Steve Jobs: it's time we design our own iPhone and iPod chips
pple chief executive Steve Jobs revealed that his company will start designing its own breed of chips to power the next-generation of Multi-Touch devices that won't be available to rivals.
Apple appears to have other plans to further innovation around its Multi-Touch platform that will reduce its reliance on chip designs conceived largely by third parties. Apple's recent $278 million acquisition of a small fabless semiconductor company called P.A. Semi was an investment in the future of its handheld products.
For Apple, the advantages of bringing PA Semi in-house are many. In particular, it will afford the company to innovate in a way going forward that will differentiate its handheld products from a growing array of competitive devices that will be left to rely on technologies available to the broader industry. It will also allow the company, which is synonymous with secrecy, to keep a tighter lid on its intellectual property and future product plans. pple chief executive Steve Jobs revealed that his company will start designing its own breed of chips to power the next-generation of ... more -

Mac versus PC: the experts declare a winner
Popular Mechanics says there is a clear victor when comparing the common PC against the Mac.
For their test, the magazine matched a Gateway One PC against an iMac.
They logged boot-up and shutdown times; the time it took for each computer to rip a CD; made each computer play Saving Private Ryan; and in a grueling test made each computer play three video sources, DivX encoding, instant messaging, Word, Adobe Acrobat and a spyware scan simultaneously.

Hackers Targeting the Mac OS X
Had to happen sooner or later. One of the reasons that the Windows operating system is a favorite target is its omnipresence around the world (along with users not updating their systems). Basically, more bang for the buck when it came to time invested. But as Mac increases its share of the market, they become more of a target. Add that to the fact that most Mac users think they are impervious to hackers and you have a challenge that a hacker almost has to accept. Had to happen sooner or later. One of the reasons that the Windows operating system is a favorite target is its omnipresence around th... more

Music software Ableton 7 hits the big time
Users of the popular sequencing software Ableton Live will notice some big changes in it's latest version Live 7. Like big hitters Cubase and Logic, Live 7 has been designed to utilise 64 bit processing technology (That's top end professional computers like a Mac Pro) as well as being able to run on consumer desktop and laptops. Whilst still being the number one application for live artists and DJ's it is now breaking on the top end level of production.
New features include a greater level of virtual instruments like drum kits, analog synthesisers and piano's. It also can now boast a vast sample library as well as reaching a higher level of audio fidelity.
Ableton is a fantastically intuitive tool for making music however we will see whether fans of its lo-fi geeky image will fall for its newer snazzier version. I personally can't wait to get a copy but will probably need to upgrade my computer first...
