all high-theft states" as well, Scafidi notes.

Back-seat lovers survive 150ft cliff fall
When getting down and dirty in the back seat of yours, or your folks' car, remember don't park too close to the edge and don't forget to pull on the handbrake.
A couple in Taiwan unfortunately forgot both, and as a police officer who attended the scene explained: "the rocking motion started the car moving and it rolled off the hill. They were lucky they were not more seriously hurt."
They escaped with only broken bones and a few bruises, and a possible divorce pending for the woman involved. She reportedly told a homeowner who she had approached for help, that if her husband found out, he "would definitely sue for divorce".

62-year-old woman finally passed her driving test
A 62-year-old woman has finally passed her driving test - 27 years after her first lesson.
Teresa Clarke, of Wroxham, Norfolk, spent 15,000 pound in fees, had 450 hours of tuition from 20 instructors and failed 12 previous tests and cancelled a further 35 and had 50 mock exams.
She had her first lesson in 1981 shortly before American president Ronald Reagan was shot and Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer.

Temporary parks dominate parking spaces across the U.S.
PARK(ing) Day, a collaboration between San Francisco nonprofits Rebar and Public Architecture and the national Trust for Public Land is an event during which more than 40 cities across the country have seen countless groups take over parking spaces and turn them into an extremely wide variety of interpretations of the "public park."
PARK(ing) Day is a wonderful chance to spread the message that urban environments don't have to be a never-ending field of concrete and steel, and that even if you don't have a traditional garden, you shouldn't feel cut off from a life with green things.
On this third PARK(ing) Day--the first occurred in 2005 when Rebar set up a temporary park in a single San Francisco parking spot--the creative spirit is definitely in the air, and it's not just ordinary citizens who are getting involved.
In a way, PARK(ing) Day was a dress rehearsal for what Public Architecture hopes will be a series of permanent installations set up in urban streets.
Of course, even PARK(ing) Day had its rules. Those who had commandeered parking spaces had to pay the meters. At one point, at McLaughlin's sustainable rooftop garden, a couple of her colleagues noticed that a meter maid was coming.
"We'd better feed the meter," they said urgently.
But over at the temporary beauty salon, where there weren't any meters, but where the space was in a one-hour parking zone, Cara Buglil said the meter maid was simply driving by and honking happily at her and her fellow cosmetologists.

New Cars in California Must Display Global Warming Score
The labeling law forces cars for sale to display a global warming score, on a scale of one to 10, which is based on how vehicles in the same model year compare to one another. The higher the score, the cleaner a car is. The score takes into account emissions related to production of fuel for each vehicle as well as the direct emissions from vehicles. Prince Charles' car runs on wine
Who says the Royal Family is not progressive? Clarence House, Prince Charles' office, reports that the Royal's Aston Martin has successfully been converted and now runs on biofuel made from surplus wine. Prince Charles has also converted other cars, which are now running on biodiesel fuel made from used cooking oil. VW rolls out a sweet plug-in hybrid
Volkswagen's been toying with hybrids for awhile and got electric-vehicle advocates in a lather over the diesel-electric Golf it unveiled a few months ago. Now the company's promising a plug-in hybrid by 2010 and the German government's written a big check to make it happen.
"While the e-motor on a typical hybrid model just supplements the combustion engine, the exact opposite is true on Twin Drive," Winterkorn said during the car's unveiling in Berlin. "Here the diesel or gasoline engine supplements the e-motor."

Karma or Volt? Electric luxury supercars are here
Few years ago we pictured electric cars as feeble one seater experimental devises with bicycle wheels and a top speed of maybe 10 mph.
Not anymore, technology has gone far, really far! You do not believe me? Have a look at the two cars above.
The blue car is the Fisker Karma which is the world’s first sports luxury hybrid. It is the brain child of Henrik Fisker, the former Design Director for Aston Martin. This hybrid has a four-cylinder petrol engine in combination with lithium-ion batteries that drive an electric motor. Karma can do 60mph in 5.8 seconds and has a top speed of 125mph. It also comes with a solar panel on its roof to charge up the batteries. This car will come out of production a the end of 2009 and will have a price tag of $80,000.
Keep in touch!

Ten-year-old takes wheel when mom passes out
"The ten-year-old girl called 911 as she steered the car. A police officer running alongside helped stop it. All three spoke with Maggie Rodriguez on The Early Show.
A quick-thinking 10-year-old girl is being called a hero after taking control of the car her mother was driving when the woman had a seizure and passed out.
Cassandra Osborne was in the passenger seat when her mother, Gretchan Osborne, lost consciousness.
Frantic, Gretchan called 911, but had the presence of mind to grab the steering wheel to guide the car as she spoke to the operator. Cassandra couldn't get Grethan's leg off the accelerator.
A Galesburg, Ill. police officer who spotted the car, Timothy Jenkins, also reacted in a hurry, managing to run alongside and take control of the steering wheel, and helping Cassandra bring the vehicle to a stop.
On The Early Show Thursday, co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez spoke with all three. Also, parts of Cassandra's 911 call were played" "The ten-year-old girl called 911 as she steered the car. A police officer running alongside helped stop it. All three spoke with Magg... more -
