SPOTLIGHT: Telco PACs Gave $8K to Dems Who Changed Their Vote on FISA Bill | MAPLi...
a nice analysis by Maplight.org indicating that those Democratic representatives who changed their vote on telecom immunity between March and June received on average 40% more in contributions from telecom interests than those Democrats who held firm. Maplight asks, "Why did these ninety-four House members have a change of heart? Their constituents deserve answers." Across both parties, representatives who voted for immunity in June had received almost twice a much telecom money as those who voted against. Wired's coverage includes a quote from Larry Lessig, who is on the Maplight board: "Money corrupts the process of reasoning. [Lawmakers] get a sixth sense of how what they do might affect how they raise money."

Sprint unveils iPhone killer Samsung Instinct
Sprint Nextel Corp. has announced its iPhone killer, the Samsung Instinct. The device features a touch-screen, and looks similar to the design of the popular Apple phone. The Samsung Instinct will be offered on the Sprint network and will feature a virtual keyboard which will appear in a very similar manner to how the iPhone keyboard works. There will also be a built-in Web browser as well as the ability to play music and video on the device.
Sprint stated that the Instinct will release this coming June. The wireless company has stated that the service plans for the Instinct will be similar to how AT&T sets up their Apple iPhone plans. Those who want to buy the Instinct will have to sign up for at least a $69/month plan. This will include unlimited texting as well as Internet access. The plans AT&T and Apple offer for the iPhone all include unlimited data, or Internet access as well.
The Instinct will ship with a replacement battery as well as a 2GB memory card. There is no word yet on the exact pricing of the Instinct, but it is believed to be under $300.

Okay, so being able to buy books, newspapers and magazines anywhere wirelessly is pretty f'in cool. Using Sprint's cell-phone network for internet access and not having to pay for it. And the prices are really low. My only concern is selection, but it's still pretty impressive right now and should improve over time.
It also sorta stinks that you have to pay $.10 to email documents to your device instead of letting you transfer them over USB cable, is that a piracy prevention mechanism? Doesn't make sense since you have to transfer audiobooks over the USB cable already.
Still, pretty impressive looking device. I've been hoping an eink reader would come along with a reason for me to buy it. Okay, so being able to buy books, newspapers and magazines anywhere wirelessly is pretty f'in cool. Using Sprint's cell-phone network ... more
