Billboard's Hot 100 Seals Its 1,000th Hit with Katy Perry's "I Kiss...
Katy Perry just smooched her way to No. 1, and into the history books.
Her single "I Kissed a Girl" leapfrogged over Coldplay to top Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart, becoming the 1,000th No. 1 hit of the rock era.
Perry landed the millennial No. 1 by selling 235,000 digital copies and surging seven spots to No. 12 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. Though her music leans pop, the racy singer is racking up spins at several alt-rock stations as well, and she's a fixture on this year's Vans Warped Tour. The Future of Music: Music and social networking
The National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) held a convention yesterday (May 6th) with discussions taking place by a number of panelists including artist managers and the heads of many social networking websites. The panelists discussed how social networking and music correlate in today's world and where this correlation will lead in the future. San Francisco based writer for Billboard - Courtney Harding - recalls some of the more notable points of the panels. She states, "J. Scavo, head of MySpace Records, pointed out that, 'it would have been difficult for MySpace to survive without music.' [...] Imeem's Steve Jang told the audience that artist-to-user playlists were one of his site's most popular features." Harding also claims that, "Jang also offered a counter-argument to Billy Bragg's point from a New York Times editorial that social networks sold for a large sum should share their windfall with affiliated artists. Jang told the crowd to look at it the other way and consider whether a band that gets big on MySpace should be forced to pay royalties to the site."
