    • Arrest near Obama event sparks protest

A gun rights group is calling on Gov. Ed Rendell to "order a halt to unlawful police-state tactics at presidential campaign events" after a Beaver County man was arrested Friday for openly carrying a gun near where Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama later made an appearance.

The group, OpenCarry.org, accused state police of suspending the right to bear arms in Beaver by arresting John Noble, 50, of Industry. State police said Noble would be charged with disorderly conduct for carrying a loaded, holstered and exposed 9 mm semiautomatic because he breached a secured perimeter of a presidential candidate rally, creating alarm and causing a breakdown in security.

OpenCarry.org says Noble was not at the Obama event, did not attempt to enter the event area and broke no law.

A representative of Rendell's office could not be reached for comment Sunday.

    • Hundreds of mink set loose from Utah farm

Animal rights activists have released hundreds of mink from their pens at a Utah breeding farm, police in Utah have reported.

Lindsey McMullin said "animal rights terrorists" hit his South Jordan farm, 30 km south of Salt Lake City, on August 19 and released about 600 mink.

Most of the mink were recovered, but several died after being hit by cars or from stress after they were returned to the farm, McMullin said.

      Others were dehydrated and lethargic.

"I would like to have every one of those guys who attacked my farm go out with me to recover these animals and see the damage they've done," McMullin said.

The press office for the Animal Liberation Front posted a statement from "a local soldier out of Utah" saying 300 mink had been released and breeding records destroyed.

The loose-knit group opposes fur farms, claiming they treat the animals cruelly before they are killed for their pelts.

There was a rash of vandalism at mink farms in the late 1990s.

In one case, the Fur Breeder's Cooperative in the nearby town of
      Sandy was bombed.

In others, thousands of mink were released from private farms.

The McMullin farm specialises in raising black mink for use in cold weather clothing, according to Teresa Platt, director of Fur Commission USA, a trade group representing about 300 mink farms in 24 states.

More than 600,000 mink are raised each year at 66 mink farms in
      Utah, she said.

    • Stone arch collapses in Utah park

One of the largest and most photographed stone arches in Arches National Park has collapsed.

Wall Arch fell sometime early last week, though no one has reported seeing it collapse, said Paul Henderson, the park's chief of interpretation.

He said the arch, located along the popular Devils Garden Trail, was claimed by forces that will eventually destroy other arches in the park: gravity and erosion.

Measuring more than 33 feet tall and 71 feet across, Wall Arch ranked 12th in size among the park's estimated 2,000 arches. It was first reported and named in 1948.

Rock fall from the remaining arms of the arch has forced the closure of a portion of the trail. Henderson said it would reopen when it was deemed safe and debris had been cleared.

    • Farmer sends message to neighbors with car fence

HOOPER, Utah (AP) -- A farmer has erected a backyard fence made of three old cars sticking up in the air to send a message to new neighbors that he can do whatever he wants on his property.

"This is just a fun way for me to say, `Hey boys, I'm still here,'" Rhett Davis said. "This is my redneck Stonehenge."

Davis came up with the idea after neighbors who recently moved into homes next to his hayfield complained about his farm.

"The people who bought the homes say, `Well, we love looking into your yard and seeing the horses and the cattle, but we don't like the flies, and we don't like the mosquitoes,' and when I cut my field to bale it, they say, `We don't like the dust in the air,' " Davis said.

Neighbors declined to comment to the Standard-Examiner of Ogden.

Davis said he offered to pay for half the cost of a fence between his property and the others and to build it. He said his neighbors declined the offer, saying it would block their view.

Davis said he used a backhoe to dig three large holes on the edge of his property, then took three cars that had competed in demolition derbies and planted them nose-first into the ground.

He said the cars were planted out of humor rather than spite. He stressed that it's important for new residents to realize that Hooper is a farming community.

"I respect that they're here and spent a lot on their homes, but on the other hand, give me a little bit, too," Davis said. "I've been here since I was 7 years old."

He said he doesn't intend to keep the cars up permanently.

"These can come out just as easy as they went in," Davis said.

    • Colorado, Wyoming battle Bush over oil shale

Administration's proposed rules renew environmental, technology debate

The Bush administration's push Tuesday to speed up development of oil shale in the Rocky Mountains runs headlong into Colorado and Wyoming leaders, who say the environmental costs are too high and the technology unproven.

The Interior Department unveiled proposed regulations Tuesday for a program to sell oil shale leases on federal lands, similar to the leases sold now for oil and natural gas both on and offshore.

The move comes after Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., last year inserted language into a spending bill that bars the federal government from issuing final rules for commercial oil-shale development.

Today's "announcement does not change the realities," said Matt Lee-Ashley, a spokesman for Salazar. "While the administration can finalize its draft rules, it is premature to move forward with a full commercial leasing program."

Bureau of Land Management spokesman Matt Spangler said Tuesday's proposal does not conflict with Salazar's provision.

President Bush, in an energy speech last month, called for lifting restrictions on oil shale leasing in the Green River Basin of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

"For many years, the high cost of extracting oil from shale exceeded the benefit. But today the calculus is changing," Bush said.

"Companies have invested in technology to make oil shale production more affordable and efficient. And while the cost of extracting oil from shale is still more than the cost of traditional production, it is also less than the current market price of oil. This makes oil shale a highly promising resource," he said.

Salazar responded by saying that "the reality about oil shale (is that) it's hydrocarbons locked up in rock and it is very difficult to extract."

    • Romney's campaign revealed America's prejudice against LDS -Salt Lake Tr...

I think campaigns in general reveal prejudice. I think the surprising thing to many Mormons is that Romney's campaign revealed that even the conservative right seemed to reject Romney's religion. Utah Mormons have always supported the most conservative nominee in the race, regardless of the candidate's religion. The fact that they did not get the same kind of love when a candidate of their faith ran for the presidency really hurt them. It will be interesting to see what kind of support McCain ends up getting in Utah. My guess is that if he were to win the Presidency he would be a lot less popular than President Bush, simply because of the Romney fallout.

    • Better duck - If you're a Mormon

"If you denigrate a racial group, you're racist.

If you denigrate women, you're sexist.

If you denigrate Mormons, you're hip.

No one would openly suggest that you shouldn't vote for Hillary Clinton because a woman can't lead the country, especially an ornery one.

Nobody would dare say that you shouldn't vote for Barack Hussein Obama because he's black, or of Muslim descent, or because he has a name that sounds like a terrorist. One Clinton worker even apologized for alluding to Obama's use of drugs as a youth, so apparently it's wrong to disparage former drug users, too.

But nobody is shy about saying you shouldn't vote for Romney simply because he's a Mormon."

The above is an excerpt from Deseret News columnist Doug Robinson's latest column. I believe he is speaking for the millions of Mormons who feel the same way at this point. Enough with slandering Mitt Romney's religion.
